∗ STAR-STUDDED LINE UP FOR THE BRITISH ACADEMY TELEVISION CRAFT AWARDS Press information for immediate release: Wednesday 29 April 2008. The British Academy is delighted to announce that Claudia Winkleman will host this year’s BAFTA TELEVISION CRAFT AWARDS which take place on Sunday 11 May 2008 at The Dorchester in London. This is the first time that Claudia will have hosted one of BAFTA’s glittering Awards ceremonies and she will be joined on the night by an all-star line up, turning out to support all the nominees at the ceremony that celebrates the talent behind the scenes of the television industry. Presenters on the night include: Catherine Tate, Imelda Staunton, Jason Isaacs, the latest BAFTA-winner James Corden, Tallulah Riley (St.Trinians ), Phil Davis, Katie Lyons (Green Wing, Boy A ), James Purefoy, Sally Hawkins (Happy-Go-Lucky ), Greg Wise, Rakie Ayola (Holby City ), Michael Wood (Presenter and historian) , Gerard Kearns (Shameless,The Mark Of Cain ), Joan Bakewell and Alan Parker. CENTRE STAGE THE PIPELINE OF BAME TALENT AndrewAndrew Lloyd Lloyd Webber Webber FoundationFoundation INTRODUCTION— hen I produced Bombay Dreams over a decade ago and was privileged Wto introduce the marvellous music of A R Rahman to a West End audience, one of our greatest difficulties was finding enough Asian actors. BAME diversity in the performing arts has once again been high on the agenda this year, from the runaway success of Hamilton on Broadway to the latest announcement from Arts Council England of £4.6 million to boost diversity. Very often the discussion is focussed on increasing the representation of diverse ethnicities on stage and this is crucially important. However, I’ve been acutely aware that one of the biggest issues is the lack of trained diverse talent coming through. Casting directors and theatre producers alike often complain that they’d like to cast more Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic performers but that they don’t get enough turning up to audition. Inspired by some of the success stories coming out of the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation’s scholarship programme – such as Emmanuel Kojo who is interviewed in these pages – the Foundation decided to commission this " I PASSIONATELY research. The aim was to come up with some positive recommendations that BELIEVE THAT can be adopted by people involved at every stage of the talent pipeline from THE STAGE NEEDS school to stage. TO REFLECT THE DIVERSITY OF THE UK I passionately believe that the stage needs to reflect the diversity of the POPULATION OR IT UK population or it risks becoming side-lined.

Tony Hancock: BBC Publicity Shot for Hancock’s Half Hour, November 1956 The Tony Hancock Appreciation Society (THAS) Since its creation in 1976, the THAS has dedicated itself to preserving and promoting the works of Tony Hancock and, more crucially, to finding his broadcasts that were missing from the archives. Over the decades, these efforts have yielded a wealth of material, most notably lost episodes of his most beloved work on Hancock’s Half Hour for both television and radio. Many of these have now been located and returned to the BBC; some feature in this special series of Collectibles, now into 1 its third volume. However, many still remain lost at this time. In addition, our efforts have found other material – shows recorded before Hancock became a household name – from series such as Calling All Forces, Variety Bandbox and Star Bill. Again, examples of these can be found in this series. In the previous volumes, there was an extensive analysis of missing recordings from Hancock’s radio career, and, as ever, we remain hopeful that some of these recordings will emerge from private collections or, perhaps, the archives of the BBC or other institutions. In these notes, we will focus on a number of missing recordings and shows outside the ‘core’ work Hancock did on his eponymous series and those that preceded it.

Centre for Cultural Policy Research Department of Theatre, Film and Television University of Glasgow Glasgow G12 8QQ December 2008 © Caitriona Noonan, 2008 Abstract This thesis examines the way in which media professionals negotiate the occupational challenges related to television and radio production. It has used the subject of religion and its treatment within the BBC as a microcosm to unpack some of the dilemmas of contemporary broadcasting. In recent years religious programmes have evolved in both form and content leading to what some observers claim is a “renaissance” in religious broadcasting. However, any claims of a renaissance have to be balanced against the complex institutional and commercial constraints that challenge its long-term viability. This research finds that despite the BBC’s public commitment to covering a religious brief, producers in this style of programming are subject to many of the same competitive forces as those in other areas of production. Furthermore those producers who work in-house within the BBC’s Department of Religion and Ethics believe that in practice they are being increasingly undermined through the internal culture of the Corporation and the strategic decisions it has adopted. This is not an intentional snub by the BBC but a product of the pressure the Corporation finds itself under in an increasingly competitive broadcasting ecology, hence the removal of the protection once afforded to both the department and the output.

DRAMA WINTER HIGHLIGHTS 2004 ENGLAND EXPECTS Steven Mackintosh stars in a hard-hitting drama about a man who is drawn back to his far right past as his life spirals out of control. Mackintosh plays Ray, a responsible family man, fiercely protective of his daughter, Nikki. But he is also a control freak and, when things start to go wrong – first at work and then at home – he begins to lose his grip on reality. As his behaviour becomes increasingly erratic and he looks for someone other than himself to blame, he turns towards people from his past – people who are prepared to exploit him for their own ends. England Expects is produced by award-winning programme-maker Ruth Caleb. Her BBC ONE credits include Dominic Savage's Out Of Control, which won the Michael Powell Award for Best British Film at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, and Antonia Bird's Care, which won the Prix Italia for Best Drama. IN DENIAL OF MURDER Stephen Tompkinson plays campaigning local journalist Don Hale in a factually based drama which explores the controversial case of Stephen Downing and the murder in 1973 of Wendy Sewell (played by Caroline Catz) in Bakewell cemetery in the Peak District. Don Hale’s determination to prove Downing’s innocence captured the imagination of the press and public alike. Based on extensive research and written by Neil McKay, In Denial Of Murder tells the moving and tragic story behind the headlines, combining the story of Hale’s campaign with an account of the life of the murder victim.

Mothers on Mothers: Maternal Readings of Popular Television
From Supernanny to Gilmore Girls, from Katie Price to Holly Willoughby, a MOTHERS ON wide range of examples of mothers and motherhood appear on television today. Drawing on questionnaires completed by mothers across the UK, this MOTHERS ON MOTHERS book sheds new light on the varied and diverse ways in which expectant, new MATERNAL READINGS OF POPULAR TELEVISION and existing mothers make sense of popular representations of motherhood on television. The volume examines the ways in which these women find pleasure, empowerment, escapist fantasy, displeasure and frustration in popular depictions of motherhood.
