School Council Newsletter March 13, 2015 WHAT'S NEW... March Break is here! There is something so appealing about March Break! It marks the end of a long winter and start of spring. It is an important break in the cycle of school, lesson planning, homework, lunch making, meetings and all those things that are important part of our regular pattern of life. Many people use March Break as family time - whether you travel or plan a "staycation", I hope you enjoy the week away from the regular routine and come back recharged. Relaxation is "Celestial" Here is a great story about student success! Sir Robert Borden student Abdou Sarr has developed a relaxation app to help fellow students relax and sleep better. Sarr recorded the sounds and developed the app called "Celestial". He first submitted it to the App Store on February 23 and it went on sale Sunday - it is currently at number 38. Listen here and click on Ottawa Teen's Relaxation App Understanding the Teenage Brain - Hillcrest High School - March 24th - 6:30 - 9:00 p.m. Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) in partnership with Hillcrest High School Council and the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board, will be presenting a free public session for parents, caregivers, service providers and educators at Hillcrest High School on Tuesday March 24th from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. CHEO psychologists will present a variety of relevant topics ranging from concussions, to anxiety, to understanding the development of the teenage brain. -

2015 Summary Report Britannia Water Purification Plant & Distribution System 1.0 General overview The City of Ottawa provides treatment, storage, and distribution of high quality drinking water to approximately 874,000 residents and industrial water users. The central water supply includes the Britannia and Lemieux Island Water Purification Plants which utilize the Ottawa River for their source water. Treated drinking water from both plants is distributed through a large network of water mains, pumping stations, reservoirs, and elevated tanks including a direct water supply to Russell Township. Outside of the central supply, the City operates (5) well systems that provide drinking water to rural communities located in Carp, Richmond (Kings Park subdivision), Munster, Greely (Shadow Ridge subdivision), and Vars. This report deals specifically with the production and distribution of drinking water from the Britannia Water Purification Plant (WPP). The report must review regulatory requirements, standards and drinking water license requirements as a means of demonstrating compliance with drinking water regulations and the provision of safe drinking water during 2015. The report has been prepared in fulfillment of Schedule 22 of O.Reg.170/03, which requires that a Summary Report be prepared for each water supply system and given to the members of municipal council by March 31 of the following year. pg-1-of-15 Barrhaven United Church Summary Joint Needs Assessment Report Barrhaven United Church (BUC) 3013 Jockvale Road, Ottawa, Ontario K2J 4E4 613- 825-1707 www.barrhavenunited.org pg-2-of-15 Executive Summary and Recommendations In response to the retirement of its ministry personnel, Barrhaven United Church (BUC) entered into a process of assessing its ministry, resources, goals and needs. The Joint Needs Assessment Committee (JNAC) gathered data from previous assessments and exploratory discernment, consulted widely with the congregation and staff, and worked with Presbytery on completion of the Needs Assessment process. It was determined that one minister with the assistance of paid accountable Lay people and volunteers be engaged to lead the ministry of the congregation. To this end, the Joint Needs Assessment Committee recommends that the Barrhaven Pastoral Charge request the Ottawa Presbytery to declare a Vacancy and authorize a Joint Search Committee to find one new full-time minister (either Ordained or Diaconal) to lead worship, preside over sacraments, care for the pastorate and reach out to the community. The ideal candidate will be energetic and enthusiastic with multi-disciplinary expertise in Worship, Pastoral Care, Outreach and Christian Education. The candidate will be a preacher who is experienced in crafting dynamic worship services and is comfortable interacting and engaging with all age groups especially youth and young families. In addition, The Joint Needs Assessment Committee recommends that the Barrhaven United Church Council move to establish job descriptions and classifications for Lay staff to be engaged as support to the new minister in the ministries of Adult Christian Education programming, Youth Group, and Sunday School. -

Document 2 Bells Corners Community Improvement Plan 1. Background Bells Corners has been identified as needing economic development activity, particularly, measures are needed to incent urban revitalization. Over the last several decades, the quality and vibrancy of the Robertson Road corridor, between the CN Railway bridge on the east and the City-owned railway bridge (now a multi-purpose pathway) on the west, has declined significantly, resulting in a lack of business investment; declining levels of property maintenance; and the closure, downsizing, and/or relocation of many existing businesses. Some 468 business have closed or moved away from Bells Corners in this period, and well-known brands like Staples, IKEA, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Wendy's, 2nd Cup, Alexanian Carpet, Burger King, Arby's, Baskin-Robbins, and Pizza Hut are all long gone. Hurley’s, a former thriving restaurant, was replaced by Local Heroes, but now it too has downsized and moved across the street, leaving a large vacant building. The restaurant that initially opened as Corkscrew Restaurant at 3795 Richmond Road (now 1961 Robertson Road) has housed a long list of businesses since Corkscrew’s failure, including Buffet Palace, Vox Lounge, Houston's Restaurant, and Miss Saigon, but now all have failed, and the building has been torn down and the land sits vacant. The purpose of this Community Improvement Plan (CIP) is to encourage and facilitate rehabilitation, redevelopment, and revitalization of the existing built environment while providing enhanced employment opportunities, all of which are important for the health and liveability of this section of Bells Corners. The CIP benefits private landowners undertaking redevelopment projects on private property; however, the eligibility and reporting criteria require that the tenants creating the jobs are made aware of the CIP incentives so they can negotiate appropriate lease terms with complete information. -

The draft budget includes funding for core community priorities such as transit, social infrastructure, safety, the environment, support for the arts and efforts to promote economic growth. Substantial investments in active transportation and improved transit services are key priorities of this draft budget, securing funding for consistent service delivery and programs that support our most vulnerable residents. Multi-ward (regional) investments The 2017 draft budget includes $645 million in tax-and-rate-supported capital projects, comprised of $290.9 million for ward-specific and cross-ward projects.
