Of Body Snatchers and Cyberpunks Since its beginnings, science fiction has served as an intellectual playground where pressing issues such as scientific and technological progress, population growth, nuclear power, environmental protection, or genetic engineering have been projected onto different times and spaces in order to warn about inherent dangers, offer solutions, or to simply speculate Sonja Georgi and Kathleen Loock (eds.) about and experiment with the future. In the summer term of 2009, students from the University of Göttingen and the University of Siegen participated in two parallel courses entitled “Of Body Snatchers and Cyberpunks: American Science Fiction Film from the 1950s to the Present” and met for an undergraduate conference in Göttingen where they presented and discussed their research on American science fiction film together with Eric S. Rabkin, professor at the University of Of Body Snatchers and Cyberpunks Michigan (USA) and an international expert in the field. The result of this project is the present volume of twelve student essays that were first presented at the conference, and then selected and revised for publication. Considering science fiction film as an essential element of American popular culture, the essays analyze and discuss the films Invasion of Student Essays on American Science Fiction Film the Body Snatchers (Siegel, 1956), 2001: A Space Odyssey (Kubrick, 1968), Soylent Green (Fleischer, 1973), The Matrix (Wachowski, 1999), and Minority Report (Spielberg, 2002) against the background of social, political, cultural, and/or ecological developments in their contemporary U.S. societies. The introductory essay outlines the theoretical, methodological, and didactic considerations that informed the planning and teaching processes of the course format Göttinger Schriften zur Englischen Philologie and the conference. The collection also features an autobiographical essay by Eric S. Rabkin in which he reflects on his personal experiences and lifelong fascination with science fiction films. Introduction Sonja Georgi / Kathleen Loock Of Body Snatchers and Cyberpunks: Teaching American Science Fiction Film I In 2006, the German Association for American Studies (DGfA) held its annual conference at the University of Göttingen. The conference topic, “American Stud- ies as Media Studies,” paid tribute to the different turns that have (re)shaped the field of literary and cultural studies after the linguistic, historical, and cultural turns of the 1970s and 1980s.1 Throughout the past two decades, new theoretical and methodological approaches have emerged that take into account different con- temporary and historical mediations of (trans)national or cultural representations and have led to an expansion of American Studies as a discipline. In accordance with the overall topic, the conference program challenged the traditional hegem- ony of the printed word by including papers that focused on visual, audio-visual, and audio formats as

The imperatives of liberalism and neoliberalism constitute the modern body as a white, male, heteronormative body, navigating appropriate relationships to production and consumption. How does the human body emerge as a bounded entity in science and science fiction from the nineteenth century onward? Alien invasion narratives offer a fruitful way to trace this concept and its development over time. These narratives model proper ways of attending to one’s body as well as proper ways of defending oneself—and, by extension, the planet—from alien invasion. The present inquiry focuses on three different alien invasion narratives, beginning with H. G. Wells’s influential The War of the Worlds (1897), before moving to consider a pair of twentieth- century American texts: Philip Kaufman’s film Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) and Octavia Butler’s novel Fledgling (2005).

Victor Frankenstein Frankenstein: The Modern Prometheus (1818) Course Description and Objectives Communication 323, Science Fiction Cinema, will primarily focus on the examination of the North American science fiction film genre. The readings, lectures, and screenings are organized historically to facilitate an understanding of the evolution of science fiction cinema within a cultural context. The course is also designed to expand the student's understanding of the critical/cultural theoretical approaches most commonly employed in the analysis of science fiction texts. The format for each class will consist of lecture, screening, and discussion. Assigned readings and screenings must be completed on time to facilitate the class discussions. Students are expected to watch at least one assigned film outside of class each week.     Reality Unbound Introduction Introduction Reality Unbound: New Departures in Science Fiction Cinema cience fiction, Jean Baudrillard wrote, “is no longer anywhere, and it is ev- Serywhere.”1 In formulating his conceptualization of simulacra, Baudrillard was struck by the inherent instability of referents, and by proxy the difficulties associated with discerning what is real in the modern world. As we move deeper into the new millennium, Baudrillard’s slippery formulation seems to solidify somehow, as near constant war, financial crises and rising political extremism cloud our assumptions about the contemporary world we have molded. In an age where the language employed by the media, as well as the events it describes, becomes ever more apocalyptic in tone, one might reasonably ponder the rami- fications for sf, which has long held a looking glass up to society, revealing our foibles and reveling in our hunger for advancement and our competing appe- tite for destruction. The 21st century was not supposed to be like this, and yet though still in its infancy, who knows how it will turn out? If we accept that sf provides a shadowy reflection of the times that spawned it, then it is tempting to ask how we and by extension our times will look to future historians? Whilst our worldview has become increasingly unsettled—and a cursory glance at recent sf releases can give the impression that dystopia is the new normal—it would be foolhardy to divorce ourselves from historicity or fall prey to what the British sociologist John Urry described as “an epochal hubris that presumes that one’s own moment is somehow a special moment in transition.”2 Sf cinema has long been cognizant of such considerations of course, and in the midst of chaos it endures.
