    UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Homer’s Roads Not Taken Stories and Storytelling in the Iliad and Odyssey A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Classics by Craig Morrison Russell 2013 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Homer’s Roads Not Taken Stories and Storytelling in the Iliad and Odyssey by Craig Morrison Russell Doctor of Philosophy in Classics University of California, Los Angeles, 2013 Professor Alex C. Purves, Chair This dissertation is a consideration of how narratives in the Iliad and Odyssey find their shapes. Applying insights from scholars working in the fields of narratology and oral poetics, I consider moments in Homeric epic when characters make stories out of their lives and tell them to each other. My focus is on the concept of “creativity” — the extent to which the poet and his characters create and alter the reality in which they live by controlling the shape of the reality they mould in their storytelling. The first two chapters each examine storytelling by internal characters. In the first chapter I read Achilles’ and Agamemnon’s quarrel as a set of competing attempts to create the authoritative narrative of the situation the Achaeans find themselves in, and Achilles’ retelling of the quarrel to Thetis as part of the move towards the acceptance of his version over that of Agamemnon or even the Homeric Narrator that occurs over the course of the epic. In the second chapter I consider the constant storytelling that [ii ] occurs at the end of the Odyssey as a competition between the families of Odysseus and the suitors to control the narrative that will be created out of Odysseus’s homecoming.

However, one senses a certain desperation in the poet's effort to con­ nect what the laurel has come to signify over time with its immediate physical properties. Since the primary impulse behind the Metamorphoses is etiological, Ovid can't account for the acknowledged nexus between laurel and conquest in morphological terms. He gets round the problem, however, with a set of godly fiats. Deity, after all, is never accountable to anything but itself: But even now in this new form Apollo loved her; placing his hand upon the trunk, he felt the heart fluttering beneath the bark. He errtbraced the branches as if human limbs, and pressed his lips upon the wood.

When, in 1867, Munro gave to the world for the first time a complete collation of the one unimpeachable source for constituting the text, the tenth-century Cambridge MS. Kk v. 34, he was really laying the basis of a more exact criticism ; for though the value of C was well known, and its readings had been used by Moriz Haupt in his various papers and dissertations on Aetna, no complete con- spectus of the MS. was before the public till the great Cambridge scholar exhibited it in its entirety. Little was done for the further illustration of the poem till 18S0 when Bahrcns edited the poem as part of the Appendix Vergiliana in the second volume of his Poetae Latini Minores.

"A Lock Upon All Conduct:" Modesty in German Courtly Literature (c. 1175-1220) Abstract This dissertation examines notions of modesty in behavior and appearance as represented in romance and conduct literature of the German Middle Ages. I look to the Winsbecke poems and Thomasin von Zirclaria's Der Welsche Gast as representative samples of conduct literature, considering them alongside the four core courtly romances: Hartman von Aue's Iwein and Erec, Gottfried von Strassburg's Tristan, and Wolfram von Eschenbach's Parzival. The project is guided by four central areas of inquiry. First, I investigate the "cleavage" between the two genres of romance and conduct literature, exploring the ways in which they cling to each other as reference points and split off from the other's constructs. Second, I pay close attention to gender differences in the practice of modesty, investigating precisely what they are and how they structure gender roles and courtly identity.

    Populäre Geschichtsschreibung Im 19

    Populäre Geschichtsschreibung im 19. Jahrhundert. Gustav Freytag und seine „Bilder aus der deutschen Vergangenheit“ von Martin Nissen I. Im Feld der Wissenschaftsgeschichte kann die Historiographiegeschichte auf eine lange Tradition seit dem ausgehenden 18. Jahrhundert zurück blicken. Im internationalen Vergleich hat sich dabei gerade die deutsche Historiographiegeschichte neben der Entwicklung der eigenen disziplinären Traditionen früh mit der Herausbildung der Geschichte als Wissenschaft beschäftigt. Der Schwerpunkt wurde dabei auf verschiedene fachinterne Strömungen und Konfliktlinien gelegt und darüber ein zunehmend normativer Wissenschaftsbegriff ausgebildet. Geschichte wurde demzufolge im 19. Jahrhundert zu einem Fach und einer Wissenschaft, die sich im Verlauf des Jahrhunderts spezialisierte und weiter ausdifferenzierte. Die Prägekraft gerade der herrschenden historistischen Richtung wurde dabei so stark, dass dadurch auch Verwissenschaftlichungsprozesse in anderen Disziplinen angestoßen und nachhaltig geprägt werden konnten. Die Historiographie- geschichte orientierte sich dabei zunächst an der Entwicklung des wissenschaftlichen Denkens in seinen unterschiedlichen Formen. Ein letztlich trotz seiner Vielfalt entitätischer Wissenschaftsbegriff konnte so stabilisiert werden. Störendes wie der fiktionale oder unterhaltend-populäre Charakter der Geschichtsschreibung blieb gerade in der deutschen Historiographiegeschichte hingegen lange unberücksichtigt.
