In Kenntnis der Unterscheidung von Volkspoesie und Kunst- poesie gewinnt die scheinbar widersprüchliche Formulierung, Moriz Haupt sei Vordenker der Komparatistik und Verneiner jeglicher Vergleich- barkeit in Einem, ihren Sinn. In Philologie und poetischer Praxis des 19. Jahrhunderts bildeten ‚Volk‘ und ‚Individuum‘ zwei zentrale Pole zum Verständnis des Poesiebegriffs, wobei dem Volk die ‚Volkspoesie‘, dem Individuum die ‚Kunst- poesie‘ entsprach. Wenn Haupt z. B. einerseits dem Analogieprozess des Übersetzens hohen Wert beimaß, andererseits ihn aber als hinderlich für das Verständnis eines Autors ansah, so ent- sprang die zwiespältige Denkweise aus der Op- position von Volks- und Kunstpoesie. Das Wirken Moriz Haupts zeigt ein struk- Abb. 1 turelles Dilemma, in das die von der Romantik inspirierte Erforschung der Poesie ab dem ersten Drittel des 19. Jahrhunderts geriet. Der universale Anspruch, den August Wilhelm Schlegel (1767–1845) als akademi- scher Lehrer noch bewahrt hatte, wurde nicht allein von der allgemeinen Tendenz zur Nationalisierung der ‚Poesie‘ bedroht: Dem Gedanken der nationalen Abgren- zung einzelner Völker und ihrer ‚Naturpoesie‘ folgte die Möglichkeit ihrer Wieder- vereinigung auf dem Fuß, und es war nur folgerichtig gewesen, wenn die Idee einer Weltliteratur und die Idee der Nationalliteraturen aus derselben Problemlage hervor- gegangen waren. Die Universalität des poetischen Geistes geriet aus einem anderen Grund aus dem Blick: Indem die romantischen Philologen und ihre unmittelbaren Nachfolger in den einheitlichen Poesiebegriff eine Differenz einführten, von welcher sie die gegenläufigen Erkenntnisziele ‚Geist des Volkes‘ und ‚Geist des Autors‘ ablei- teten, verloren sie an der übergeordneten Einheit und deren Telos, dem ‚Geist der Poesie‘, das Interesse. Das synthetisierende Paradigma ‚Naturpoesie‘ bezog sich außer- dem allein auf die verschiedenen ‚Volkspoesien‘, für die ‚Kunstpoesie‘ jedoch fehlte ein solches. Die gleichzeitige wissenschaftliche Erforschung von Volks- und Kunstpo- esie führte im Prozess der philologischen Disziplinbildung zu strukturbedingten Hemm- nissen, welche die Entstehung einer komparatistischen Methode an den deutschen Uni- versitäten verhinderten. Da Moriz Haupt zu den wenigen Philologen gehörte, der sein polyglottes und philologisch vielseitiges Forschen ansatzweise in komparatistisches Den- ken überführen konnte, lässt sich an ihm verdeutlichen, warum in der Entstehungszeit der Neuphilologien alle Philologie auf weitere Differenzierung drängte und die Syn- 124 Alexander Nebrig these ausblieb. An den Arbeiten des Schülers und Nachfolgers von Karl Lachmann (1793–1851) soll die Frage beantwortet werden, weshalb der produktive romantische Ge- danke eines universalen poetischen Geistes, von dem im ersten Drittel des 19. Jahr- hunderts die literarisch interessierten Männer motiviert gewesen waren, von der text- kritischen Praxis dermaßen eingeengt wurde. Diesen Verengungsprozess sah der Germanist Wilhelm Scherer, dessen Arbeiten im Rahmen seiner Überlegungen zu einer allgemeinen Poetik eine „Rückbesinnung auf eine wissenschaftlich fundierte komparatistische Forschung“1 erkennen lassen. Scherer ordnet im Artikel für die Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie Haupt jenen Gelehrten zu, „welche groß anheben mit breitem Wollen“, die es dann aber immer „mehr in’s Enge 2 zieht“. Haupts erste Arbeiten, vornehmlich Rezensionen, so Scherer, „preisen in poe- tisch gefärbter, bildlich geschmückter Rede die Poesie im Allgemeinen als eine leben- dige Offenbarung des Göttlichen und stellen mit bewußter Klarheit den Gedanken 3 einer vergleichenden Poetik hin“. Am Ende seiner Laufbahn wird Haupt eine Text- philologie praktizieren, die bemüht ist um möglichste Enthaltung jeden Kommentars.4 1 Wolfgang Höppner: „Deutscher Geist“ und „japanisches Wesen“. Im Seminar erklärte er, Philologie sei nicht ‚verschwimmendes Reden und Denken‘, ihre Übungen lehrten, wie man den ‚Nagel auf den Kopf‘ treffe (nach Belger [Anm. 2], S. 306). Nicht nur der Briefwechsel mit dem Romanisten Wolf, auch jener mit Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben (1798–1874) [SBBPK Ms.germ.qu.999] geben zu erkennen, „wie die peinlichste Sorgfalt für die kritische Festsetzung des Textes immer mehr in den Vordergrund tritt“ (ebenda, S. 66). Dieser Minimalismus erklärt auch Haupts Vorsicht bei der Aufstellung von Konjekturen (S. 78). Im Vorwort zu Konrad von Würzburgs Erzählung Engelhard (1844), die Ludwig Uhland – sein Briefwechsel mit Haupt liegt im DLA in Marbach [A: Uhland] – gewidmet ist, rechtfertigte er sich für die Weitläufigkeit seiner Anmerkungen. Eine solche sei gegen seine „neigung“ und diene allein dazu, die Änderung des Textes zu begründen (Engelhard. Eine Erzählung von Konrad von Würzburg mit Anmerkungen von Moriz Haupt, zweite Aufl. besorgt v. Eugen Joseph, Leipzig 1890, S. VII). Für die Neidhart-Ausgabe (1857) las Haupt nach eigener Angabe „alles gedruckte mittelhochdeutsche und manches ungedruckte wiederum“ und gestand trotzdem die Möglichkeit ein, bei sechs Jahrhunderten Distanz nicht alles verstanden zu haben (Neidharts Lieder, hrsg. v. Moriz Haupt, 2. Aufl., neu bearb. v. Edmund Wiessner, Leipzig 1923, S. XIV). Komparatistische Ansätze bei Moriz Haupt 125 Scherer, für den Haupt nicht zu einem ‚Bahnbrecher‘ geworden ist, weist auf die vielseitige Tätigkeit Haupts hin, die sich auf Gegenstände der griechischen, lateini- schen, romanischen, germanischen und slavischen Philologie erstreckte, vermutet aber, dass Haupt hier nicht mehr als Visionär gehandelt habe, weil er mit dem Gedanken einer ‚vergleichenden Poetik‘, den sein Œuvre zwar für den Betrachter nahelege, nie wirklich gerungen habe. Trotz dieser Bedenken hat Scherer Haupt an den Anfang seiner Überlegungen zu einer vergleichenden Poetik gestellt. In der Besprechung der kurz nach Haupts Tod erschienenen Neuausgabe seiner 1857 herausgegebenen Samm- lung Des minnesangs frühling 5 meint Scherer ganz im sinne Haupts zu handeln wenn ich darauf dringe dass auch in die betrachtung der lyrik die vergleichende methode eingeführt werde. der begriff der naturgeschichte des epos war ihm vollkommen geläufig. er hätte ohne weiteres zugeben müssen dass auch eine natur- geschichte der lyrik, des dramas, der fabel usw. möglich sei.6 Wenn sich Scherer, der eine vergleichende Poetik im Zusammenwirken mit Ethnolo- 7 gie, Anthropologie und ‚allgemeiner Culturwissenschaft‘ begründen möchte, auf Moriz Haupt beruft, so mündet die Forderung, „das Unternehmen einer historischen und vergleichenden poetik muss über kurz oder lang gewagt werden“,8 in einer Naturge- 9 schichte der verschiedenen Volkspoesien. Scherer, der sich so die Erklärung gemein- samer Ursprünge der Poesie erhoffte, hatte z. B. beobachtet, dass die serbische wie auch die altdeutsche Lyrik die Darstellung von Natur benutzt, um psychologische Vorgän- ge zu schildern. Wie zentral für Scherer die im Rahmen der Besprechung zur deut- schen Liedersammlung Des minnesangs frühling gemachten vergleichenden Beobachtun- gen waren, wird im Nachtrag deutlich, der kurz darauf im Anzeiger erschien.
