"A Lock Upon All Conduct:" Modesty in German Courtly Literature (c. 1175-1220) Abstract This dissertation examines notions of modesty in behavior and appearance as represented in romance and conduct literature of the German Middle Ages. I look to the Winsbecke poems and Thomasin von Zirclaria's Der Welsche Gast as representative samples of conduct literature, considering them alongside the four core courtly romances: Hartman von Aue's Iwein and Erec, Gottfried von Strassburg's Tristan, and Wolfram von Eschenbach's Parzival. The project is guided by four central areas of inquiry. First, I investigate the "cleavage" between the two genres of romance and conduct literature, exploring the ways in which they cling to each other as reference points and split off from the other's constructs. Second, I pay close attention to gender differences in the practice of modesty, investigating precisely what they are and how they structure gender roles and courtly identity. My third area of emphasis traces the ways in which sight and the body engage with notions of modesty. Finally, I examine the relevant changes the German romance authors make to their French source material. My analysis relies on three primary keywords in locating medieval modesty (zuht, kiusch, and scham), and explores the intersections between scham "shame" and scham "modesty." I show that, compared to the French originals, the German romances demonstrate a far greater interest in the display of the naked or partially naked body. These scenes, which appear with regularity, follow particular patterns according to gender: for example, a naked man is uncourtly, but a partially-naked woman has a high status. Gender is also a determining factor in the overall importance of modesty, particularly as seen in conduct literature: for a man, it is one of several critical components for knightly success, while for a woman, it provides the fundamental structure for her life. I also find unexpected complexities in the elationshipr between romance and conduct literature. Each genre has its distinct areas of permissiveness and regulation with regard to modest behavior.     INTRODUCTION What is he? I do not mean the force alone- The grace and versatility of the man! Is it not Lancelot? -Tennyson, The Idylls of the Xing. There is scarcely anyone in our time to whom the name "Lancelot" does not have a familiar sound. The average person's acquaintance with the deeds of this noble knight is likely to come from motion pictures that, while trying to portray the impossible, have such promising titles as "The Sword of Lancelot," "The Knights of the Round Table," and "Camelot," this last being an insipid version of T. H. White's enormously successful and still widely read Tlze Otzce and Future Kitzg. It is only the more serious student of English letters who derives his knowledge of Lancelot and Guinevere from the reading of Malory's Le Morte Darthrtr or Tennyson's Tlze Idylls of the Kitzg. Among these readers, Lancelot is generally recognized as King Arthur's most gallant knight and the unswerving but secret lover of Queen Guinevere, an austere and almost saintly man whom passion stirs only when he is in the direct service of his love. Lancelot's prominence throughout the last centuries is a strange phenom- enon, especially when we consider that another great Arthurian lover, Tristan, whose philosophy of love corresponds much more to our modern ideal, would most likely be forgotten if it were not for the music of Wagner. And who would seriously believe that Lancelot, the foreigner, barely eked out an existence in the literature of late medieval England while the figure of the indigenous Gawain towered gigantically over the literary horizon of that era? Perhaps ir would be even more startling to discover that Lancelot as a knight of the Round Table and as a lovcr of Queen Guinevcre is a com- paratively late addition to the Arthurian legend.

At the local and state levels, a focus is on adult entertainment exotic dance. Under the United States First Amendment to the Constitution and established law, exotic dance, a form of expression, cannot be banned solely on the grounds that some people deem it immoral. Recasting their religion-based objections within the Supreme Court “adverse secondary effects” doctrine (governments may regulate clubs if the aim is to prevent crime, property depreciation, and disease), SPACR pursues its opposition to exotic dance through laws and social actions that harm the business. The rationale for hostility is compared to facts. SPACR's secular reasoning gains support for regulations to marginalize and punish those who do not adhere to their moral values causing free speech advocates, consumers, and involved businesses to fight back. At issue are civil liberties under the U.S. Constitution, the separation of church and state, and harm to the economy. Abb., ISBN 978-3-650-40042-0, EUR 69,95. rezensiert von/compte rendu rédigé par Elmar Mittler, Berlin Der »Codex Manesse« erscheint in seiner klaren Abfolge von groûformatigen Bildern und gleichartig in zwei Kolumnen geschriebenen Texten in der Ordnung der mittelalterlichen Standesgesellschaft als klar und logisch gegliedert; erst eine genauere Betrachtung zeigt, wie verwirrend uneinheitlich und komplex das Werk ist. Bei dieser Publikation der Wissenschaftlichen Buchgesellschaft (in der Buchhandelsausgabe unter dem der WBG gehörenden Lambert Schneider firmierend) geht es einem umgekehrt. Die oft unmotivierte grafische Gestaltung mit einer Abfolge von unterschiedlich verkleinerten Bildern, die nicht immer logischen Gesetzen zu folgen scheint, verwirrt oft mehr als sie erläutert; erst beim genaueren Hinsehen merkt man, welch klar gegliedertes Konzept der Text dagegen bietet. Zur Überraschung mancher Leserin und manchen Lesers nennt das einleitende Kapitel den sicher weithin bekanntesten deutschsprachigen Codex des Mittelalters ein Buch mit sieben Siegeln. In »Vom Kaiser zum Bettelmann« folgt nicht eine inhaltliche Charakterisierung, sondern ein Traktat über Einrichtung und Anlage der Handschrift. Auch das »Zürcher Anfänge« betitelte dritte Kapitel ist stark auf die Entstehung der Handschrift ausgerichtet, die dann im vierten Abschnitt in den Kreis anderer Lyrikhandschriften des (deutschen) Mittelalters eingeordnet wird. Das Abschlusskapitel »Seltsame Wege« unterrichtet über Geschichte und Erschlieûung der Handschrift. Der Anhang gibt vor allem Hinweise auf die Literatur. Wer die Dichtung kennenzulernen sucht, wird sich über die zwischen die Kapitel eingestreuten Porträts freuen, die mit Kaiser Heinrich beginnen und mit Heinrich von Veldeke (Blatt 30v) fortgesetzt werden.

    GREAT AFFECTATIONS: CAMP PARODY IN THE BRITISH LONG EIGHTEENTH CENTURY A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Sarah Lynn Cote January 2014 © 2014 Sarah Lynn Cote GREAT AFFECTATIONS: CAMP PARODY IN THE BRITISH LONG EIGHTEENTH CENTURY Sarah Lynn Cote, Ph.D. Cornell University 2014 My dissertation explains that, despite the nominal anachronism, camp has always inhabited literature of the long eighteenth century, namely those examples that were created from and, to some degree, for those experiencing the world from a socially or sexually marginal perspective. To interpret as camp is to not only account for the excesses of style that often infuriate and discompose aesthetic and generic categories of the time period, although it can provide an explanatory motive for noticeably disruptive and even flamboyant literary style. A camp reading can also bring together seemingly disparate texts under the umbrella of alterity. It provides an ideal and common language for discussing formal and generic literary styles alongside feminist, queer, and cultural interpretations. Camp in the eighteenth century is particularly well-positioned to make important contributions to ongoing discussions about the public sphere, the shifts in audience and reception among all media, and the influences of realism, especially relating to the bourgeois representations of affects and emotions. To me, camp is a parodic project, which means that it must bear a symbiotic relationship to the normative text or value that it plays up. Its parody is reliant on those modes opposed as “other” to their marginalized selves; in my examples, the target ranges among the heteronormative family, the orderly body, the sexual object, temporal mastery, aesthetic ownership, sentimental empathy, and even the self.

    Uses of the Past in Twelfth-Century Germany: The Case of the Middle High German Kaiserchronik Mark Chinca and Christopher Young Abstract: Despite its broad transmission and its influence on vernacular chronicle writing in the German Middle Ages, the Kaiserchronik has not received the attention from historians that it deserves. This article describes some of the ideological, historical, and literary contexts that shaped the original composition of the chronicle in the middle of the twelfth century: Christian salvation history, the revival of interest in the Roman past, the consolidation of a vernacular literature of knowledge, and the emergence of a practice of writing history as “serious entertainment” by authors such as Geoffrey of Monmouth and Godfrey of Viterbo. Placed in these multiple contexts, which have a European as well as a specifically German dimension, the Kaiserchronik emerges as an important document of the uses of the past in fostering a sense of German identity among secular and ecclesiastical elites in the high Middle Ages. The Kaiserchronik, completed probably in Regensburg ca.1150, is a seminal work.1 Monumental in scale, it comprises over seventeen thousand lines of Middle High German verse and is the first verse chronicle in any European language. Through a grand narrative of the reigns of thirty-six Roman and nineteen German emperors filling a timespan of twelve centuries, it throws the spotlight on ethnicity, religion and cultural identity, and on the relationship between church and empire, as these issues play out on the various stages of Rome, Germany and their territorial outposts in the Mediterranean basin.2 The Kaiserchronik has several claims to uniqueness.

    On the Economic Origins of Constraints on Women’s Sexuality Anke Becker* November 5, 2018 Abstract This paper studies the economic origins of customs aimed at constraining female sexuality, such as a particularly invasive form of female genital cutting, restrictions on women’s mobility, and norms about female sexual behavior. The analysis tests the anthropological theory that a particular form of pre-industrial economic pro- duction – subsisting on pastoralism – favored the adoption of such customs. Pas- toralism was characterized by heightened paternity uncertainty due to frequent and often extended periods of male absence from the settlement, implying larger payoffs to imposing constraints on women’s sexuality. Using within-country vari- ation across 500,000 women in 34 countries, the paper shows that women from historically more pastoral societies (i) are significantly more likely to have under- gone infibulation, the most invasive form of female genital cutting; (ii) are more restricted in their mobility, and hold more tolerant views towards domestic vio- lence as a sanctioning device for ignoring such constraints; and (iii) adhere to more restrictive norms about virginity and promiscuity. Instrumental variable es- timations that make use of the ecological determinants of pastoralism support a causal interpretation of the results. The paper further shows that the mechanism behind these patterns is indeed male absenteeism, rather than male dominance per se. TRANSLATOE'S PEEFACE. IN this translation of the Galatea of Cervantes, the object has been to convey the story in language as closely as pos- sible to the original. The translator fears he may not alway have succeeded in completely rendering the narratives ot the various incidents which characterise this simple pastoral epic, and that also he may have to apologise for somewhat ot roughness in his transfusion of the poetry, which has found its equivalent, where the lines have been long, in blank verse. The other portions of the poetry he has rendered literally, but wherever the two dialects assimilated he has thought it sufficient to furnish only a kind of metrical rhythm. This elegant and simple production, the earliest from the pen of the eminent poet and novelist of Spain, pour- traying young, fresh, and vivid scintillations of genius, has never been translated into any language. We have only its shadow in the French production of Florian, which is based on the Spanish story, and though written in an en- gaging and graceful style, is not that mature and elegant child of the brain of Cervantes which is now for the first time presented to the English reader.
