The opening chapter provides an insight into the meaning of zorn and examines the physical signs, symptoms, and symbols of anger, as well as its theological, moral, and social significance in the Middle Ages. Chapter 2 is devoted to the analysis of zorn in Erec, then in Iwein. Comparison of the two shows how Hartmann’s attitude to anger changes: whereas, in Erec, the hero’s anger can be seen in a positive light, in Iwein, anger is almost always problematic, particularly when associated with female characters. Chapter 3 examines zorn in Parzival under four main headings: the stories of Gahmuret, Parzival, Gawan, and the Narrator. Many of the issues surrounding zorn that surface in the main body of the work are foreshadowed in Books I and II. Anger is not a major issue for Gahmuret, who himself falls prey to a cycle of violence that can be seen to extend forward into the lifetime of his son. Whilst Parzival must learn to control his zorn and appreciate its proper use, Gawan is shown to be exemplary in this respect and to exhibit the qualities of patientia, restraint, and discretion essential to controlling zorn. The zorn of the narrator, which can be glimpsed at various points in the narrative, hints at Wolfram’s personal concern with this emotion, particularly in the context of minne. Finally, a comparison between the two authors shows that Hartmann’s focus is relatively narrow by comparison with Wolfram’s. 3 TABLE OF CONTENTS Chapter 1: Introduction     INTRODUCTION What is he? I do not mean the force alone- The grace and versatility of the man! Is it not Lancelot? -Tennyson, The Idylls of the Xing. There is scarcely anyone in our time to whom the name "Lancelot" does not have a familiar sound. The average person's acquaintance with the deeds of this noble knight is likely to come from motion pictures that, while trying to portray the impossible, have such promising titles as "The Sword of Lancelot," "The Knights of the Round Table," and "Camelot," this last being an insipid version of T. H. White's enormously successful and still widely read Tlze Otzce and Future Kitzg. It is only the more serious student of English letters who derives his knowledge of Lancelot and Guinevere from the reading of Malory's Le Morte Darthrtr or Tennyson's Tlze Idylls of the Kitzg. Among these readers, Lancelot is generally recognized as King Arthur's most gallant knight and the unswerving but secret lover of Queen Guinevere, an austere and almost saintly man whom passion stirs only when he is in the direct service of his love. Lancelot's prominence throughout the last centuries is a strange phenom- enon, especially when we consider that another great Arthurian lover, Tristan, whose philosophy of love corresponds much more to our modern ideal, would most likely be forgotten if it were not for the music of Wagner. And who would seriously believe that Lancelot, the foreigner, barely eked out an existence in the literature of late medieval England while the figure of the indigenous Gawain towered gigantically over the literary horizon of that era? Perhaps ir would be even more startling to discover that Lancelot as a knight of the Round Table and as a lovcr of Queen Guinevcre is a com- paratively late addition to the Arthurian legend.

Schultz The studies that follow . are the record of a long and tentative exercise that needed to be revised and corrected again and again. It was a philosophical exercise. The object was to learn to what extent the effort to think one’s own history can free thought from what it silently thinks, and so enable it to think differently. – Michel Foucault, The Use of Pleasure In these words from the introduction to the second volume of his history of sexuality,1 Foucault suggests that a certain kind of engagement with the past might enable us to think differently. The volume that follows, a history of sexuality, would represent then an effort to engage with the past in a way that might enable us to think differently about sexuality. Writing at the end of the twelfth century, Hartmann von Aue does something similar. He uses the Arthurian past to enable him to think differently about what he calls love but which includes much of what we would call sexuality. In an attempt to make this claim plausible, I will first review some medieval views about the use of history and then explore the extent to which Hartmann, in Iwein, claims to be writing a history. Second, I will try to show how, in both Erec and Iwein, Hartmann uses the Arthurian past to think about sexuality in ways that might provoke his readers and auditors to think differently.

Naturally, there is dissention among the other lesser kings, who think Arthur is unworthy of his position. This leads to war, and young King Arthur prevails. Meanwhile, Arthur learns his true identity and accepts his fate. Unfortunately, he has already conceived a child with his half-sister. The child, Mordred, is destined to destroy Arthur and his kingdom. In the meantime, King Arthur establishes a code of ethics for the Knights of the Round Table, which helps maintain the peace of the kingdom until it is unfortunately divided from within. Book I, as mentioned, heralds the birth of Arthur and his rise to power. Their tale ends when the brothers tragically kill each other over a case of mistaken identity.

    HARTMANN VON AUE'S RELIGIOUS ATTITUDE AND DIDACTICISM IN HIS GREGORIUS 0 APPRECIATE Hartmann von Aue's moral precept Tand his attitude toward Christianity, it is necessary first to review briefly Hartmam's own character, so far as we can glimpse it from internal evidence in his works. He was Herr Hartmann, a member of the courtly circle; he shows, accord- ingly, in his Erec and Iwein a familiarity with, and apprecia- tion of, the courtly life and tone, His protected life, devoid of hardship or struggle, reflects itself in a kindly and generous attitude, permeated with a sense of Treue as the word is used in the courtly epic, Treue is a funadmental trait of Hart- mann's character, implying a reciprocal loyalty to his over- lord, as evidenced by the poet's sincere lyrical laments over his loss. Treue of wife to husband in Erec, of husband to wife in Iwein, Treue as devotion of serf to superior in Der arme Heinrich-all these evidence the importance Hartmann attached to that quality. Such recognition shows Hartmann as a true and typical member of a courtly society that ac- cepted Treue in its various meanings as a required part of the economic and social make-up. Loyalty, fidelity, allegiance -however one may interpret the term-assured a fairly se- cure and smoothly running society, without any great one- sided struggle for existence. The serf provided the means of living in return for the responsibility which the aristocrat assumed on his behalf. Hartrnam as an aristocrat shows, accordingly, no great inner struggle and relatively little depth of philosophic insight.

This has led on the one hand to functional approaches that treat the authors as a class subject to sociological analysis, and on the other to approaches that emphasize the fictionality of Minnesang as a form of role- playing in which genre conventions supersede individual contributions. I argue that the men who composed and performed these songs at court were, in fact, using them to create and curate individual profiles for themselves.
