Naturally, the writers of the time, poets, preachers, and educators, took a definite stand regarding the new developments and their works reflect their personal reactions. The didactic writers in particular are among those who record these changes most faithfully and a study of their writings proves both interesting and valuable from a cul- tural and historical point of view. Such a study this dissertation purposes to be. The investigation will include consideration of the place the nobleman was accorded in the general scheme of existence, his education and duties, his rights and privileges. Since the cen- tury witnessed the rise of the middle class, special attention will be paid to the influence which this social movement exerted upon the life of the nobles in general and upon the concept of nobility in particular. In order to suggest the source of the ideal and the background against which it is to be projected, a survey has been made of the concept of nobility, beginning with Homeric times and noting the various influences which in the course of centuries contributed something to or changed the early Greek ideal of nobility, A lack of monographs dealing with specific periods renders impossible a more thorough treatment of the subject. The chapter represents, however, the author's own independent investigation of the sources mentioned. No other work has, as far as could be ascertained, followed the same line of research. Of the literature of the thirteenth century the didactic works alone have been examined. Epical romances and other writings not of a strictly didactical nature have not been considered. The texts selected for investigation are : the Winshecke and the Winsheckin, the Wdlsche Gast of Thomasin of Zerclaere, Freidank's Bescheiden- heit, and the Renner of Hugo of Trimberg. These works were chosen because of their highly representative character, reflecting, as they do in a very striking manner, the point of view of the period. During the past years valuable contributions have been made towards a better understanding and appreciation of the didactic vi Preface writers ; ^ but, aside from scattered references to the social, ethical, and religious aspects of nobility in studies concerning the ethical teaching of the didactic writers,^ no comprehensive investigation of this subject has been made. Friedrich Vogt, in his ReTctoratsrede, Der Bedeutungswandel des Wortes edel (Marburg, 1909), traced the historical development of the term edel, with a slight emphasis on the didactic writings, but he ignored almost entirely the social and religious side of the problem. Gustav Neckel in an excellent article, Adel und Gefolgschaft,^ investigated early Germanic nobil- ity from a philological point of view. The political and legal aspects of the problem of nobility in Germany have also been treated by prominent historians,* though no definite conclusions have been * Moriz Haupt, Albert Leitzmann, Hans-Friedrich Rosenfeld, and S. Anholt concerned themselves principally with Winsiecke and Winsbeckin; Hans Teske supplied the latest information regarding Thomasin von Zerclaere and his work, Der Wdlsche Gast. Unfortunately, Friedrich Neumann died before he was able to publish his promised " Freidankstudien " and a new " edition of Freidank's Bescheidenheit ; his two articles, however, Frei- danks Lehre von der Seele," Festschrift Max H. Jellinek (Wien und Leipzig, 1928), 86-96, and " Scholastik und mittelhochdeutsche Literatur," Neue Jahrb. 49-50 (1922), 388-404, contribute much toward a better under- standing of this writer. The most prominent scholar in the field of medieval German literature in general and the didactic writers in particu- lar is Gustav Ehrismann. Besides his history of medieval German litera- ture (the 4th volume dealing with the didactic writers has not yet appeared), and a number of learned articles, his critical edition of Hugo of Trimberg's Renner is still unsurpassed. No attempt is made in the present study to deal with the philological, legal, or political side of the problem. That task has been left to more competent scholars for final treatment, while the author has endeavored to approach the subject from the social, ethical, and religious angles. This investigation of the personal ideals of the age should be of service to anyone interested in the problems of medieval culture and thought. The difficulty of achieving a fair representation of the religious background of medieval times has often been felt by non-Catholic writers. The evidence presented here may serve to show the extent to which religious thought influenced the life of the people, particularly that of the upper classes, and how the didactic writers strove to derive from an eclectic harmony of Pagan and Christian philosophies a rule of conduct for Christian nobility which measured natural virtue by the scale of supernatural values.     PETER BUCHHOLZ Religious Foundations of Group Identity in Prehistoric Europe: The Germanic Peoples Any reader of Heimskringla ("circle of the earth"), the history of the kings of Norway by the great 13th century Icelandic writer Snorri Sturluson, will be struck by the enormous weight which the author attaches to religion. This refers both to Christianity and to pagan phenomena which preceded and even co-existed with it for some time. Snorri's work should, in my view, be ascribed a relatively high source value, if only because it is demonstrably based on older traditions either fixed in poetry or transmitted as oral prose. Öral tradition is of course not the topic of the present paper (cf. Buchholz 1980; Buchholz 1991), but the preservation of such traditions alone, many of which contain religious material, does indeed show that society or parts of it attached sufficient importance to such phenomena as to commit them to memory, parchment, runic signs or pictorial representation. The last scribe or "author" may of course have had considerable antiquarian interests, as is evident e.g. in some of the mythic poems of the Elder Edda, but such interests cannot be regarded as the cause for the existence of the myth, but only as one of the reasons for its preservation. We shall hopefully glimpse something of the role of myth in Germanic societies in the course of my paper. Leaving Myth aside for the moment, I want to stress that ÖN prose material, including Heimskringla, shows a marked interest in the concrete manifestations of cult (which, for paganism as seen through Christian eyes at least, definitely includes magic) and belief.

Gras, the father of Business History in the United States, argued that the era of mercantile capitalism was defined by the figure of the “sedentary merchant,” who managed his business from home, using correspondence and intermediaries, in contrast to the earlier “traveling merchant,” who accompanied his own goods to trade fairs. Taking this concept as its point of departure, this essay focuses on the predominantly Italian merchants who controlled the long‐distance East‐West trade of the Mediterranean during the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Until the opening of the Atlantic trade, the Mediterranean was Europe’s most important commercial zone and its trade enriched European civilization and its merchants developed the most important premodern mercantile innovations, from maritime insurance contracts and partnership agreements to the bill of exchange and double‐entry bookkeeping. Emerging from literate and numerate cultures, these merchants left behind an abundance of records that allows us to understand how their companies, especially the largest of them, were organized and managed.

I was in Athens to deliver some lectures, but I was witnessing, if press reports were to be believed, what appeared to be the imminent downfall of the cradle of Western civilization and the disturbing inertia toward its plight displayed by the rest of the Eu ro pean family of nations. The pillars of a functioning state were shaking: inflation, unemployment, and the national debt were out of control, and law and order on the verge of collapse. The dying pro­ cess was confirmed when one day state TV was abruptly and in def initely suspended as employees could no longer receive their salaries. The last straw was the steady trickle of desperate refugees arriving from North Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia swelling the ranks of those impoverished mi grants already pres ent. Squeezed by the economic crisis, the traditionally hospitable Greeks vented their frustrations at the unend­ ing numbers of refugees and immigrants as they sought aid and refuge; and the greater the economic woes, the greater the popularity of the Far Right parties and the more extreme their rhe toric of hate. Groups like the Golden Dawn, with their swastika-­like emblem, were parading about dressed up as faux-­Nazis, giving Nazi salutes, and even displaying pictures of Adolf Hitler. Their target this time around was the mainly Muslim refugee and immigrant community. Their message was simple and effective, and it was influencing how people thought about the subject: Muslims were not part of Eu ro pean identity, nor had they contributed anything to Western civili­ zation.

    THE MIDDLE AGES 1 1 The Middle Ages Introduction The Middle Ages lasted a thousand years, from the break-up of the Roman Empire in the fifth century to the end of the fifteenth, when there was an awareness that a ‘dark time’ (Rabelais dismissively called it ‘gothic’) separated the present from the classical world. During this medium aevum or ‘Middle Age’, situated between classical antiquity and modern times, the centre of the world moved north as the civil- ization of the Mediterranean joined forces with the vigorous culture of temperate Europe. Rather than an Age, however, it is more appropriate to speak of Ages, for surges of decay and renewal over ten centuries redrew the political, social and cultural map of Europe, by war, marriage and treaty. By the sixth century, Christianity was replacing older gods and the organized fabric of the Roman Empire had been eroded and trading patterns disrupted. Although the Church kept administrative structures and learning alive, barbarian encroachments from the north and Saracen invasions from the south posed a continuing threat. The work of undoing the fragmentation of Rome’s imperial domain was undertaken by Charlemagne (742–814), who created a Holy Roman Empire, and subsequently by his successors over many centuries who, in bursts of military and administrative activity, bought, earned or coerced the loyalty of the rulers of the many duchies and comtés which formed the patchwork of feudal territories that was France. This process of centralization proceeded at variable speeds. After the break-up of Charlemagne’s empire at the end of the tenth century, ‘France’ was a kingdom which occupied the region now known as 2 THE MIDDLE AGES the Île de France.
