HICKSON* introduction theodicy and toleration seem at first glance to be an unlikely pair of topics to treat in a single paper. Toleration usually means putting up with beliefs or ac- tions with which one disagrees, and it is practiced because the beliefs or actions in question are not disagreeable enough to justify interference. It is usually taken to be a topic for moral and political philosophy. Theodicy, on the other hand, is the attempt to solve the problem of evil; that is, to explain the origin of suffering and sin in a way that does not make God a moral cause of those evils.1 While theodicy concerns the notions of good and evil, and could therefore be considered a moral topic, historical and contemporary discussions of it have been predominantly meta- physical and epistemological in scope. Toleration and theodicy would therefore seem to belong to entirely different spheres of philosophical inquiry. When the paper in question is about Pierre Bayle, however, as this one is, treating these two topics together should seem more plausible, since the first half of Bayle’s career was spent arguing for toleration, while much of the latter half was devoted to defending his controversial thesis that there could be no purely rational solution to the problem of evil. -

Whereas most discussions of this topic deal with the growth of religious idealism in romance, here I shall concentrate rather on the development of hagiography in the direction of rot:nance in the specific case of the legend of 5t George. In a classic series of articles published in the early years of this century, lE. Matzke documented the development of this legend from its earliest known forms to its 'romanticization' in the work of Richard Johnson at the end of the sixteenth century.2 What I wish to do here is to consider in more detail some later forms of the story (from the introduction of the dragon-fight onwards) and, in particular, to reassess the nature of the relationship between the story of St George in Johnson's Seven Champions a/Christendom and the Middle English romance of Sir Bevis 0/ Hampton. -

Der Dresdner Hofpoet Johann Seusse Eine Ergänzung zu Jörg-Ulrich Fechners Beitrag im Schütz-Jahrbuch 6 (1984) EBERHARD MÖLLER er kurfürstliche Sekretär und Hofpoet Johann Seusse (Seussius) ist der musikwissen- D schaftlichen Forschung durch insgesamt fünf lateinische Epicedien zu den Psalmen Da- vids und Cantiones sacrae von Schütz bekannt. In einer Festschrift von 1617 mit lateinischen Distichien und den Willkommensstrophen „Caesar ave“ von Schütz ist auch Seusse mit ei- nem Beitrag vertreten1. Jörg-Ulrich Fechner hat seiner Untersuchung Ein unbekanntes weltliches Madrigal von Heinrich Schütz im Schütz-Jahrbuch von 19842 eine Auflistung der ihm bekannten Veröffentlichungen Seusses beigefügt. Darin sind die Seussius-Drucke der Universitäts- und Landesbibliothek Dresden mit 44 Titeln relativ vollständig erfasst. Hinzu kommen 50 Druckeinheiten, vorwie- gend aus dem Bestand der Stolberg-Stolberg’schen Leichenpredigten-Sammlung. In der Rats- schulbibliothek Zwickau fanden sich in den letzten Jahren zahlreiche weitere bisher unbe- kannte Drucke, so dass die nachfolgenden Angaben – die sich als Ergänzung zu Fechners Beitrag verstehen – Berechtigung haben dürften. Nähere Beziehungen zwischen Schütz und Seusse, beide in herausragenden Ämtern am Dresdner Hofe tätig, sind bisher nicht bekannt. Die lateinischen Epicedien Seusses in den ge- nannten Schütz-Drucken lassen das jedoch annehmen. Seusse verfügte über gute Kenntnisse auf dem Gebiet der Musik. In deutschen und lateinischen Gedichten kam er oft auf die Musik zu sprechen. Im Oktober 1621 gehörte er zu dem 855 Personen umfassenden Gefolge von Kurfürst Johann Georg I. bei dessen in Vertretung des Kaisers erfolgten Huldigung durch die schlesischen Stände in Breslau3. Scott Dixon On 10 November 1837 Friedrich Heinrich von der Hagen, professor extraordinarius at the University of Berlin, gave a talk entitled ‘Proof, that Dr Martin Luther never existed’. As a specialist in medieval German sagas, von der Hagen used all of his considerable learning to convince his audience that there were too many historico-mythical topoi in Luther’s life to take him seriously as a real historical figure. -

Parker Allan Cotton Master of Theology Wycliffe College and the University of Toronto 2017 Abstract This thesis examines Bayle’s use of Scripture within the Dictionnaire and attempts to bridge the gap between questions of Bayle’s beliefs and attitudes towards religion and his well- acknowledged interest in religious toleration. Through a survey of the Dictionnaire it demonstrates that Bayle not only referenced Scripture often, and in seemingly pious ways, he does so in articles discussing moral failings of biblical heroes while maintaining that he is not attempting to undermine Christian faith. Two main insights emerge. First, the situating of toleration discussions within biblical/religious contexts in the Dictionnaire connects the two and sees Bayle questioning whether those who believe they are justified in persecuting can really have this confidence. In absence of this assurance, toleration is a preferred path. Second, by demonstrating an alternative possibility to Bayle’s scandalous takes on Old Testament figures and discussions of God, this thesis suggests that an atheistic reading of Bayle is improbable. -

It argues that the issue of counsel was important in the polemics against Jesuit moral theology. Theological challenges to Probabilism clearly show that many intellectuals were worried it could lead political counsellors astray and encourage them to defer to the whims of political authorities. This was not mere- ly a theoretical issue. Three French cases evidence the fact that political counsellors could claim an obligation to put obedience to their sovereign before obedience to religious authority—the pope in particular—on religious grounds. The discussion between anti-probabilists and probabilists during the second half of the seventeenth century shows the degree of unrest among theological and ecclesiastical authorities confronted with the demands of the state on individual conscience, and on the con- science of counsellors in particular. The Dual Image of the West in the Eyes of the Poles Magdalena Micińska THE APPEAL of the West has always been one of the most vivid topics in the history of Poland, an intellectual challenge for thinkers, an inspiring subject for men of letters and an important element of Polish self-identification. Since the very beginning of the Polish state in the early Middle Ages the dichotomy West-East, or the opposition between Western civilization and native, homely ideals, has nourished our politics, our philosophy and poetry. For the founders of the state, the rulers of the Piast dynasty, and for the Polish Church, the West was always the reference point. From the end of the Middle Ages and through the period of the Renaissance Poland was in union with the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and the country expanded to the East of Europe; nevertheless the ties with Western culture grew thicker and stronger and reached a climax in the i6th century. The following age witnessed a weakening of these ties ; the Counter-Reformation and the reversals of political fortune in the 17th century inspired the native, closed culture of the Polish gentry who called themselves Sarmatians. The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and its citizens became isolated from the intellectual trends and changes of European civilization. The Enlightenment disturbed this frame of mind, but also revealed the notion of Polish backwardness. It was the period of creating—or inventing—the basic ideas of modern European culture, including the idea of civilization; at the same time the idea of suburbs arose; the East—to use the catchy words of Larry Wolff—was invented. -

Noah’s Ark or the Barque of St. Peter represent the community of the saved and redeemed. However, since Plato at least, the ship also symbolizes the Greek polis and later the Roman Empire. From the fourth century ‒ the Constantinian era ‒ on, these traditions merged. Christianity was made the state religion. Over the course of a millennium, church and state united in a religiously homogeneous, yet not always harmonious, Corpus Christianum. In the sixteenth century, the Reformation led to disenchantment with the sacred character of both church and state as mediators indispensible for religious and secular salvation. -

PIERRE BAYLE AND HUMAN RIGHTS: LA LIBERTÉ DE LA CONSCIENCE THE GENESIS OF RELIGIOUS FREEDOM IN WESTERN DEMOCRACY Robert Fulton Northern Illinois University It is a monster who during peace makes the evils of war, and whose pride knows no laws.1 In 1685, Louis XIV sent shock waves throughout Europe by revoking the longstanding Edict of Nantes, thereby signaling that he was ready to re-embrace Catholicism as the official religion of the kingdom. In doing so he created one of the largest diasporas of early modern times.2 More than 200,000 of the approximately one million Protestants fled France, using any means available, and some of the Huguenot émigrés formed a small but vocal group of exiles. Pierre Bayle (1647-1706) and Pierre Jurieu (1637-1713) were two Huguenots refugees who left France for the Netherlands even before the Revocation. However, the two of them could not have been more distinct in terms of their political beliefs. While both Bayle and Jurieu defended against ideological assaults by French Catholic intellectuals, Jurieu was just as vehement in his theoretical disputes with fellow Protestants. Bayle, despite his broader (and Enlightenment) reputation as a skeptic, was meanwhile advocating tolerance with respect to all religious beliefs.
