From Unification to Integration: The German North Sea Ports' absorption into Imperial Germany, 1866–1914 Henning Kuhlmann Submitted for the award of Master of Philosophy in History Cardiff University 2016 Summary This thesis concentrates on the economic integration of three principal German North Sea ports – Emden, Bremen and Hamburg – into the Bismarckian nation- state. Prior to the outbreak of the First World War, Emden, Hamburg and Bremen handled a major share of the German Empire’s total overseas trade. However, at the time of the foundation of the Kaiserreich, the cities’ roles within the Empire and the new German nation-state were not yet fully defined. Initially, Hamburg and Bremen insisted upon their traditional role as independent city-states and remained outside the Empire’s customs union. Emden, meanwhile, had welcomed outright annexation by Prussia in 1866. After centuries of economic stagnation, the city had great difficulties competing with Hamburg and Bremen and was hoping for Prussian support. This thesis examines how it was possible to integrate these port cities on an economic and on an underlying level of civic mentalities and local identities. Existing studies have often overlooked the importance that Bismarck attributed to the cultural or indeed the ideological re-alignment of Hamburg and Bremen. Therefore, this study will look at the way the people of Hamburg and Bremen traditionally defined their (liberal) identity and the way this changed during the 1870s and 1880s. It will also investigate the role of the acquisition of colonies during the process of Hamburg and Bremen’s accession. In Hamburg in particular, the agreement to join the customs union had a significant impact on the merchants’ stance on colonialism. -

Fathers of the Church, Part 2: The Latin (or Western) Fathers A previous In Focus explored some of the great Fathers of the Eastern, or Greek, Church. This week the Latin (Western) Fathers are highlighted. While there is no official list of the Fathers, since the fifth century the criteria for selection has been that the individuals lived holy lives, were orthodox in their teachings and writings, lived during antiquity (the first through seventh centuries) and have been approved by the Church. According to some historians, there are more than 100 total Church Fathers (East and West); many of the same names are found on the different lists. The Fathers helped define, establish and promote the dogmas of the Catholic faith. They not only explained and advanced Christianity, but they stood against those who would defame, deny or exploit our Lord, Jesus Christ. This author is not able to adequately measure or describe the sanctity of these men, who were popes, bishops, theologians, apologists and writers. Some are saints, and all gave themselves in the service of the Lord. Here are a handful among the giants from the Western Church who have the title Church Father. They are categorized by those who lived just before the Council of Nicea, those in the era of Nicea and those after the council, up through the seventh century. A RELIGION IN ITS TIME: NUMEROLOGY AND MORAL ALCHEMY IN PHILIPPE DE MÉZIÈRES’ WORK Joël Blanchard In his cell at the Celestines’ monastery, the Vieil Pélerin [The Old Pilgrim], also known as Ardant Désir [Burning Desire], has a dream. A lady of light, Divine Providence, attended by her ladies-in-waiting, appears to him to announce to him nothing less than the necessary reform of Christianity and of the kingdom of France. The wall that men have erected through their sins between themselves and God must be brought down. The biblical parable of the talents urges that those men who have the ability, and first among them the Vieil Pélerin, make the most of these talents on behalf of the renascence of the kingdom of God and in the service of the kingdom of France. Thus will one be able to help France’s new sovereign, the “blanc faucon aux bec et aux pattes dorés” [the golden-billed and golden-legged white falcon], Charles VI, in his mission. Yet, prior to everything, an inquiry has to be carried out and an inventory made in every part of the Christian world, so the necessary remedies could be determined. Only then will the “belle monnoie de la sainte arquemie” [the beautiful coinage of holy alchemy], moral alchemy being meant here, be able to circulate in the whole world and the philosopher’s stone be discovered.1 Le songe du vieil pelerin is as much an initiatory tale as a work deal- ing with politics (and political morality), history and geography, which plunges us right into the tragic end of the Middle Ages. -

All we can claim with any degree of historical certainty is that Jesus died some time around Passover (perhaps a week or so before the feast) between 29 and 34 CE. -

BASIC STRUCTURES IN EUROPE AND GERMANY – LONG TERM REGIONAL DISPARITIES Professor Lothar EICHHORN Statistical Office of Lower Saxony, Germany Summary A. The Statistical Office of Lower Saxony has, since 1998, been calculating, on an annual basis, poverty and wealth rates in the Bundesland of Lower Saxony on the basis of the microcensus, whereby net equivalent incomes are calculated using graded income data for various types of household. The threshold values for poverty and wealth have, since 1998, been 50% and 200% respectively of the net equivalent income. However, there has always been a need for more detailed regional data, as Lower Saxony (a NUTS I region) covers a very varied territory, ranging from dynamically growing areas in the west to areas with shrinking economies in the south and east. There are very wealthy areas, mainly around the big cities, and – at least by German standards – rather poor ones. For this reason, the last calculation, for 2004, was also carried out for the 11 regional conversion strata in the Land microcensus – these are larger regions or combinations of several smaller NUTS III regions. The question arose as to which average to use for calculating the poverty threshold. The average income in Germany, in Lower Saxony or in the region in question? This is important, since there are considerable regional income disparities, as the following table shows. In the table, the poverty rate is calculated on the basis of the relevant regional ("regional concept") or national ("national concept") average income.
