This is done by analysing four different series from 2010s, in which incest is a major theme. The analysis is done using visual analysis. The study concludes that although the series can show sexualization of drawn underage girls, reading the works as if they would posit either real or fictional little sisters as sexual targets. Instead, the analysis suggests that following the narrative, the works should be read as fictional underage girls expressing a pure feelings and sexuality, unspoiled by adult corruption. To understand moe, it is necessary to understand the history of Japanese animation. Much of the genres, themes and styles in manga and anime are due to Tezuka Osamu, the “god of manga” and “god of animation”. From the 1950s, Tezuka was influenced by Disney and other western animators at the time. -

The objects examined include one such handscroll painting, several illustrated books from the Sakamaki-Hawley Collection, University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Library, and Hokusai Ryūkyū Hakkei, an 1832 series of eight landscape prints depicting sites in Okinawa. Drawing upon previous scholarship on the role of popular publishing in forming conceptions of “Japan” or of “national identity” at this time, a media discourse approach is employed to argue that such publications can serve as reliable indicators of understandings -

Atkins Asian Languages and Literature This study is an attempt to elucidate the complex interrelationship between gender, sexuality, desire, and power by examining how premodern Japanese texts represent the gender-based ideals of women and men at the peak and margins of the social hierarchy. To do so, it will survey a wide range of premodern texts and contrast the literary depictions of two female groups (imperial priestesses and courtesans), two male groups (elite warriors and outlaws), and two groups of Buddhist priests (elite and “corrupt” monks). In my view, each of the pairs signifies hyperfemininities, hypermasculinities, and hypersexualities of elite and outcast classes, respectively. The ultimate goal of 4 this study is to contribute to the current body of research in classical Japanese literature by offering new readings of some of the well-known texts featuring the above-mentioned six groups. My interpretations of the previously studied texts will be based on an argument that, in a cultural/literary context wherein defiance merges with sexual attractiveness and/or sexual freedom, one’s outcast status transforms into a source of significant power. -

Amidst the many and varied colors of Kamakura’s four seasons, the four sisters cause each other emotional anguish, and support each other through life’s trials, developing a very special bond in the process. -

Il Giappone dei Manga LO SPECCHIO DELLA SOCIETÀ GIAPPONESE NEL FUMETTO E NEL CINEMA DI ANIMAZIONE di Gianluca Di Fratta Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca 11 ottobre 2018 L’utilizzo di testo e immagini è riservato Le origini del manga in Giappone sono fatte risalire all’epoca Meiji (1868-1912) e riportate all’esempio dei primi disegnatori stranieri che furono attivi in quegli anni. La nascita di un giornalismo illustrato favorisce la diffusione di una vignetta, spesso umoristica o satirica, interessata agli avvenimenti politici e all’evoluzione dei costumi, che vede tra i suoi principali esponenti Kitazawa Rakuten. In epoca Taisho (1912-1926) il manga risente del clima di fermento culturale che caratterizza il periodo: - grande editoria - edizioni economiche - produzione di massa - movimenti di avanguardia occidentali Emergono i primi esempi di manga indirizzati a un pubblico giovanile grazie ad autori quali Kabashima Katsuichi (Shochan no boken) e Aso Yutaka (Nonkina tosan): - fukidashi - linguaggio scritto e iconico - convenzioni grafiche - katei manga Gli anni Trenta vedono l’affermazione del potere militare in Giappone e il manga è utilizzato per la propaganda imperialistica del paese. Ciò non influisce sulla qualità dei disegni e dei contenuti come dimostra l’opera di Tagawa Suiho (Norakuro) e di Sakamoto Gajo (Tanku Tankuro) e l’abbondante produzione di manga per ragazzi che continuerà fino al diretto coinvolgimento degli autori nelle azioni di sostegno alla guerra. Soggetto favorito dei manga del dopoguerra è la realtà quotidiana colta con toni realistici, intenti satirici o caricaturali, vigore polemico: - nuovi costumi - situazione economica - bilancio delle vittime - interrogativi sulle responsabilità Nella seconda metà degli anni Quaranta nei manga emerge l’immagine di un Giappone in ricostruzione di cui si fanno portavoce Nanbu Shotaro e Hasegawa Machiko (Sazae-san) attraverso la loro produzione umoristica. -

From Translation to Adaptation: Chinese Language Texts and Early Modern Japanese Literature Nan Ma Hartmann Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 © 2014 Nan Ma Hartmann All rights reserved ABSTRACT From Translation to Adaptation: Chinese Language Texts and Early Modern Japanese Literature Nan Ma Hartmann This dissertation examines the reception of Chinese language and literature during Tokugawa period Japan, highlighting the importation of vernacular Chinese, the transformation of literary styles, and the translation of narrative fiction. By analyzing the social and linguistic influences of the reception and adaptation of Chinese vernacular fiction, I hope to improve our understanding of genre development and linguistic diversification in early modern Japanese literature. This dissertation historically and linguistically contextualizes the vernacularization movements and adaptations of Chinese texts in the seventeenth to eighteenth centuries, showing how literary importation and localization were essential stimulants and also a paradigmatic shift that generated new platforms for Japanese literature. Chapter 1 places the early introduction of vernacular Chinese language in its social and cultural contexts, focusing on its route of propagation from the Nagasaki translator community to literati and scholars in Edo, and its elevation from a utilitarian language to an object of literary and political interest. Central figures include Okajima Kazan (1674-1728) and Ogyû Sorai (1666-1728). Chapter 2 continues the discussion of the popularization of vernacular Chinese among elite intellectuals, represented by the Ken’en School of scholars and their Chinese study group, “the Translation Society.” This chapter discusses the methodology of the study of Chinese by surveying a number of primers and dictionaries compiled for reading vernacular Chinese and comparing such material with methodologies for reading classical Chinese. -

Yet, its obscure dialect and the changes that have occurred in the English language over the intervening six hundred years make the poem unavailable to an un trained modern reader. This paper is a translation into Modern English of the Middle English Pearl, with a critical introduction and commentary. The opening essay and the commentary serve as an introduction to the critical and linguistic issues that make up the large body of scholarship on the poem. Questions concerning the nature of Pearl, the significance of its imagery, its relationship to other poems, and the identity and orthodoxy of its author have been raised and debated since Pearl was first published in 1864. The commentary in particular addresses textual matters such as v the derivation of a debatable word or the effect a particu lar passage has on the interpretation of the poem as a whole. -

Previous studies have interpreted kokugaku as a linguistically constituted communitarian movement that paved the way for the makings of Japanese national identity. My analysis demonstrates, however, that Norinaga¾by far the most well-known kokugaku thinker¾was more interested in pulling a fundamental ontology out from language than tying a politics of identity into it: grammatical codes, prosodic rhythms, and sounds and their attendant sensations were taken not as tools for interpersonal communication but as themselves visible and/or audible threads in the fabric of the cosmos. Norinaga’s work was thus undergirded by a positive understanding ii of language as ontologically grounded within the cosmos, a framework he borrowed implicitly from the seventeenth-century Shingon monk Keichū (1640-1701) and esoteric Buddhist (mikkyō) theories of language. Through philological investigation into ancient texts, both Norinaga and Keichū believed, the profane dust that clouded (sacred, cosmic) truth could be swept away, as if by a jeweled broom. -
