Dearth and Duality: Borges' Female Fictional Characters
DEARTH AND DUALITY: BORGES' FEMALE FICTIONAL CHARACTERS When studying Borges' fiction, the reader is immediately struck by the dear_th of female characters or love interest. Borges, who has often been questioned about this aspect of his work confided to Gloria Alcorta years ago: "alors si je n 'ecris pas sur ses sujects, c 'est simplememnt par·pudeur ... sans doute ai-je-ete trop ocupe par l'amour dans rna vie privee pour en parler dans roes livres."1 At the age of eighty, when questioned by Coffa, Borges said: "If I have created any character, I don't think so, I am always writing about myself ... It is always the same old Borges, only slightly disguised. "2 Many critics have decried lack of female characters and character development. Alicia Jurado likens Borges to a stage director who uses women as one would furniture or sets, in order to create environment. She says:" son borrosos o casuales o lo minimo indiferenciadas y pasi vas. "3 E.D. Carter calls Borges' women little more than abstractions or symbolic interpretations.4 Picknhayn says that Borges' women "aparecen distorsionadas ... hasta el punto de transformar cada mujer en una cosa amorfa y carente de personalidad. " 5 and Lloyd King feels that the women of Borges' stories "always at best seem instrumental. "6 All of the above can be said of most of his male characters because none of Borges' characters can be classified in the traditional sense. A Vilari or Hladik is no more real than a Beatriz or Ulrica. Juan Otalora is no more real than la Pelirroja and Red Scharlach is no more real than Emma Zunz. -

UFO WAVES: an INTERNATIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHY Vicente-Juan Ballester Olmos FOTOCAT Project [email protected]
UFO WAVES: AN INTERNATIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHY Vicente-Juan Ballester Olmos FOTOCAT Project [email protected] Introduction In the study of UFO phenomena there are several topics that emerge as key issues for the understanding and potential resolution of this worldwide enigma. The subject of UFO waves and UFO flaps is, evidently, one of these. Compiling bibliographies of research items has been a recurrent interest in my investigative life (1-7), as I have always thought that, as in mainstream science disciplines, progress is linked to the knowledge of prior work in the field. Those who ignore what their senior colleagues have produced on a given matter waste time duplicating past efforts or are unable to build upon previous finds. Over the years, the field of ufology has produced many authoritative bibliographies. With a few exceptions, these are general lists of literature, sometimes annotated, but usually not organized by topic (8-28). Nevertheless, these assist the researcher and represent an academic advancement. As I am committed to the concept of achieving a synthesis of knowledge in some of the main areas of the study of UFOs (29), I think a more pragmatic approach is to design a series of very specific, subject-focused bibliographies. As a practical example, I have combed through my files to create a thorough bibliography of articles and papers related to the mystery of UFO waves, those periods when UFO reporting increases noticeably and suddenly with respect to average historical records. I have been assisted by a number of top scholars who have contributed references, actual materials, pdfs and online links to create what is intended to be a comprehensive list of the literature on this subject published all over the world. -
United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)
United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization UNESCO 2016 Cover The recent large-scale, systematic destruction and looting of cultural heritage has been the dominant theme at UNESCO throughout 2016. One of the Organization’s responses to these attacks on cultural heritage and cultural pluralism is the #Unite4Heritage campaign, a global movement that calls on everyone to harvest the power of culture to bring people together and to celebrate the places, objects and cultural traditions that make the world such a rich and vibrant place. This image produced for the campaign combines past and present, with the head of Buddha Shakyamuni and the face of an Erbore tribe warrior from Ethiopia. © Public Domain LACMA - Los Angeles County Museum of Art/Rod Waddington Published in 2017 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). 7, place de Fontenoy, 75352 Paris 07 SP, France © UNESCO 2017 This publication is available in Open Access under the Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 IGO (CC-BY-SA 3.0 IGO) license (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/igo/). Ufos, Aliens and Crop Circles
Wilbert B Smith - from Sceptic to Contactee 7. Wilbert B Smith - from Sceptic to Contactee This chapter is adapted from an article written in July 2013, which was itself based on a presentation I compiled in 2003, from research completed by Grant Cameron and others. “The human race in the form of man extends throughout the universe and is incredibly ancient.” These were the words of a certain Canadian radio engineer in a speech he recorded on March 31, 1958 at his home in Ottawa Ontario Canada. I discovered these words, sometime in 2003, thanks to the wonderful website of the extremely knowledgeable Grant Cameron. That website is www.presidentialufo.com (now “moved” to an archive area223) – and it contains a great deal of useful and compelling information and evidence pertaining to the US Government’s and US Presidential knowledge of the UFO/ET issue. Cameron, who became interested in this subject following his personal UFO/ET related-experiences in the 1970s, had been collecting information on Wilbert Smith for about 25 years and he had posted a small selection of it on his website. Other researchers, such as Arthur Bray have also collected and preserved Smith materials and prevented their untimely removal by government employees. Back in 2003, I obtained a CD copy of Grant Cameron’s collection of Smith related files. When I “opened” this treasure trove of information, it became clear to me that a lot more was known about UFO’s/Flying Saucers in the 1950s than I ever realised – at least, things were known by those who chose to seriously investigate the available evidence… Wilbert Brockhouse Smith is not a name which normally comes to mind for most people when they are discussing the evidence pertaining to UFO’s and extra-terrestrial intelligence. -
Laissez-Faire Regulation, the Public Spending Squeeze and the Drive to Digital Guy Starkey*
Cultural Trends, 2015 http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/09548963.2014.1000591 COMMENTARY 5 Cultural policy in the coalition years: Laissez-faire regulation, the public spending squeeze and the drive to digital Guy Starkey* 10 Centre for Research in Media & Cultural Studies, University of Sunderland, Sunderland, UK Introduction Radio, so often described by academics as the “invisible” (Lewis & Booth, 1989), “Cinder- ” – “ ” 15 ella (Halesworth, 1971, pp. 189 191) or even forgotten medium (Pease & Dennis, 1994), has enjoyed a relatively settled period under the coalition government. There has been no crisis of confidence over ethical and legal issues, as exposed in the press by Leveson and the police operations, Elveden, Tuleta and Weeting. There have been few head- line-grabbing (if difficult-to-evaluate) initiatives like local television, as exemplified by London Live or Made in Tyne & Wear, and no government-rocking conflicts of interest as 20 spectacular as that over the ownership of BSkyB. Nor indeed has there been any game-chan- ging reorganisation of public funding, similar to the Arts Council’s lists of winners and losers. Yet, as is so often the case, radio remains a significant, but largely, ignored medium. In terms of government policy, it has suffered mixed fortunes under the five years of the coalition. Official listening figures continue to confirm recent trends in radio’s fortunes. If radio grabs 25 little of the media limelight, it remains a medium with an enviable ubiquity. It may have been slow to win audiences among younger people as large as when it broke new music and pro- vided the kind of escapism sought by youth in the 1960s and 1970s. -

SUNlite Shedding some light on UFOlogy and UFOs VOICES FROM THE WOODS When we got within a 50 meter distance. The object was producing red and blue light. The blue light was steady and projecting under the object. It was lighting up the area directly under extending a meter or two out. At this point of positive identification I relayed to CSC, SSgt Coffey. Positive sighting of object...colour of lights and that it was definitely mechanical in nature. This is the closest point Penniston relayed that he was close enough to the object to determine that it that I was near the object at any point. We then proceeded after it. It moved in a was definitely a mechanical object. He stated he was within approximately 50 zig-zagging manner back through the woods then lost sight of it. - Jim Penniston meters....Each time Penniston gave me the indication that he was about to reach January 1981 statement the area where the lights were, he would give an extended estimated location. He eventually arrived at a “beacon light”, however, he stated that this was not the light or lights he had originally observed. He was instructed to return. - J. D. Chandler January 1981 statement We climbed over the fence and started heading towards the red and blue lights and they just disappeared. Once we reached the farmer’s house we could see a beacon going around so we went towards it. We followed it for about 2 miles be- fore we could see it was coming from a lighthouse. -
Archons (Commanders) [NOTICE: They Are NOT Anlien Parasites], and Then, in a Mirror Image of the Great Emanations of the Pleroma, Hundreds of Lesser Angels
A R C H O N S HIDDEN RULERS THROUGH THE AGES A R C H O N S HIDDEN RULERS THROUGH THE AGES WATCH THIS IMPORTANT VIDEO UFOs, Aliens, and the Question of Contact MUST-SEE THE OCCULT REASON FOR PSYCHOPATHY Organic Portals: Aliens and Psychopaths KNOWLEDGE THROUGH GNOSIS Boris Mouravieff - GNOSIS IN THE BEGINNING ...1 The Gnostic core belief was a strong dualism: that the world of matter was deadening and inferior to a remote nonphysical home, to which an interior divine spark in most humans aspired to return after death. This led them to an absorption with the Jewish creation myths in Genesis, which they obsessively reinterpreted to formulate allegorical explanations of how humans ended up trapped in the world of matter. The basic Gnostic story, which varied in details from teacher to teacher, was this: In the beginning there was an unknowable, immaterial, and invisible God, sometimes called the Father of All and sometimes by other names. “He” was neither male nor female, and was composed of an implicitly finite amount of a living nonphysical substance. Surrounding this God was a great empty region called the Pleroma (the fullness). Beyond the Pleroma lay empty space. The God acted to fill the Pleroma through a series of emanations, a squeezing off of small portions of his/its nonphysical energetic divine material. In most accounts there are thirty emanations in fifteen complementary pairs, each getting slightly less of the divine material and therefore being slightly weaker. The emanations are called Aeons (eternities) and are mostly named personifications in Greek of abstract ideas. -
Nursing in Japanese American Incarceration Camps, 1942-1945
Nursing in Japanese American Incarceration Camps, 1942-1945 Rebecca Ann Coffin Staunton, Virginia BSN, Georgetown University, 1989 MSN, St. Joseph’s College of Maine, 2008 A Dissertation presented to the Graduate Faculty of the University of Virginia in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Nursing University of Virginia May, 2016 © Copyright by Rebecca A. Coffin All Rights Reserved May 2016 i Abstract Japanese Americans living in west coast states had been a marginalized group long before the attack against Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on December 7, 1941 by the Empire of Japan, which accelerated the maelstrom of hysteria and hatred against them. As a result, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9066, authorizing Secretary of War Stimson and designated military commanders to prescribe military areas from which any or all persons could be excluded. United States military leaders identified all Japanese Americans in the western portions of Washington, Oregon, and California as potential subversive persons that might rise up and sabotage the United States from within its borders. Over 110,000 Japanese Americans were forcibly removed from their homes and transported to one of ten incarceration camps until their loyalty to the United States could be determined. Roosevelt’s Executive Order 9102 established the War Relocation Authority on March 18, 1942. This civilian agency provided for the shelter, nutrition, education, and medical care of the excluded Japanese Americans as they waited to be redistributed within the interior and eastern United States. Previous literature describing the medical care furnished to the Japanese Americans in the camps concentrated on early system problems related to supplies and sanitation efforts. -

Designed and edited by Ash Staunton Center cover image used with permission from Rino Di Stefano, ‘The Zanfretta Case: Chronicle of an Incredible True Story.’ 3 ~ In memory of Frederick Valentich. ~ (1958 - ?) 4 Introduction My hope is that this information will be useful for future generations, be it for entertainment or any other purpose, just hopefully useful. Something strange has been happening, perhaps for thousands of years, mostly ignored, covered up, debunked, but it still happens. Every day someone becomes part of the mystery. ‘Others’ amongst us are reaching out to us, be it from outer space, other dimensions, other realms, etc. Beware, some might not have the best intentions. But I feel this is a necessary process for our species to make that giant leap forward and become the Universal citizens that we were meant to be. 1975 was the year of the high profile Walton abduction and of SAC base intrusions. It was also a year of unrelenting humanoid activity and encounters almost at a worldwide scale. The United States was in the midst of an epidemic of mysterious and bizarre cattle mutilations. It remained the focus of activity as far as humanoid encounters. The same states reporting the cattle mutilations reported humanoid encounters.
