The primary argument is that while beliefs about death stemmed from the Reformation tradition, divergent religious reforms of Puritanism and Arminianism did not lead to differing approaches to death. People adapted religious ideas on general terms of Protestant Christianity and not specifically aligned with varying reform movements. This study links apologetics and sermons concerning spiritual death, physical death, and remedies for each to cultural practice through the lens of wills and graves to gauge religious influence. Readers are reminded of the origins of reformed thought, which is what seventeenth-century English theologians built their ideas upon. Religious debates of the day centered on the Puritan and Arminian divide, which contained significantly different ideas of soteriology, a key aspect of a good death in the English ars moriendi. Puritans and Arminians regarded each other as political and religious enemies, yet their theology and teachings reveal the same understanding to the end of life and afterlife. Interestingly, people approached death identifying their common faith as Christians, not divided into different religious groups. Individuals heeded preachers’ advice to recognize mortality and prepare for death in advance of the deathbed. Guidance from theologians emphasized hope and expectation of a blessed death through reliance on God and His promises. iii This dissertation contributes to narrowing a gap in the scholarship on late seventeenth-century English history and is also a work in thanatology that assesses how humanity has dealt with death. This research especially considers wills as a primary source to evaluate how society faced mortality and Christian teachings shaped conventional thought. The evidence also reveals an increasing value placed on family. Finally, this dissertation is a reminder that assessing the personal topic of death and dying is a unique way to increase understanding of human nature as death is approached. This is a study of the humanities that deals with life’s meaning, mortality, identity and cultural change at one of the most crucial of the life cycles - death. iv DEDICATION For my dearly loved ones Bettina, Ethan, Elena, Bobbie Marie and Gili v ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Researching and writing this dissertation has been quite an undertaking. The School’s funding enabled me to access much needed archives and kept the project moving forward at a good pace. The staff at the British Library and London Metropolitan Archives were most welcoming of a rain-soaked, unsure traveler and offered excellent tips to maximize my research time. Family is a lot of things, and family saw me though this to the end. They acted interested in my endeavors even when they seemed a bit out there, like with my constant pondering over what early modern English interpretations of irresistible grace or freely accepted soteriological solutions were, whether or not they really impacted death, and what this all means to us now. My parents Paul and Natasha and Aunt Tamara, in particular, kept me on task as this unfolded, while their love was ever-present. They will never know how much it meant. My many other siblings, in-laws and friends gave support in just the right ways at just the right times.     Dissenters' Schools, 1660-1820. HE contributions of nonconformity to education have seldom been recognized. Even historians of dissent T have rarely done more than mention the academies, and speak of them as though they existed chiefly to train ministers, which was but a very; small part o:f their function, almost incidental. Tbis side of the work, the tecbnical, has again been emphasized lately by Dr. Shaw in the " Cambridge History of Modern Literature," and by Miss Parker in her " Dissenting Academies in England ": it needs tberefore no further mention. A 'brief study of the wider contribution of dissent, charity schools, clay schools, boarding schools, has been laid before the members of our Society. An imperfect skeleton, naming and dating some of the schoolmasters, may be pieced together here. It makes no 'P'r·et·ence to be exhaustive; but it deliberately: excludes tutors who were entirely engaged in the work of pre­ paring men for the ministry, so as to illustrate the great work clone in general education. It incorporates an analysis of the. I 66 5 returns to the Bishop of Exeter, of IVIurch's history of the Presbyterian and General Baptist Churches in the West, of Nightingale's history of Lancashire Nonconformity (marked N), of Wilson's history of dissenting churches in and near London. The counties of Devon, Lancaste.r, and Middlesex therefore are well represented, and probably an analysis of any county dissenting history would reveal as good work being done in every rplace. A single date marks the closing of the school. Details about many will be found in the Transactions of the Congregational Historical Society, to which references are given.

    Today we have this powerful story of the raising of the widow’s son from the dead. We know there are a couple of other examples in the Scriptures of Jesus raising people from the dead. Of course, the story of the raising of Lazarus and the story of the raising of the daughter of Jairus. But this raising story, you’ll notice, is a little different. In this story no one is asking Jesus for help. For Lazarus, Martha says “If you had been here, my brother would not have died.” Jairus says, “My daughter is at the point of death. Please, come lay your hands on her that she may get well and live.” Jesus sets on His own initiative and in this we see His great compassion. Let’s look at the scene a little closer. The one who died was the only son of a widow. So she was alone. Her husband had died, and now her only son had died, so she has the terrible grief of losing her son after already having lost her husband. She has the prospect now of being alone, and on top of this, in those days women didn’t really work for income. So now she has to be completely dependent on the charity of others to live. Maybe she now would even have to be reduced to begging. The Lord sees all this going on. The exact scripture we heard was: “When the Lord saw her, He was moved with pity for her.” So we see the Lord’s great compassion here.

It is scary fundamentally because "spiritual" signals the deepest/highest dimension of our lives, where most--indeed, everything--is at risk as we face the "Mysterium tremendum et fascinosum" ("the Mystery that causes us to tremble, but so fascinates us we can't run away"). And of all life-events, none other can compare with death in grabbing our attention for the "spiritual" dimension. No wonder the current flood of books on the death/spirituality relationship--many on Hospice chaplaincy.

    Sam Storms Bridgeway Church / Foundations The End Times (1) The End Times Our Hope & God’s Promise Part One Individual Eschatology: Death, the Intermediate State, Resurrection, and Judgment (“Let us consider this settled,” said Calvin, “that no one has made progress in the school of Christ who does not joyfully await the day of death and final resurrection” [Institutes, 3.10.5].) Biblical eschatology is a vast field of study encompassing far more than merely “end-time” events, or what we customarily speak of as “prophecy”. Also included within the discipline of eschatology is the destiny of the individual, most often conceived as entailing 4 phases or experiences: (1) physical death, (2) the intermediate state, (3) the bodily resurrection, and (4) the judgment of the believer. Physical Death The word “death” is used in Scripture to describe three experiences: (1) spiritual death, or the separation or alienation of the individual soul from God (cf. Gen. 2:17; 3:3,8-9; Eph. 2:1,5); (2) eternal death or second death, which is the culmination or eternal continuation of spiritual death (cf. Rev. 2:11; 20:6,14; 21:8); and (3) physical death which is the temporary separation of the material and immaterial aspects of the human constitution (cf. Gen. 35:18; James 2:26; Phil. 1:21-24; 2 Cor. 5:1-8, I Cor. 15:35-58). Insofar as this study concerns the destiny of individual Christians, those who have been saved from spiritual death, we will focus only on (3) physical death. The Character and Cause of Physical Death The character of physical death, or, what is it? • The absence of clinically detectable signs such as the heart stopping and the decrease of blood pressure and body temperature? • The absence of brain wave activity? • The irreversible loss of vital functions? • The Scriptures answer the question spiritually, not clinically.

    4 WHAT IS NATIONAL BIOGRAPHY FOR? DICTIONARIES AND DIGITAL HISTORY PHILIP CARTER Ask the purpose of national biography and you may be forgiven for thinking this an easier question for previous generations to answer. In June 1900 the original British Dictionary of National Biography (DNB) reached its completion with the publication of a 63rd and final volume— an event hailed as a triumph by reviewers and compilers alike. For the Pall Mall Gazette, this was ‘the best dictionary of home biography possessed of any nation’, while the Athenaeum championed ‘our British lexicographers’ who ‘have had the satisfaction of administering a handsome beating to their most formidable rivals, the Germans’.1 The DNB’s editor at the time was the Elizabethan literary scholar Sidney Lee, who had driven the project on during the 1890s and infused it with an enhanced degree of scholarly rigour. This essay presents a critical overview of recent literature in English on the modern cultural history of death. In order to locate new developments, it charts the evolution of the field from the 1970s until today and distinguishes between French and Anglophone strands in the historiography. A selection of studies published between 2005 and 2015 exemplifies a revival in recent scholarship that hangs on four main innovations: the abandonment of grand narratives of modernization and secularization; an interdisciplinary integration of political, cultural, and intellectual history; greater attention to the individual; and the expansion of the field beyond Europe and North America. Thus, today the history of death is both local and global, public and private, personal and universal. Everyone dies, but dying too has a history. Although death is universal and timeless, the way in which it is thought of, and dealt with, varies in time and place. Being by their nature bound to tradition, the rites of death evolve at a relatively slow pace and can be easy to grasp. They are also tied to morality, memory, religion, and kinship, and to issues of origin and destiny that lie at the root of our definitions of civilization. Thus, the history of death presents an opportunity to explore what it means to be human – an opportunity that historians have approached from different viewpoints.

Kent Clark California Institute of Technology ABSTRACT This working paper is a draft of the first three chapters of a biography of Thomas, 5th Baron, 1st Earl, and 1st Marquess of Wharton (1648-1715). It traces the development of young Thomas (Tom to his family and eventually to the political world of England) from his birth until his return from France in 1666. The reader may be relieved to know that the formidable array of genealogical notes in Chapter I will eventually be reduced into an appendix on the Wharton family and that the table of abbreviations covers the whole book, not merely the first three chapters. Some of the notes, it should be added, are made necessary by the vast amount of misinformation that has accreted around the Whartons. Nice people will not bother to read them. 11 ABBREVIA TIONS 1.
