A. That the City Council designate the unnumbered location situated one sidewalk square southerly of and between numbered locations 70G and 71g as shown on Sheet 17 of Plan D-13788 for the Hollywood Walk of Fame for the installation of the name of at 6764 Hollywood Boulevard.

DISCUSSION:

The Walk of Fame Committee of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has submitted a request for insertion into the Hollywood Walk of Fame the name of Rick Baker. The ceremony is scheduled for Friday, November 30, 2012 at 11:30 a.m.

The communicant's request is in accordance with City Council action of October 18, 1978, under Council File No. 78-3949. Following the Council's action of approval, and upon proper application and payment of the required fee, an installation permit can be secured at 201 N. Figueroa Street, 3rd Floor, Counter 23.

Martinez discussed the Walk of Fame Committee report. The slate of honorees as selected by the Walk of Fame committee for year 2013 are:

Motion by Goldman, seconded by Gallogly to approve the 2013 Walk of Fame honorees as provided by the Walk of Fame Committee. Motion carried.

Rick Baker has been an influential force in the creation of creatures and prosthetic makeup for over 40 years. Mentored early in his career by cinema makeup pioneer and innovator, Dick Smith, Baker honed his craft contributing to films such as The Exorcist, Live and Let Die, and television's The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman, for which Baker won an Emmy, As his reputation grew within the Hollywood community, he pushed the boundaries of traditional makeup effects by transforming David Naughton into a four-legged, ferocious werewolf in An American Werewolf in London. Rick's ingenious use of prosthetics and puppet effects won him an Academy Award for Outstanding Achievement in Makeup the debut year of the category.

Garnering a reputation for excellence and resourcefulness, Rick's assignments became a diverse and iconic collection of creatures including Harry and the Hendersons, Michael Jackson IS Thriller, Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan,Lord of the Apes, Gorillas in the Mist, Coming to America, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, Men in Black, The Nutty Professor, Mighty Joe Young, and How The Grinch Stole Christmas to "namebut a few. In the year 2011, Rick won his seventh Academy Award for his contributions transforming Benicia Del Toro and Sir Anthony Hopkins into werewolves for The Wolfman. He recently supplied a new population of aliens for Barry Sonnenfeld's Men in Black III.
