    Katherine Kinney Cold Wars: Black Soldiers in Liberal Hollywood n 1982 Louis Gossett, Jr was awarded the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Gunnery Sergeant Foley in An Officer and a Gentleman, becoming theI first African American actor to win an Oscar since Sidney Poitier. In 1989, Denzel Washington became the second to win, again in a supporting role, for Glory. It is perhaps more than coincidental that both award winning roles were soldiers. At once assimilationist and militant, the black soldier apparently escapes the Hollywood history Donald Bogle has named, “Coons, Toms, Bucks, and Mammies” or the more recent litany of cops and criminals. From the liberal consensus of WWII, to the ideological ruptures of Vietnam, and the reconstruction of the image of the military in the Reagan-Bush era, the black soldier has assumed an increasingly prominent role, ironically maintaining Hollywood’s liberal credentials and its preeminence in producing a national mythos. This largely static evolution can be traced from landmark films of WWII and post-War liberal Hollywood: Bataan (1943) and Home of the Brave (1949), through the career of actor James Edwards in the 1950’s, and to the more politically contested Vietnam War films of the 1980’s. Since WWII, the black soldier has held a crucial, but little noted, position in the battles over Hollywood representations of African American men.1 The soldier’s role is conspicuous in the way it places African American men explicitly within a nationalist and a nationaliz- ing context: U.S. history and Hollywood’s narrative of assimilation, the combat film.

Ryan May 2021 Examining Committee Members: Jan Fernback, Advisory Chair, Media and Communication Nancy Morris, Media and Communication Fabienne Darling-Wolf, Media and Communication Ron Becker, External Member, Miami University ABSTRACT This study considers the case of representation of transgender people and issues on American fictional television from 2004 to 2014, a period which represents a steady surge in transgender television characters relative to what came before, and prefigures a more recent burgeoning of transgender characters since 2014. The study thus positions the period of analysis as an historical period in the changing representation of transgender characters. A discourse analysis is employed that not only assesses the way that transgender characters have been represented, but contextualizes American fictional television depictions of transgender people within the broader sociopolitical landscape in which those depictions have emerged and which they likely inform. He wrote, “finally, something decent to cover.” The email came from Spinnerette , and it announced a new EP they were independently releasing, entitled Ghetto Love . We’ve been following Spinnerette on Antiquiet, starting with a retro review of the last Distillers album, through an appearance with Queens Of The Stone Age and Spinnerette’s first shows in October. I share the complaint behind Johnny’s statement- while all the hipsters are finding so much music to love these days, it all sounds like shit to us. We’ve had to resort to pot shots at fucking Fall Out Boy for fuck’s sake. But there’s this little EP, and another one from Cat Power that’s worth checking out. Ghetto Love is only four songs- Ghetto Love, Valium Knights, Distorting A Code, and Bury My Heart , all of which have been heard online and/or live. But the first two tracks are pretty hot. Bury My Heart is alright, while Distorting A Code is our least favorite. Check out the video for Ghetto Love: If you dig that, the complete EP can be heard and/or purchased here from Topspin (why it isn’t on iTunes, we do not know), bundled along with the Ghetto Love video. UPDATE: We forgot to mention- at their last show, Brody promised the full length album would arrive in February ’09.
