-395- CONTROLLED ATMOSPHERE STORAGE CONDITIONS FOR SOME OF THE MORE COMMONLY GROWN APPLE CULTIVARS M. Meheriuk Agriculture Canada Research Station Summerland, British Columbia VOH 1Z0 Canada This paper will attempt to outline controlled atmosphere (CA) conditions suitable for some of the predominant apple cultivars. Storage personnel were contacted at apple research centers throughout the world and asked about CA storage conditions employed in their area or country. The information received from these individuals as well as that from the literature was used in establishing storage conditions suitable for specific apple cultivars. Also included on the information sheets are the benefits and disadvantages in altering the concentrations of C02 and 02, the problems encountered when injurious levels of either gas are used, and the commercial use of reduced 02 or increased C02 in the storage atmosphere. Somewhat different from that found in other areas was the use of unscrubbed atmospheres and higher storage temperatures in European storage facilities. An unscrubbed atmosphere is one in which the C02 content is controlled (5-10%) but not the 02 level. Higher C02 levels are known to have an inhibitory effect on softening. The higher storage temperatures may reflect higher energy costs in European countries but it has also been suggested that they permit higher C02 levels in the storage atmosphere. Perhaps another reason for higher storage temperatures is a lower incidence of internal disorders prevalent in many of the European grown apples. A trend towards lower oxygen 02 levels has taken place in the past few years. Many countries now recommend 2% 02 to improve firmness retention and reduce development of physiological disorders. -

NW MICHIGAN APPLE MATURITY REPORT #6 September 29, 2010 General Comments - This year the NWMHRS will be testing apples for maturity. Results will be sent via fax and email to past apple maturity list subscribers. The maturity newsletter is updated weekly on Wednesdays. If you have not received this information in the past and wish to subscribe to the list, please contact the NWMHRS (946- 1510 or [email protected] ). If you are interested in having your fruit tested, drop off a 10 to 12 apple sample at the NW Station on Mondays, if possible. The fruit should be picked randomly from the outside portion of the trees and should be large in size and free of blemishes with the stem attached. August and September rainfall and a light crop are helping to make nice size fruit. Cool evenings and sunny days are helping with coloring and maturation. Many blocks have fruit showing frost marks. McIntosh - Harvest finished. HoneyCrisp - Harvest finished. Gala - Harvest finished. Golden Delicious - Approaching mature (2 samples). Firmness is 17.4 lbs., down from 18.3 lbs. last week. Starch index is 2.2, up from 1.3 and brix levels are at 15.2, up from 13.9 last week. Background color is beginning to lighten in most blocks with a blush covering up to 20% of each fruit. Jonagold - Mature (2 samples). Firmness is at 16.9 lbs., down from 17.4 lbs. Starch index is at 4.5, up from 1.9 last week and brix levels are at 15.9. -

We can judge that apple only by the wild apples that grow today in the area between tlie Caspian Sea and Europe, which is believed to be the original habitat of the apple. These apples are generally onl>r 1 to 2 inches in diameter, are acici and astringent, and are far inferior io the choice modern horticultural varieties. The improvement of the apple through tlie selection of the best types of the wild seedlings goes far baclv to the very beginning of history. Methods of budding and grafting fiiiits were Icnown more than 2,000 years ago. According to linger, C^ato (third century, B. C.) knew seven different apple varieties, l^liny (first centiuy, A. D.) knew^ 36 different kinds. By tlie time the iirst settlers froni Europe were coming to the sliores of North America., himdreds of apple varieties had been named in European <M)unt]*ies, The superior varieties grown in l^^urope in the seventeenth century had, so far as is known, all developed as chance seedlings, but garden- ers had selected the best of the s(>edling trees îvnd propagated them vegetatively.
