Prior to being named to her current position, she served in poses associated with human rights and policies and also caught at universities in Mexico. When she spoke at Tufts' Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy last year, her sense of humor came to the fore. She defined a diplomat as "someone who for the first twenty years writes reports but doesn't sign chem, and who for che second twenty years signs reporcs but does not write chem." Green earned a bachelor's degree in from the Universidad Nacional Auconoma de Mexico and lacer earned master's degrees in economics from both El Colegio de Mexico and . Since 1968, she has been a professor at El Colegio de Mexico, where she has caught courses on international economics. 5 DAVID HALBERSTAM'S books have explored the inner workings of America's policies, media, and sports, illuminating such topics as rowing, the Civil Rights movement, basketball, and the fifties. His rwo best-known works have become household phrases: The Best and the Brightest is an examination of America's entry into the Vietnam War, while The Powers That Be is a compre hensive study of CBS, the Washington Post, Time, Inc., and the Los Angeles Times. His work is known for its scholarship and eye for detail. Reviewers have praised Halberstam for his exhaustive research. He once cold a reporter, "What I like co chink about myself is chat I work harder than people who are smarter and chat I'm smarter than people who work harder. . . . " Bue it is his skill as a storyteller chat has brought him legions of fans. The Globe described The Best and the Brightest as "the Iliad of the American empire and the Odyssey of chis nation's search for its idealistic soul. The Best and the Brightest is almost like watching an Alfred Hitchcock thriller." Halberstam was born in City on April I 0, 1934, the son of Charles A. Halberstam, who graduated from Tufts School of Medicine in 1925, and Blanche Levy Halberstam, a teacher who grew up in the Roxbury section of Boston and graduated from Simmons College. During World War II, his family moved a great deal, from New York co Connecticut to Texas to Minnesota. "le was difficult going co a new school all the time," he cold an interviewer in 1993, "but it also gave you a sense of the size of the country, and it allowed me, when I finally graduated from college and went on co journalism, co be more fearless and more adventurous in the assignments I cook on." Halberstam graduated in 1955 from , where he was managing editor of the Harvard Crimson. le was a year after Brown v. Board of Education, and he decided chat instead of caking a job in Washington or New York, he would undertake a self-imposed journalism apprenticeship in the Deep South. He joined the staff of a small West Point, Mississippi newspaper, the West Point Daily Times Leader. He earned $46 a week, $45 plus a dollar extra because he covered the local Kiwanis club. It was, he said, "the greatest experience, probably, of my life ... I learned a lot. I learned how co deal with ordinary people, co listen to them, to see the value in people who didn't agree with the same things I did and how they worked, what their lives were." From there he went to the Nashville Tennessean, where he spent four years as a reporter. "I knew I wasn't a good leg man," he said, "so I figured our who the good reporters on the Tennessean were, and I just watched them every day. Every night I went out co dinner with chem, and I'd say, 'How did you do chat?' When I got our of there after char apprenticeship, I was a really good reporter. I mean, everything had come cogerher for me." In 1960 he joined as a staff writer. For the next seven years he was a foreign correspondent for the Times, covering the Congo (now Zaire) from 1961 co 1962, Vietnam from 1962 co I 963, Warsaw in 1965, and Paris in 1966. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1964 for his reporting on Vietnam. " I was probably the best known of a very small group of American reporters who did nor accept rhe official optimism of the American government," he said. Returning co New York in 1967, Halberstam became a contributing editor co Harper 's magazine, remaining in chat position until 1971 , when he decided co write books full rime. The author of sixteen books, Halberstam is most fond of The Children, a portrait of eight idealistic African-American students deeply involved in the Civil Rights movement. "I like The Children the most because it is about the nobility of ordinary people," Halberstam said. "Ir is a book about courage and faith during a time char I chink was the most luminescent moment in American democracy since World War II." On April 28, the Robert F. Kennedy Book Award program named Halberstam a Distinguished Honor winner for The Children.

6 A sports fan since he was a child, his most recent book is about basketball great Michael Jordan. Of the writing life he has chosen, he said, "Ir's a privileged life, writing books. There's a wonderful level of engagement with society.... "It sometimes rakes four or five years to write a book, like going to a university. You enter a door one day, and then four years later, you come out, and you've got your intellectual degree and you've learned so much." Halberstam will receive an honorary doctor of humane letters degree.

MARIAN L. HEARD, president and chief executive officer of United Way of Massachusetts Bay, has been dedicated to volunteer service across America throughout most of her life. A friend of presidents as well as the poor, Heard has received numerous awards and accolades while working each day to ensure chat more than two million at-risk youths receive support services. Born in Canton, Georgia, she began her career as a secretary, having received an associate's degree in executive secretarial studies from the University of Bridgeport, Junior College of Connecticut, in 1963. She received a B.A. in business and management from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst (1976) and an M.Ed. in community leadership and development from (1978). Before becoming affiliated with United Way, Heard worked as the executive director of Inner-City Children's Center, as an instructor at Housatonic Community College, and as a radio show moderator in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Beginning in 1974, Heard worked for United Way of Eastern Fairfield County in Bridge port, and served as president and chief executive officer from 1989 to 1992. When she became president and CEO of the United Way of Massachusetts Bay in February 1992, it marked rhe first time in the organization's history that a woman or a person of color had assumed the executive role. Under her leadership, the United Way of Massachusetts Bay has adopted a new strategic focus, concentrating on prevention, rather than late intervention, to assist children, families, and communities in meeting their own needs. An example of chis philosophy is the "Success by 6" initiative, which promotes public policies to ensure that every child enters school healthy and ready to succeed by age six. Heard also has been involved in rhe United Way of America and has served as founding president and chief executive officer of Washington, D.C.'s Points of Light Foundation-the independent, nonprofit organization launched in 1990 and chaired by President George Bush that strives to promote volunteerism and engage more people in community service. Additionally, Heard has been a director of Michael Jackson's Heal the World Foundation, the Massachusetts board of Blue Cross and Blue Shield, and Fleer Financial Group. as well as the Liberty Murual Group. She also has been affiliated with the American Management Association, rhe Executive Women's Group, the National Business and Professional Women's Club, and Women in . In April 1997, after Heard served as the chief executive officer of the steering committee for President Clinton's Summit for America's Future, she was asked about her own aspirations for higher office. She replied, "I am a person who is very respectful of the process, but i am also a person who is very impatient for results. I think I gee more immediate results right here at the United Way. " Heard has received many important awards throughout her career, including eight honorary degrees. She received the Big Sisters Association of 's Women of Achievement Award (1991), the Buckley Orator Award (1993), and the United Way of America's John H.

7 Garber, Jr., Minority Development Award (1988).In addition, she has received the

Women's Leadership Award in the human services category, the American Society for Public Administration's Distinguished Public Citizen Award, and rhe Medal of Hope Award, presented

by the Organization for a New Equality, for her work with children. In 1998, Heard received the Massachuserrs Public Citizen of the Year Award and was also . chosen as the National Public Citizen of the Year by the National Association of Social Workers for her tireless efforts on behalf of children. Regarding the work she has done for the United Way of Massachuserrs Bay, Heard has said, "When I put my head on a pillow for the last rime, and someone says in a soft voice, 'What did you do with your life?' I want to be able to say I changed the life of a least one person .... l always got good marks in school, bur I have always said that I also want good marks in heaven." Tufts will award Heard an honorary doctor of public policy degree.

DAVID DA-I HO is a research physician and microbiologist whose pioneering and controversial work on AIDS has drawn international acclaim. Ho is the director of the Aaron Diamond AIDS

Research Center in New York City, where several years ago he developed a daring strategy for effectively controlling HIV by using powerful drugs called protease inhibitors in combination with standard antiviral medications. Unlike most doctors, he gives this combination therapy to patients in the first few weeks of infection. The technique has successfully dropped the HIV in his rest patients' blood to unmeasurable levels. Ho's work has provided the first concrete evidence that HIV is nor insur mountable. In the process, he and his team of researchers have fundamentally changed the way

scientists think about the AIDS virus. With such a treatment strategy, AIDS mortality in the has decreased fivefold in the past few years. Born in Taiwan in 1952, Ho was named Da-I, which means "Grear One." His father was an engineer who served during World War II as a translator for_American troops in China. When Ho was six, his father left for America to advance his career, but left Da-I and a younger brother in Taiwan with their mother. Ho was twelve years old when his father sent for the family. They Aew to Los Angeles and

lived near the University of Southern California, where his father was earning a master's degree in engineering. A devour Christian who had taken the name Paul, the elder Ho picked his sons' names, David and Phillip, from the Bible. Ho attended the Massachuserrs Institute of Technology and then California Technological Institute, majoring in physics. He grew attracted to the field of molecular biology, however, and subsequently enrolled at Harvard medical school. Ir was while serving as a medical resident at UCLA School of Medicine in Los Angeles in 1981 that he saw some of the earliest HIV-infected patients in intensive care units. He was among the first doctors to suspect a virus, and he soon decided to specialize in research in that area. Among Ho's most important scientific discoveries is what traditionally has been considered the "dormant" period in the HIV and AIDS life cycle-the first three to ten years after infection when no symptoms appear.Th ar period is actually a time of intense warfare inside the parient's body. Hundreds of billions of HIV particles are made and cleared each day in association with massive destruction of certain immune cells. This discovery helped shift the focus of AIDS research from treating hopeless late stages of infection to rhe critical early srages. In 1990, when philanthropist Irene Diamond decided to start an AIDS research center in New York, she chose Ho, then thirty-seven years old and a relative unknown to the lay world, as its director."I don't want a star. I want a wonderful scientist," Diamond told skeptics. Ir was here

8 char Ho would be able to develop his groundbreaking strategy, which he announced at the Eleventh Internacional AIDS Conference in Vancouver in 1996. Ho's proposal char his treatment had the potential co eliminate the AIDS virus in infected patients was bold and seemed to offer some hope of an end to the years of battle against the disease. Yet some scientists still consider his methods a gamble. The timing of the start of treatment is critical and requires extremely early detection of the infection. Even with early detection, the massive drug doses required over a period of years can cause many side effects and are very expensive. Ho himself admits that there is no guarantee that his strategy can totally eliminate the HIV virus. His hope is to hold back, if not totally vanquish, the virus. "I think there is some hope that AIDS could be cured and that HIV could be eradicated from an infected person," he says. "But I am much more optimistic about controlling HIV so that the virus is stopped from doing damage to the immune system and so that you could sustain the longevity of the patient for not just a few years but for decades. That's a realistic objective." Ho has been a contributing author to more than 250 professional journal articles and has received numerous honors for his work in the battle against AIDS. These include the Ernst Jung Prize for Medicine, the New York City Mayor's Award for Excellence in Science and Technology, and election to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Science and to Academia Sinica. In 1996, Ho was named Time magazine's Man of the Year. Ho will receive an honorary doctor of science degree.

THOMAS SCHMIDHEINY is chairman and CEO of "Holderbank," the largest cement company in the world and a leading supplier of building materials on five continents and in more than sixty nations. The Schmidheiny name is a household word in Switzerland, as generations of the family have built from modest origins a company and a commitment to community that are impressive both for their success and wide-ranging influence. "Holderbank" was founded in 1912 and is named for the village in the Swiss Canton of Aargau in which it resides. In 1921, Ernst Schmidheiny, Thomas's grandfather, became manag ing director of the company. Thomas Schmidheiny joined the company in 1967, learning about the business from the bottom up. He worked at one of his company's plants in Missouri and managed a plant in Mexico. After returning to Switzerland, he became CEO of the Swiss "Holderbank" interest and had to lead his company out of a cartel into a market-oriented unit. He rose to the position of chairman of the Excom of "Holderbank" in 1978, and after his father, Max, stepped down, he became chairman of the board in 1984. Early in his life he embraced the principles of responsibility and stewardship by which he continues to make both personal and professional decisions. On Wednesdays, when most Swiss children had the afternoons free , young Schmidheiny worked for five cents an hour in the family vineyard. After receiving a master's degree in mechanical engineering at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, he earned an M.B.A. at the University of Lausanne. Under his leadership, "Holderbank" has continued to carry out plans for growth and expansion that his predecessors discovered were necessary for the company to prosper. Sensing that the domestic market was finite, the company in the 1920s began investing in cement businesses in other European countries. Investments in the Middle East (Lebanon and Egypt) and then in South Africa followed, as did a subsequent network of holdings in North and America and in the Asian Pacific region.

9 Schmidheiny has overseen the further expansion of this unique cement-industry network and has based "Holderbank's" global presence on a balanced mix of companies from indus trialized nations and emerging markers. In 1998, two major acquisitions were made in the Philippines and Thailand. Throughout it all, Schmidheiny and "Holderbank" have adhered to strict environmental guidelines and have established a global reputation for "green" business practices. The company is a cosignatory of the Business Charter for Sustainable Development of the International Chamber of Commerce and highlighted its commitment by publishing an environmental mis sion statement in an annual report earlier chis decade. Schmidheiny has taken pride in applying abstract environmental principles to real-world business practices. One of "Holderbank's" goals is to generate 50 percent of its needed fuel from alternative fuels, to reduce emissions, and to undertake massive tree plantings to reoxygenate rhe atmosphere. Schmidheiny also has demonstrated a strong commitment to education. President Nelson Mandela has recognized his involvement in a joint venture to provide vocational training in South Africa. "Holderbank" has a generous employee-training and education program, and Schmidheiny himself has lectured at universities throughout the world, mainly to urge young people to be more involved in public life. He participates on the boards of many organizations, including Credit Suisse and SwissAir, for which he is deputy chairman. Described as modest and unassuming, Schmidheiny is well respected in the business field. "Holderbank" has been called "a class act" by Forbes magazine and the most respected construction and home-building materials company in the world by London's Financial Times. In his spare rime, Schmidheiny oversees his art collection as well as his Cuvaison Winery in California. Tufts will award Schmidheiny an honorary doctor of business administration degree.

10 ONE BUILDING, FOUR PROFESSORS, SEVEN STUDENTS.

Random Notes about Tufts and Its Commencement Exercises Tufts C0llege opened its doors in 1854 under the modest but courageous leadership of Hosea Ballou 2d. Hesitant as co his fitness for the presidency, he wrote co his brother Levi: "Bue I shut my eyes co che consequences, and rush forward ... I am in for ic, and if I come our ground co powder, I hope ic will bring che price of flour down." The distinguished Ballou and his successors wrought well, however, for Tufts College has grown from its original complement of "o ne building, four professors, seven students" into a university with a full-time faculty and staff of over 2,600 and student enrollment of 8,700. The climax of che academic year has traditionally been a public Commencement, which for many years was scheduled for che second Wednesday in July. The first Commencement ac which degrees were conferred cook place on July 8, 1857, when three candidates were graduated. In chose days studenrs were assigned Commencement pares in accordance with their class rank, and appropriate addresses were delivered in Larin. Unril 1879, che degree candidates were listed alphabetically. Unril 1875, che morning Commencement exercises were followed by a formal program in che afternoon under che auspices of che leading undergraduate literary and debating club. In 1875, che afternoon program was conducted by che Association of Alumni and marked cheir increasing interest in che affairs of their Alma Macer. Primed circulars of che first Com mencement were senr co all Universalise pastors co read co their congregations and special notice was given rhac ladies were invited co all of che festivities.

Since chat auspicious day in July 1857, Tufts has conferred 113,206 earned degrees. The Medical School was opened in 1893, and che first graduating class consisted of rwenty-rwo students, including eight women. Since then, it has conferred 11,096 M.D. degrees. The Boston Deneal College was incorporated inro Tufts in 1899, and all graduates after chis union received che of Deneal Medicine from Tufts instead of che degree of Doctor of Deneal Surgery. Thus, Tufts became one of only three dental schools in che United Scares co award che D.M.D. instead of che D .D .S. as che degree for general practitioners of denriscry. The Tufts University School of Deneal Medicine has conferred 9,434 D.M.D. degrees. The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy opened its doors in 1933 co rwenty-one students, all college or university graduates. In 1935, fourteen students received che Master of Ans degree and ac che same Commencement che first Master of Arcs in Law and Diplomacy was awarded. Since 1935, The Fletcher School has conferred 2,866 Master of Arcs degrees, 2,872 Master of Arcs in Law and Diplomacy degrees, and 539 degrees. The School of Veterinary Medicine, founded in 1979, has conferred I 006• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees. le is New England's only veterinary school.

II The Sadder School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences was established in 1980 in cooperation with the schools of medicine, dental medicine, veterinary medicine, and the graduate schools of ans and sciences. Furthering Tufts' commitment to multidisciplinary health investigations, the Sadder School has conferred 264 degrees. The School of Nutrition Science and Policy began as the Graduate Department of Nutri tion in the College of Arts and Sciences in I 976. It began operation as a school in I 98 I. Since then, the school has conferred 385 degrees.

The Commencement Exercises Today the Tufts Commencement exercises open with an academic procession which brings all participants to the Green in front of , where the first Commencement was held. Candidates for degrees lead the procession, followed by members of the faculty, in order of seniority. Members of the administration, deans, trustees, and honorary degree recipients are ushered in by the Marshal of the 25-year Reunion Class of I 974, Evangeline Harris Stefanakis, to seats on the platform. Associate Professor of Classics, Peter LO. Reid, the Presenter, carrying the official mace, leads the final marcher, President John DiBiaggio.

Academic Regalia Traditional academic regalia has been worn by the Tufts faculty since the Commencement of 1906. The gown for the Bachelor's degree has pointed sleeves and is designed to be worn closed. The Master's gown has elbow-length, pointed sleeves; the Doctor's gown has bell shaped sleeves; both may be worn open or closed. The Doctor's gown is faced and the sleeves are trimmed with velvet. By its color and its arrangement, the hood worn with the gown indicates the wearer's highest advanced degree, the field in which it was awarded, and the school from which it came. The lining of the hood carries the school's colors, brown and blue in the case of Tufts. The velvet edging on the hood, wider for the Doctor's degree than for the Master's degree, signifies by its color the field in which the degree was designated. Master of Science and Doctor of Science hoods are trimmed in yellow; Engineers in orange; Medicine in green; Dental Medicine in lilac; and Doctor of Philosophy in blue. The mortar board or Oxford-type cap is the one usually worn, but of late, the soft cap which resembles an over-sized beret has come into favor because of its comfort. Tassels, other than the universally accepted black, may indicate by the various colors the field of learning in which the degree is earned, while the gold tassel generally signifies a doctoral degree. Many foreign universities show great diversity following traditions which extend back for centuries.

Although women applied to Tufts almost immedi ately after its founding in 1852, they were denied admission until the 1890s. With the founding of Jackson College for women in 1910, which was named for Cornelia Jackson, the benefactor who did the most to promote women's education at Tufts, women's education gained secur ity at the institution. '"_(o remem ber chat important change, we continue to place the name of Jackson College on the diplomas of women in Liberal Arts.
