See New Faces continued on page 13 A CHAIR STEPS DOWN On Thursday, April 26, 2007 a gathering was held in East Hall Lounge to thank Professor Virginia Drachman for her three years of outstanding service as Chair of the Department of History. In attendance were History Department students, staff and fac- ulty including emeritus faculty Howard Solomon and Pierre-Henri Laurent, as well as Professor Drachman’s daughter and Tufts alum, Eliza Drachman-Jones. Professor Drachman was a steady hand at the helm of the History Department and her tenure marked the addition of several talented faculty to the department including Professor Fernandez-Armesto and Professor Carp.     As the Harvard University, Boston Uni versity, and Tufts University chapters of the American Student Dental Association (ASDA), a student-run organization that represents the rights, interests and welfare of 22,000 dental students across the country, we urge you to change the requirements for initial dental licensure. Currently there are over 463 dental school graduates in Massachusetts that cannot get licensed. Dental students are required to take an exam that involves performing procedures on patients. As a result of dental school clinic closures due to COVID-19, students are unable to take the exam. We are asking you to change licensure requirements now to allow for the following exams to be accepted as new alternatives to current licensure requirements. • Dental Licensure Objective Structured Clinical Exam (DLOSCE). This exam will be released on June 15 and will be administered by the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (JCNDE). The DLOSCE is a high-stakes licensure examination consisting of multiple, standardized stations, each of which will require candidates to use their clinical skills to successfully complete one or more dental problem solving tasks without performing procedures on a patient. • American Board of Dental Examiners (ADEX) CompeDont DTX. It is a non-patient-based restorative examination that utilizes the CompeDont™ DTX, a new manikin tooth technology developed by the CDCA and Acadental, Inc. • Western Regional Examining Board (WREB) manikin simulation exam. • ASDA recommends the manikin-based alternatives are adopted in lieu of the patient based restorative and periodontal portions.     Adjunct Faculty are Uniting and Winning Like Never Before Tufts and Lesley University part-time faculty were the first in the Boston area to form a union with the Service Employees International Union. Only 2 years later, more than 3,000 faculty in Boston are united in SEIU -- including Northeastern University, Boston University and Bentley University. Tufts and Lesley part-time faculty have made dramatic progress in job stability, significant increases in per-course pay and new pathways for professional development. The Union Difference: Improvements in Pay, Benefits and Inclusion in the University Community The Tufts and Lesley contracts push back against trends in higher education that have marginalized a majority of America’s college and university instructors. Job Security Everyone will have at least one-year appointments at Tufts. By the end of the contract period, Tufts part-time lecturers with more than four years of service will be eligible for two-year appointments and those with more than eight years will be eligible for three-year contracts. Part-time lecturers will get first notice and fair consideration for full-time positions including a guaranteed interview. If the part-time faculty member isn’t offered the position, the instructor can find out why in a meeting with the dean or head of the department at Tufts. Adjunct faculty at Lesley who teach three courses per year over a four-year period will now receive two- year appointments. Fair Pay that Values Teaching At Tufts University ,pay per course for adjuncts will be raised 22-40% over the next three years, with a floor of $7,300 per course by September 2016.

    TUFTS UNIVERSITY EXPERIMENTAL COLLEGE FALL 2017 COURSES ExCollege Signature Courses: Taught by Visiting Lecturers EXP-0001-F Human Development in the Digital Age 1.0 credit, Letter-graded Wednesdays, 6:30-9:00pm Networked technologies are changing the way we play, learn, and grow. In this course we will focus on the experiences that new technologies and digital media provide children and adolescents and how these experiences might influence development. We will draw on theories of development as a conceptual framework for understanding how computing technologies interact with the life of a child and how children actively use technologies to meet their own goals. Our course is organized around the life of the child (infancy, early childhood, middle childhood, and adolescence) and we will play with (and design our own!) technologies and media for each stage of development. We will critically evaluate commercially available forms of technology, apps, and games for children, and discuss trends in the rising educational technology movement. Students will experience educational technology in museum and lab settings, meet with tech industry professionals, psychologists, and teachers, and enjoy the "hard fun" of playing and learning with technology. This is an interdisciplinary course, and students from all majors and backgrounds with a curiosity about EdTech and child development are welcome to enroll. Amanda Strawhacker (G '13) currently works with the DevTech Research Group where she has collaborated and coordinated for various National Science Foundation-funded projects. She is a research analyst focusing on designing, implementing, and evaluating developmentally appropriate technology for young children. Amanda earned her MA in Child Development at Tufts, concentrating in Children and New Technologies.
