    Press Release A Continuous Thread: Navajo Weaving Traditions Bruce Museum, Greenwich, Connecticut August 18 – November 25, 2018 Third Phase Navajo Chief’s Blanket. Bruce Museum Collection 68.25.05. GREENWICH, CT, July 11, 2018 – On August 18, 2018, the Bruce Museum will open A Continuous Thread: Navajo Weaving Traditions. This exhibition will trace the history of the Navajo weaving tradition from the earliest Mexican-inspired Saltillo serapes, c. 1880, to mid-20th century pictorial rugs. Featuring a dozen items from the Museum’s Native American ethnographic collection – some of which have never been publicly exhibited – the exhibition will be on display in the Bantle Lecture Gallery through November 25, 2018. Navajo rugs are unique because their warp (the vertical strings on a loom) is one, long continuous piece of wool thread. Once the warp is set on the loom, the size of the rug cannot be altered. This weaving method requires the weaver to plan the design and pattern of the rug to fit precisely into the predetermined length of the rug. The ability to conceive and execute two-dimensional designs in extraordinary patterns and colors set Navajo weavers apart from the creators of other Native rugs and blankets. Knowledge of this traditional process is an important cultural tradition that has been maintained through intergenerational instruction and mentoring despite the obstacles of displacement, discrimination and isolation experienced by the Navajo Nation. It was constructed in the Qajar Dynasty in 1876 by Lord Mirza Hasan Ali Nasir al Mulk. The mosque is known for its extensive use in colored glass in its façade. The construction of the mosque uses other traditional structural elements as well such as “panj kasehi” (five concaves). These days, the mosque is more of a tourist attraction than a place for prayer. Like all mosques in Iran, you must remove your shoes before entering and the floor is lined with Persian rugs from wall to wall. Bauhaus Transfers to Mandatory Palestine Introduction A “Bauhaus style” would be a setback to academic stagnation, into a state of inertia hostile to life, the combatting of which the Bauhaus was once founded. May the Bauhaus be saved from this death. Walter Gropius, 1930 The construction activities of the Jewish community in the British Mandate of Palestine represents a prominent paradigm for the spread of European avant-garde architecture. In the 1930s, there is likely no comparable example for the interaction of a similar variety of influences in such a confined space. The reception of architectural modernism – referred to as “Neues Bauen” in Germany – occurred in the context of a broad cultural transfer process, which had already begun in the wake of the waves of immigration (“Aliyot”) from Eu- rope at the end of the nineteenth century and had a formative effect within the emancipating Jewish community in Palestine (“Yishuv”). Among the growing number of immigrants who turned their backs on Europe with the rise of fas- cism and National Socialism were renowned intellectuals, artists, and archi- tects.
