Press Release A Continuous Thread: Navajo Weaving Traditions Bruce Museum, Greenwich, Connecticut August 18 – November 25, 2018 Third Phase Navajo Chief’s Blanket. Bruce Museum Collection 68.25.05. GREENWICH, CT, July 11, 2018 – On August 18, 2018, the Bruce Museum will open A Continuous Thread: Navajo Weaving Traditions. This exhibition will trace the history of the Navajo weaving tradition from the earliest Mexican-inspired Saltillo serapes, c. 1880, to mid-20th century pictorial rugs. Featuring a dozen items from the Museum’s Native American ethnographic collection – some of which have never been publicly exhibited – the exhibition will be on display in the Bantle Lecture Gallery through November 25, 2018. Navajo rugs are unique because their warp (the vertical strings on a loom) is one, long continuous piece of wool thread. Once the warp is set on the loom, the size of the rug cannot be altered. This weaving method requires the weaver to plan the design and pattern of the rug to fit precisely into the predetermined length of the rug. The ability to conceive and execute two-dimensional designs in extraordinary patterns and colors set Navajo weavers apart from the creators of other Native rugs and blankets. Knowledge of this traditional process is an important cultural tradition that has been maintained through intergenerational instruction and mentoring despite the obstacles of displacement, discrimination and isolation experienced by the Navajo Nation. WARP - The parallel threads running through the entire length of the rug onto which the knots are tied. B. WEFT - The threads running across the width of the rug inserted between all the rows of knots. These threads pass through alternate warp threads. Their job is to secure the knots in parallel lines and to strengthen the fabric. C. KNOT - The term used for a strand of wool yarn which is looped around two adjacent warp threads and then cut to form the pile (surface of carpet). D. OVERCASTING - A simple wrapping of dyed yarn along the entire length of both sides of a handmade rug. E. FRINGE - The visible continuation of the warp threads at both ends of the carpet. F. Local Disadvantages and the Weaver's Wage in the British Cotton Industry K.C.Jackson Department of Textile Industries, University of Leeds, Leeds, LS2 9JT. 1 Introduction A recent paper in " Ars Textrina" [ 1 ] provided an assessment of the Uni form List,1 which was the basis for determining the piece-rate earnings of weavers in most sectors of the British cotton industry from 1892, until it was gradually superseded following the Second World War. Although the List introduced rigidities in the labour market, nominally it had the advantage for operatives and employers alike, of discouraging under cutting of selling prices on the basis of wage cuts during periods of poor trade. However, this safeguard did not survive the severe pressures of the interwar years, as the legalisation of the List in 1935 testifies [2]. Un der more favorable trading conditions, the List also reduced the chances of disputes arising from wage differentials between mills and between districts. While the Uniform List provided a focus for collective wage bar gaining at industry level between the Amalgamated Weavers' Associ ation (AWA) and the Cotton Spinners and Manufacturers' Association (CSMA), it was not applied universally, since there were sectors of cot ton weaving for which its provisions were not appropriate. Magic Carpets – the Axminster story Magic Carpets-the Axminster story Introduction Up until the 18th century Age of Elegance, few people in this country would have set foot on a carpet. The fl oors of the homes of this Isle would have been made of beaten earth covered in rushes or straw threshings, fl agstones or wood. As late as 1751, a carpet was described as “a sort of covering to be spread on a table, trunk, an estrade (dais), or even a passage or fl oor”. In Scotland, in the latter part of the 18th century, a fl at reversible double-woollen fl oor cloth was becoming popular as a means of rendering the houses comfortable and as “a security against stone buildings, stone staircases and a cold climate”. “Kidderminster stuffs”, initially used as table cloths, were adapted in 1735 as a coarse double-weave cloth for fl ooring, but it was not until the middle of the 18th century that the glorious hand-knotted seamless carpets were born in the market town of Axminster and spread on the fl oors of palaces and country homes of Great Britain and beyond. The inventor of Axminster Carpets was a local man – Thomas Whitty – and it is his story and that of the second great weaver of Axminster, Harry Dutfi eld, which this booklet seeks to record. Abstract Additions, deletions and corrections are made to the Irish checklist of butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera). Elachista biatomella (Stainton, 1848) is added to the Irish list. The total number of confirmed Irish species of Lepidoptera now stands at 1480. Key words: Lepidoptera, additions, deletions, corrections, Irish list, Elachista biatomella Introduction Bond, Nash and O’Connor (2006) provided a checklist of the Irish Lepidoptera. Since its publication, many new discoveries have been made and are reported here. In addition, several deletions have been made. A concise and updated checklist is provided. The following abbreviations are used in the text: BM(NH) – The Natural History Museum, London; NMINH – National Museum of Ireland, Natural History, Dublin. The total number of confirmed Irish species now stands at 1480, an addition of 68 since Bond et al. (2006). Taxonomic arrangement As a result of recent systematic research, it has been necessary to replace the arrangement familiar to British and Irish Lepidopterists by the Fauna Europaea [FE] system used by Karsholt 60 Bulletin of the Irish Biogeographical Society No. 36 (2012) and Razowski, which is widely used in continental Europe. -

HEYDER ALIYEV CENTRE, Azerbaijan Zaha Hadid Architects Background In 2013, the Heydar Aliyev Center opened to the public in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. The cultural center, designed by Zaha Hadid, has become the primary building for the nation's cultural programs, aspiring instead to express the sensibilities of Azeri culture and the optimism of a nation that looks to the future. This report presents a case study of the project. It will include the background information, a synopsis of the architect's mastery of structural design. Also, some special elements of this building will be discussed in detail. And the structural design of the whole complex will be reviewed through diagrams and the simplified computer-based structural analysis. The Heydar Aliyev Center Since 1991, Azerbaijan has been working on modernizing and developing Baku’s infrastructure and architecture in order to depart from its legacy of normative Soviet Modernism. The center is named for Heydar Aliyev, the leader of Soviet-era Azerbaijan from 1969 to 1982, and President of Azerbaijan from October 1993 to October 2003. The project is located in the center of the city. And it played an extremely important role in the development of the city. It breaks from the rigid and often monumental Soviet architecture that is so prevalent in Baku. More importantly, it is a symbol of democratic philosophy thought. Under the influence of the new Azerbaijan party and the Soviet Socialist Republic of Azerbaijan leader’s political and economic reform, the center was also designed to show the potential of the country’s future cultural development, to encourage people to study the history, language, culture, national creed and spiritual values of their own country.
