Wu & Zhu L. Yang, A. innixus (Frost) Halling, A.R. Bessette & Bessette and A. roxanae (Frost) Klofac are described as new records from Mexico. These species are distributed in temperate montane cloud forest and mixed forests and may grow associated forming mycorrhizas with Fagus grandifolia Ehrh. subsp. mexicana (Martínez) E. Murray, Quercus laurina Humb et Bonpl., Q. sartorii Liebm. and Q. scytophylla Liebm. Descriptions, distribution, photographs and a key for the species of Aureoboletus from Mexico are presented. We assessed the influence of acorn burial depth on seed germination and seedling emergence for eight Mexican oak species (Q. affinis, Q. castanea, Q. coccolobifolia, Q. laeta, Q. mexicana, Q. polymorpha, Q. tinkhamii and Q. viminea). We performed a glasshouse experiment in which acorns were buried at five soil depths (0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 cm). After four months, acorn germination and seedling emergence were recorded. Buried acorns showed higher germination and seedling emergence than unburied ones, but burial depth also influenced these responses. The optimum burial depth for seedling emergence of each species was 2, 4, 6 and 8 cm depth for four species (Q. castanea, Q. mexicana, Q. tinkhamii, and Q. viminea); 2 and 4 cm for Q. laeta; as well as 2, 4 and 8 cm for Q. coccolobifolia.     The Collection of Oak Trees of Mexico and Central America in Iturraran Botanical Gardens Francisco Garin Garcia Iturraran Botanical Gardens, northern Spain [email protected] Overview Iturraran Botanical Gardens occupy 25 hectares of the northern area of Spain’s Pagoeta Natural Park. They extend along the slopes of the Iturraran hill upon the former hay meadows belonging to the farmhouse of the same name, currently the Reception Centre of the Park. The minimum altitude is 130 m above sea level, and the maximum is 220 m. Within its bounds there are indigenous wooded copses of Quercus robur and other non-coniferous species. Annual precipitation ranges from 140 to 160 cm/year. The maximum temperatures can reach 30º C on some days of summer and even during periods of southern winds on isolated days from October to March; the winter minimums fall to -3º C or -5 º C, occasionally registering as low as -7º C. Frosty days are few and they do not last long. It may snow several days each year. Soils are fairly shallow, with a calcareous substratum, but acidified by the abundant rainfall. In general, the pH is neutral due to their action. Collections The first plantations date back to late 1987. There are currently approximately 5,000 different taxa, the majority being trees and shrubs. There are around 3,000 species, including around 300 species from the genus Quercus; 100 of them are from Mexico and Central America. Se registraron 199 especies, correspondientes a 165 géneros y 91 familias botánicas. La estructura vertical mostró tres estratos arbóreos, uno arbustivo y otro herbáceo. Las especies dominantes en el arbóreo superior fueron Liquidambar styraciflua, Quercus germana y Q. pinnativenulosa. En el arbóreo intermedio destacaron Magnolia schiedeana, Persea liebmannii e Ilex rubra. El arbóreo inferior estuvo ampliamente dominado por Eugenia xalapensis. Este bosque de niebla relicto representa un eslabón importante dentro del conjunto de áreas de este tipo de vegetación situadas entre Hidalgo y Tamaulipas. Palabras clave: bosque mesófilo de montaña, Sierra Madre Oriental. ABSTRACT The floristics and structure of a cloud forest in Copalillos, San Luis Potosí, is presented. Until very recently, this forest was not recorded in the existing cartography. A total of 199 species, corresponding to 165 genera and 91 botanical families, were recorded. The forest structure consists of three arboreal layers (upper, middle and lower), besides shrub and herbaceous strata. The dominant species in the upper tree stratum are Liquidambar styraciflua, Quercus germana and Q.

A total of 3,624 individuals were collected, which belonged one division, 1 class, 5 orders, 13 families, 33 genera, 131 species. The majority of the fruiting bodies belonged to orders Agaricales, Russulales, and Boletales, whereas a minority belonged to orders Cantharellales and Thelephorale. In Agaricales, there were 6 families, 9 genera, 49 species, and 1,343 individuals; in Russulales, 1 family, 2 genera, 35 species, and 854 individuals; in Boletales, 4 families, 19 genera, 40 species, and 805 individuals; in Cantharellales, 1 family, 2 genera, 5 species, and 609 individuals; and in Thelephorale, 1 family, 1 genus, 2 species, and 13 individuals. The most frequently observed families were Russulaceae (854 individuals representing 35 species), Boletaceae (652 individuals representing 34 species), and Amanitaceae (754 individuals representing 25 species). The greatest numbers of overall and dominant species and individual fruiting bodies were observed in July. Most species and individuals were observed at altitudes of 1~99 m, and population sizes dropped significantly at altitudes of 300 m and higher. Apparently, the highest diversity o of species and individuals occurred at climatic conditions with a mean temperature of 23.0~25.9 C, maximum temperature of o o 28.0~29.9 C, minimum temperature of 21.0~22.9 C, relative humidity of 77.0~79.9%, and rainfall of 300 mm or more.

Se seleccionaron cuarenta individuos maduros de Q. germana para comparación (20 árboles sanos y 20 árboles con daño severo, > 15 perforaciones en el fuste causadas por P. roseni). En árboles sanos y dañados fueron medidos los niveles de herbivoría, el porcentaje de nitrógeno foliar, la concentración total de fenoles y la producción de bellotas. La herbivoría fue significativamente mayor (P< 0.05) en los encinos sanos que en los dañados. El grupo de encinos sanos tuvo 1.5 veces más herbivoría foliar que el grupo de los dañados. El contenido de nitrógeno foliar en Q. germana (5.3%) mostró variaciones significativas en relación a las estaciones (estación lluviosa = 5.2% y estación seca = 5.1%) y entre grupos de daño, como también en la interacción de estación y grupo. El grupo de árboles dañados tuvo 1.2 y 1.5 veces más concentración de fenoles que el grupo de los sanos durante la estación lluviosa y la estación seca, respectivamente.

(2008): Xerocomus s. l. in the light of the present state of knowledge. – Czech Mycol. 60(1): 29–62. The definition of the generic limits of Xerocomus s. l. and particularly the delimitation of this genus from Boletus is very unclear and controversial. During his study of European species of the Boletaceae, the author has come to the conclusion that Xerocomus in a wide concept is a heterogeneous mixture of several groups of species. These groups are separated from each other by different anatomical and some other characters. Also recent molecular studies show that Xerocomus s. l. is not a monophyletic group. In agreement with these facts, the European species of Xerocomus s. l. whose anatomy was studied by the present author are here classified into the following, more distinctly delimited genera: Xerocomus s. str., Phylloporus, Xerocomellus gen. nov., Hemileccinum gen. nov. and Pseudoboletus. Boletus badius and Boletus moravicus, also often treated as species of Xerocomus, are retained for the present in the genus Boletus. The differences between Xerocomus s. str., Phylloporus, Xerocomellus, Hemileccinum, Pseudoboletus and Boletus (which is related to this group of genera) are discussed in detail. Two new genera, Xerocomellus and Hemileccinum, and necessary new combinations of species names are proposed. These institutions cultivate approximately six million plant species, representing around 100,000 taxa in cultivation. Botanic gardens make an important contributionex to situ conservation with a high number of threat- ened plant species represented in their collections. To show how the Francisco Javier Clavijero Botanic Garden (JBC) contributes to the conservation of Mexican flora, we asked the following questions: 1) How is vascular plant diversity currently conserved in the JBC?, 2) How well is this garden perform- ing with respect to the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC) and the Mexican Strategy for Plant Conservation (MSPC)?, and 3) How has the garden’s scientific collection contributed to the creation of new knowledge (description of new plant species)? Methods: We used data from the JBC scientific living collection stored in BG-BASE. We gathered information on species names, endemism, and endan- gered status, according to national and international policies, and field data associated with each species. Key results: We found that 12% of the species in the JBC collection is under some risk category by international and Mexican laws. A key to the Boletales from Belize and the Dominican Republic is provided, followed by descriptions, drawings of the micro-structures and photographs of each identified species. Approximately 456 collections from Belize and 222 from the Dominican Republic were studied comprising 58 species of boletes, greatly augmenting the knowledge of the diversity of this group in the Caribbean Basin. A total of 52 species in 14 genera were identified from Belize, including 14 new species. Twenty-nine of the previously described species are new records for Belize and 11 are new for Central America. In the Dominican Republic, 14 species in 7 genera were found, including 4 new species, with one of these new species also occurring in Belize, i.e. Retiboletus vinaceipes. Only one of the previously described species found in the Dominican Republic is a new record for Hispaniola and the Caribbean.

Despite phylogenetic and taxonomic progress on the genus over the past 45 years, classification of species at the subsectional level remains unchanged since the early treatments by WL Trelease, AA Camus, and CH Muller. In recent work, we used a RAD-seq based phylogeny including 250 species sampled from throughout the Americas and Eurasia to reconstruct the timing and biogeography of the North American oak radiation. This work demonstrates that the North American oak flora comprises mostly regional species radiations with limited phylogenetic affinities to Mexican clades, and two sister group connections to Eurasia. Using this framework, we describe the regional patterns of oak diversity within North America and formally classify 62 species into nine major North American subsections within sections Lobatae (the red oaks) and Quercus (the Citation: Manos, P.S.; Hipp, A.L. [email protected] Quercus is a genus of trees and shrubs with between 300 and 600 species depending on current opinion. Mexico is known as the primary center of diversity of the genus and according to Valencia (2004) there are 161 species in Mexico, all belonging to subgenus Quercus. 81 of these are in Section Quercus, 76 in Section Lobatae and 4 in Section Protobalanus. The Mexican states with the greatest species diversity are Oaxaca, Jalisco and Nuevo Leon. However, more than half of the states have records of at least 20 species, and the state of Puebla currently has more than 33 species registered. The Botanic Garden of the Benemerita University of Puebla started in 1995 the development of an oak collection including some from other countries. After several trials, the collection has 170 individuals belonging to 61 species, of which 44 are Mexican. Of these, 23 belong to Section Quercus (Table 1), and 21 to Section Lobatae (Table 2). In addition there are two new species which are currently being described, one native to Oaxaca and Puebla and the other native to Hidalgo. The oak species grown here include more than 80% of those reported for the states of Morelos, Federal District, Tlaxcala and Hidalgo. The collection is expanding but we need more introductions from states such as Guerrero, Nuevo Leon and Jalisco.
