Es esa presencia constante del mar la que ha marcado el carácter de Cimavilla. Ya desde la época romana, una de las actividades de los ‘playos’, como se llama a los vecinos del barrio, ha sido la pesca. Esta tradición se rescata en cualquier recorrido por el viejo barrio. Las casas ‘mariñanas’, con corredores y contrafachadas de madera, muy típicos de Gijón, con cortafuegos de piedra, jalonan calles y plazuelas, como la de la Corrada, la calle del Rosario, la de Atocha, los Remedios… Cimavilla siempre ha sido un barrio muy familiar, de marineros, en el que todo el mundo se conocía y que hacía las mejores fiestas de la ciudad. En la actualidad, las voces de las pescaderas se han apagado y han dado paso al rumor de sus numerosas sidrerías, restaurantes, cafeterías y bares de copas. Aunque el olor a salitre y el sonido de las gaviotas todavía recuerdan las tradiciones pescadoras y marineras que prevalecieron durante siglos en la península. Ya en época romana, Gijón tuvo una importante actividad pesquera. Lo delata la fábrica de salazones, que, junto a las termas, las murallas, los aljibes y las canalizaciones, son testigos de la presencia latina en la ciudad. Las pesquerías se situaron fuera de las murallas, en la Plazuela del Marqués, para alejarlo de la población y evitar los malos olores. Las ruinas de estas construcciones aún se pueden apreciar en un paseo por la parte baja del barrio.

Cimavilla siempre ha sido un barrio muy familiar, de marineros, en el que todo el mundo se conocía y que hacía las mejores fiestas de la ciudad. En la actualidad, las voces de las pescaderas se han apagado y han dado paso al rumor de sus numerosas sidrerías, restaurantes, cafeterías y bares de copas.

Entrando por las reconstruidas puertas de la muralla, nos adentramos en un Gijón diferente, tranquilo, con casas de colores y con palacios en cada una de sus plazas: el palacio de Revillagigedo, en la plazuela del Marqués, el Pala- cio Valdés, frente a la siempre fotografiada iglesia de San Pedro, o el que fuera Casa Natal de Jovellanos, con la capilla de los Remedios anexa. En este último, merece la pena visitar el Retablo del Mar, de Sebastián Miranda. Esta obra de arte ensalza la tradición pesquera y marinera de Cimavilla al representar una escena habitual en el barrio: la subasta del pescado en la rula o lonja local. Back in Roman times, fishing was already an important activity in Gijón. We know this to be so from the fish preserving factory, which, together with the baths, the walls, the cisterns and the drains, were witness to the Roman presence in the city. The fish warehouses were located outside the walls, in Plazuela del Marqués, at a distance from the population to avert the bad smell. The ruins of these buildings can still be appreciated on a stroll through the lower part of the quarter.

At the present time, the voices of the fisherwomen have fallen silent and have given way to the murmur of its many cider taverns, restaurants, cafes and bars.

Entering through the reconstructed gates of the city walls, we find ourselves in a different, tranquil Gijón, with painted houses and palaces in every plaza: Revillagigedo Palace, in Plaza del Marqués; Valdés Palace, opposite the perennially photographed Church of San Pedro; and Jovellanos Palace, with Los Remedios Chapel attached. This last palace is worth a visit to view the Sea Tableau by Sebastian Miranda. Las callejuelas invitan a perderse para descubrir pequeños rincones norteños con sabor a mar.

Son 156 figuras que representan a otros tantos vecinos del barrio a los que el artista pagó 1,50 pesetas por ser retratados. Un poco más arriba, se abre un amplio espacio que parece dominar la vida del barrio. Es la Plaza de Arturo Arias o Campu les Monxes. A los pies del enorme Convento e iglesia de las Agustinas Recoletas, que desde 1842, tras la desa- mortización, fue destinado a fábrica estatal de tabacos, allí se dan cita los gijoneses para pasar la tarde con unas botellas de sidra y con algunas raciones, casi siempre con productos de la mar. En el entorno de la plaza, destacan dos tradicionales casas de pescadores, exponente del sabor marinero que todavía caracteriza Cimavilla. Se distinguen por sus peque- ñas dimensiones y por la existencia de una escalera de piedra exterior que da acceso a la vivienda. Este elemento indica que estas casas fueron construidas antes de 1844, ya que en esa fecha las escaleras exteriores se prohibieron por ordenanzas municipales. Las callejuelas invitan a perderse para descubrir pequeños rincones norteños con sabor a mar. En la Plaza de la Corrada, donde antiguamente se celebraban los actos públicos y las corridas de toros, se descubre el Palacio de Alvargonzález. En la fachada del edificio, de origen noble como se puede apreciar por los escudos heráldicos de la fachada, concretamente en el detalle del balcón corrido realizado en madera, se apre- cian claras influencias de la tradición constructiva mariñana de Asturias, es decir, de las casas típicas de las zonas coste- ras de la región. The side streets invite you to wander freely and discover small northern nooks and crannies with the flavour of the sea.

It contains 156 likenesses of people from the neighbourhood who were paid 1.50 pesetas by the artist to sit for the tableau. El alero del tejado, tan proyectado hacia el exterior y tan ornamentado mediante el artesonado de madera, servía para preservar las fachadas, o en este caso los balcones, de las inclemencias del tiempo en una zona como la cantábrica donde la lluvia es frecuente. Antes de llegar al puerto, es parada obligada la capilla de la Soledad. Este pequeño oratorio fue erigido en el año 1674. A mediados del siglo XIX se trasladaron aquí las imágenes de Santa Catalina y de la Virgen de las Mareas, proceden- tes de la Capilla de Santa Catalina que existió en el cerro, donde tenía su sede el gremio de Mareantes. La Soledad es la segunda advocación religiosa que nos encontramos en el barrio, después de la Virgen de los Remedios. El barrio alto de Gijón siempre ha estado dividido en dos grupos en función del gremio al que cada uno perteneciera. Los cante- ros veneraban a la Virgen de los Remedios y los mareantes o pescadores a la Virgen de la Soledad y era famosa la riva- lidad entre ellos. El Gremio de Mareantes era el que financiaba y organizaba la captura de ballenas en el puerto gijonés. Los atalayeros, desde lo más alto de Cimavilla, en el Cerro de Santa Catalina, divisaban esos preciados cetáceos y avisaban con hogue- ras a los balleneros que salían a su encuentro para darles caza. La ballena, una vez arrastrada a tierra, se despiezaba y repartía. La tradición mandaba que el vientre fuese para la Capilla de La Soledad, una aleta para el pescador que le había dado muerte y la otra repartida entre toda la comunidad de pescadores. La última ballena fue apresada en el año de 1722 y de ese pasado ballenero perviven nombres como el Tránsito de las Ballenas, en la bajada al puerto junto a la animada Cuesta’l Cholo.

are highly ornamented thanks to the wooden coffering, served to preserve the façades –or, in this case, the balconies– from the elements in an area like that of the Bay of Biscay, where it often rains.

Before reaching the marina, a visit to La Soledad Chapel is a must. This small oratory was erected in 1674. In the mid-19th century, the images of Santa Catalina and of La Virgen de las Mareas (Our Lady of the Tides) were transferred here from the Chapel of Santa Catalina, which existed on the headland and where the Seamen’s Guild had its seat. La Virgen de la Soledad (Our Lady of Solitude) is the second most popular object of religious devotion to be found in the district, after La Virgen de los Remedios (Our Lady of Remedies). The high quarter of Gijón has always been divided into two groups based on the guild to which a person belonged. The stone masons venerated Our Lady of Remedies, while the seafarers and fishermen were devoted to Our Lady of Solitude, with the rivalry between them being renowned.

The Seamen’s Guild was responsible for financing and organising the capture of whales in the port of Gijón. The lookouts on Santa Catalina Headland sighted these valued cetaceans from the top of Cimavilla and let the whalers know by means of bonfires so that they could set to sea in pursuit of them. Once the whale had been dragged ashore, it was quartered and shared out. Tradition commanded that the belly go to the Chapel of Solitude, one fin to the fisherman who had killed it, while the other was shared out among the entire community of fishermen. Although the last whale was caught in 1722, the quarter’s whaling past lives on in names like the Tránsito de las Ballenas (the Whales’ Passage), on the hill down to the port next to the bustling Cuesta’l Cholo.

Tuvimos la suerte de descubrir Gijón en familia hace tan solo unos meses. Ya habíamos visitado la espectacular Asturias, en otras ocasiones pero sin embargo, su niña bonita aún nos era desconocida. Nos encontramos una ciudad muy amable para disfrutarla en familia con tranquilidad, ya que combina muchos aspectos que la hacen una ciudad estupenda para ir con los peques: su buena mesa, sus playas, su puerto pesquero que tanto gusta a los niños, así como una completa agenda infantil y una gran cantidad de recursos pensados para ellos. Y la enorme amabilidad de sus habitantes. Nos pareció una ciudad accesible para recorrerla a pie, o en transpor- te público lo que facilita mucho las cosas cuando vas con niños pequeños como era nuestro caso. La fecha de nuestra visita nos brindó la oportunidad de conocer el Festi- val FETEN 2014 (Feria Europea de Artes Escénicas para niños y niñas). Nos encantó descubrir el bullicio de actividades que el Festival ocasionaba en sus calles más céntricas, así como las representaciones de teatro dirigidas específicamente al público familiar. Además, visitamos el Acuario, el Museo del Ferrocarril, el museo Evaristo Valle, y el Jardín Botánico Atlántico, y en todos ellos encontramos siempre un rincón adaptado y dedicado a los más pequeños, o una actividad realizada con cariño para ellos. Disfrutamos mucho recorriendo el Puerto, Cimadevilla y el Cerro de Santa Catalina. Nos encantaron esos divertidos merenderos para los domingos soleados, y nos lo pasamos bomba (nosotros y los peques) aprendiendo sobre el proceso de elaboración de la sidra en un llagar. Sin duda...¡volveremos!

We were fortunate to discover Gijón as a family just a few months ago now. We had already visited the spectacular region of Asturias, but on other occasions, although its “favourite daughter” was still unknown to us. We found it to be a very friendly city to enjoy calmly as a family, as it combines many aspects that make it a great city to visit with the kids: good food, beaches, a fishing harbour that children like ever so much, as well as a complete programme of events and loads of amenities targeted specifically at children. Not counting the tremendous friendliness of its inhabitants! We found it to be an accessible city to explore on foot or on public transport, which makes things a lot easier when you visit with young children, as we did. The dates we were there meant we had the chance to get to know the FETEN 2012 Festival (European Theatre Fair for Children). We loved discovering the hustle and bustle of the festival activities in the main streets and theatre performances aimed specifically at families. We also visited the Aquarium, the Railway Museum, the Evaristo Valle Museum and the Botanic Gardens, in all of which we always found a place adapted and devoted to the youn- ger members of the family, or an activity organized for them with care and attention. We really enjoyed visiting the Marina, Cimadevilla and Santa Catalina Headland. We loved those fun picnic restaurants called merenderos for sun- ny Sundays, and we have had a great time (both us and the kids) learning about the process of making cider at a cider mill. Without a doubt... we’ll be back!

Una mirada al pasado Si en el Monte Deva nos acercamos al pasado prehistóri- co, en la Campa Torres y en la Villa de Veranes encontraremos las huellas romanas del pasado gijonés. Ésta última es un museo de sitio abierto al público desde 2007. Alberga los restos arqueológicos de una villa romana contruida en el Bajo Imperio (s. IV d. de C.) sobre las primitivas ruinas de un asentamiento rústico altoimperial de considerable rele- vancia. La gran casa señorial, perteneciente a un notable propietario, que seguramente se llamaba Veranius conti- nuó en uso hasta el siglo V d. de C.

Etnografía viva Un paseo por la zona rural de Gijón es también la ocasión perfecta para ver de cerca un hórreo, el granero típico de Asturias. Durante todo el recorrido podrás encontrar diferentes ejemplos de hórreos y paneras, pero ¿qué es un “horru” (hórreo)? Es una construcción tradicional asturiana que se utiliza para guardar la cosecha. Es un elemento imprescindible en el paisaje asturiano y podemos encon- trarlo en cualquier zona de la geografía de Asturias. El cuerpo central tiene forma cúbica y se coloca encima de cuatro columnas de piedra (los pegollos), que lo aislan del suelo, la humedad y los roedores. With views of the sea and of history A visit to Mount Deva not only offers magnificent views of virtually the entire borough of Gijón, but also reveals a necropolis of burial mounds comprising a dozen archaeological sites, nine of which comprise burial mounds dating from at least 5,000 years ago. This makes Mount Deva something other than simply a place of great natural beauty. It is an enclave chosen as transcendent dozens of centuries ago by Stone Age peasant societies, which made it a place of repose for their dead.Una mirada al pasado

A look back into the past If Mount Deva reveals the prehistoric past, Campa Torres and Villa Veranes offer up traces of Gijón’s Roman past. The latter is a site museum which has been open to the public since 2007. It houses the archaeological remains of a Roman villa built during the Late Empire ( 4th century AD) on built on the remains of an early Roman Empire agricultural estate of considerable importance. The great stately villa, which belonged to a noteworthy owner in all probability called Veranius, remained in use up until the 5th century AD.

The Middle Ages in Gijón The countryside surrounding Gijón is dotted with a number of Romanesque churches, both humble and haughty at one and the same time, that have come down to the present day in various stages of conservation. These churches generally exhibit the characteristics of popular Romanesque: they are small size, with a single nave, modestly decorated with a simple structure and the absence of major collections of iconography, seducing visitors with the charm of their simplicity and their seamless integration into the natural environment in which they are set. San Salvador de Deva, San Miguel de Dueñas in Castiello, San Juan Evangelista in Fano and San Vicente de Caldones are just a few of the examples of Gijón Romanesque.

Living ethnography A walk through the countryside surrounding Gijón is also the perfect opportunity for see an hórreo close up, i.e. the raised granary-cum-storehouse typical of Asturias. Throughout the tour, you will find many examples of hórreos and paneras (their bigger “sister”). But what is an "horru" or “hórreo”? It is a traditional Asturian construction used to store the harvest. It is an essential element in the Asturian landscape and can be found all over the region. The raised central body has the shape of a cube and stands on four stone columns (called pegollos), which isolate it from the ground, damp and rodents. Gijón no sería hoy lo que es y sus visitantes no podrían interpretar actualmente esta ciudad si en este último siglo y medio el proceso de industrialización no hubiese veni- do acompañado de chimeneas, talleres, fábricas, ciuda- delas, máquinas y personas capaces de crear un crisol de formas de vida, costumbres, maneras de vivir y trabajar. Las huellas, los latidos y el patrimonio industrial son legados de la memoria del trabajo y del lugar y objetos de la memoria colectiva. El patrimonio industrial aún está presen- te y se presiente en la ciudad de Gijón. Siguiendo su estela podemos apreciar los antecedentes y la continuidad de la transformación de la ciudad que en 1900 tenía aproxima- damente 50.000 habitantes y al calor del impulso industrial más que quintuplicó su población en el siglo XX.

En el antiguo barrio de Cimavilla, encontramos la Fábrica de Tabacos, ubicada en el antiguo convento de las Agusti- nas Recoletas desde 1843. El edificio de la Fábrica, austero e imponente, fue terminado en 1679. La capilla sirvió de alma- cén hasta el cierre de la Fábrica en el año 2002, con restos de frescos en sus paredes y un microclima original albergaba los fardos de tabaco, que luego se transformaban y manu- facturaban en productos como el popular farias o los más distinguidos cigarros puros suministrados a la Casa Real Española.

En Cimavilla se encuentra asimismo la Litografía Viña, en la calle de Honesto Batalón. Es quizá uno de los exponentes más notables de la pujante industria de artes gráficas que tuvo la ciudad en el siglo XX. Inaugurado en su nueva ubica- ción en el año 2001 es hoy un centro de Estampación Artís- tica que aspira a ser un punto de referencia internacional en el campo de la litografía y el grabado. Gijón's Industrial Heritage

Gijón would not be what it is today and its visitors could not interpret the present-day city if theprocess of industrialization in the last century and a half had not been accompanied by chimneys, workshops, factories, workers’ dwelling compounds, machinery and people able to create a melting pot of ways of life, customs and ways of working. The traces and heartbeat of its industrial heritage are legacies that remind us of the work carried out at these sites as well as constituting objects of the collective memory. Gijón’s industrial heritage is still present and can still be sensed in the city. Following the trail of this heritage, one can appreciate the history and continuity of the transformation of the city, which had about 50,000 inhabitants in 1900, a population which was to grow more than fivefold owing to the industrial boom in the 20th century.

The old district of Cimavilla is home to the Tobacco Factory, which occupied the former convent of the Augustinian Recollect Sisters from 1843 on. The austere and imposing building was completed in 1679. The chapel served as a warehouse until the closure of the factory in 2002. With remains of frescoes on the walls and a unique microclimate, it was used for storing bales of tobacco. These were subsequently transformed into products such as the popular farias cigar and the more distinguished cigars supplied to the Spanish Royal Household.

The Viña Lithographic Printing Shop is likewise located in Cimavilla, in Honesto Batalón Street. It is possibly one of the most outstanding examples of the city’s booming graphic arts industry in the 20th century. Laboral Ciudad de la Cultura ocupa un edificio singular en Gijón. Erigido a mediados del siglo XX, la idea original era dar cabida y formación a los huérfanos de la minería, sin embargo el proyecto, bajo la dirección del arquitecto Luis Moya Laboral Ciudad Blanco, comenzó ya a construirse como Universidad Labo- ral. Desde 1948 y hasta la paralización de las obras en 1957 se de la Cultura construyeron diferentes dependencias que darían forma a este edificio de más de 130.000 metros cuadrados, pensado como un recinto autárquico y cerrado sobre si mismo que contaba con aulas, talleres, salón de actos, capilla, residen- cias e incluso una granja de 100 hectáreas. Laboral City of Culture occupies a remarkable building in Gijón. Erected in the mid-20th century, the original idea was to provide accommodation and an education for miners’ orphans. However, when building commenced under the supervision of architect Luis Moya Blanco, it was as a Universidad Laboral, i.e. Laboral City an educational centre for working-class children. From 1948 until the termination of work in 1957, different edifices were of Culture raised that were to give shape to this building occupying over 130,000 square meters, intended as a self-sufficient complex with classrooms, workshops, an auditorium, a chapel, halls of residences and even a 100 hectare farm. In the 1980s, the former Universidad Laboral de Gijón was transferred to the National Institute of Integrated Education, with secondary and vocational training studies being imparted there among other specialties. From the 90s on, many of the facilities already into disuse entered into a process of steady deterioration.

Los paseos guiados en la Laboral, la variada programación artística del Teatro, las exposiciones temporales o las actividades para el públi- co infantil y familiar del programa Vamos! son solo una muestra de lo que se ofrece en este complejo cultural y que se completa con los actos congresuales y con servicios complementarios como la Tienda y el Café de la Laboral. Arquitectura clasicista que mira al futuro La Laboral fue construida según los ideales de la arquitectura clasicista, y en ella se mezclan de manera peculiar diferentes estilos artísticos y arquitectónicos que merece la pena contemplar con detenimiento. La gran Plaza central es el eje alrededor del cual se dispone todo el edificio. Con sus 150 metros de largo por 50 metros de ancho y pavimentada en granito, sigue el estilo de las plazas castellanas, aunque su principal inspiración es la Plaza de San Marcos en Venecia. En torno a ella se disponen las fachadas de los espacios principales del conjunto: el Teatro, la Torre, la Iglesia, además de la Facultad de Comer- cio, Turismo y Ciencias Sociales “Jovellanos” de la Universi- dad de Oviedo, la Escuela Superior de Arte Dramático del Principado, el Conservatorio Profesional de Música y Danza de Gijón o el Centro Integrado de Formación Profesional. El Teatro de la Laboral En un lugar privilegiado de la Plaza se encuentra el Teatro. Concebido en origen como un gran salón de actos para estudiantes y profesores de la antigua Universidad Laboral, el recinto se ha convertido en el primer teatro de titularidad autonómica en la comunidad y en uno de los mejores del norte de España en cuanto a espacios, capacidad y tecno- logía. El Teatro ofrece al público una amplia y variada programa- ción de calidad técnica y artística en un espacio único que cuenta con 1.426 localidades repartidas en la sala principal, los palcos y el anfiteatro. Además, dispone de salas de ensayo, reuniones y congresos, espacios auxiliares a disposi- ción de empresas y particulares que deseen alquilarlas para cualquier tipo de actividad formativa, cultural, seminarios o congresos. Con la capacidad de estas salas, el aforo se acerca a los 2.000 espectadores, convirtiendo al Teatro de la Laboral en el de mayor capacidad de Asturias. Mención especial merece la Sala de Pinturas, situada en el segundo piso, conocida por los frescos de Enrique Segura que decoran sus paredes y que reflejan de una forma alegó- rica la historia de la fundación de la Universidad Laboral. After a profound refurbishment, this monumental complex was re-opened in 2007 reconverted into a place where different proposals converge, including creativity, art, education and culture. The guided tours of the Laboral, the varied artistic programme of the Theatre, the temporary exhibitions and the activities for children and families comprising the Vamos! programme are just a sample of what is on offer in this cultural complex; an offer that is rounded off with venues for congresses and conventions and complementary services such as the Laboral Shop and Coffee Bar. Classicist architecture that looks to the future The Laboral was built according to the ideals of classicist architecture, being a combination of different artistic and architectural styles worthy of careful consideration. The large central Square is the hub around which the entire building is laid out. Measuring 150 metres long by 50 metres wide and paved in granite, it follows the style of Castilian plazas, although its main inspiration is the Piazza San Marco in Venice. The façades of the building’s main edifices are disposed around it: the Theatre, Tower and Church, in addition to the Jovellanos Faculty of Commerce, Tourism and Social Sciences, part of the University of Oviedo, the Principality of Asturias School of Dramatic Art, the Gijón Professional Conservatory of Music and Dance and the Integrated Vocational Training Centre. The Laboral Theatre The Theatre occupies a privileged spot on the Square. Originally conceived as a large auditorium for the students and teachers of the former Universidad Laboral, the building has become the first theatre owned by the regional government in the region and one of the best in northern Spain in terms of facilities, seating and technology. The Theatre schedules a wide and varied programme that has both technical and artistic quality in a unique venue with 1,426 seats distributed over the stalls, balconies and upper circle. It also has rehearsal, meeting and conference rooms, ancillary spaces available to companies and individuals wishing to rent them for any type of educational, cultural or business activity, seminars or conferences. With the combined seating capacity of these rooms and halls, the overall seating capacity is close to 2,000 spectators, making the Laboral Theatre the largest venue of its kind in Asturias. Vistas privilegiadas desde la Torre Una visita guiada a Laboral Ciudad de la Cultura permite conocer cada detalle de este imponente conjunto, en el que dos edificios llaman la atención por su singularidad: la Igle- sia y la Torre, visible desde numerosos puntos de la ciudad. La Iglesia es un espectacular edificio de forma ovalada que impacta a primera vista al acceder a la Plaza central. Con una planta elíptica con más de 800 metros cuadrados, sobresale su cúpula interior de carácter bizantino formada por un sistema de nervios cruzados al modo hispanoárabe. Sus 2.300 toneladas de peso y los cerca de medio millón de ladrillos configuran una de las cúpulas de mayores dimensiones en Europa. Detrás de la Iglesia está la Torre, quizá el edificio más carac- terístico de la Laboral, puesto que es el que sirve para identi- ficar a la Ciudad de la Cultura a primera vista. The Asturian Pre-Romanesque Art Reception and Interpreatation Centre is dedicated to providing a rigorous, scientific explanation of the monuments that make up the Asturian Pre-Romanesque. Located in the Old Rural Schools on El Naranco, its proximity to Santa Maria del Naranco and San Miguel de Lillo makes the Centre the ideal place for receiving and attending to visitors who come to see these monuments on El Naranco.
