Hagia Sophia CONT'D OVER TURKISHCLASS101.COM ADVANCED AUDIO BLOG S1 #1 - TOP 10 TURKISH TOURIST DESTINATIONS: HAGIA SOPHIA 2 2. Hagia Sophia is located in Turkey in the city of Istanbul. In its history, the building has been an Orthodox basilica, a Roman Catholic cathedral, and a mosque. The building was first dedicated in 360 AD, and in those days, it was Constantinople's Greek Patriarchal cathedral. It became a cathedral for Roman Catholics for about 60 years in the 1200s, but it was changed back to an Orthodox church after that until 1453 when it was converted to a mosque. In 1931 it became a secular building, and then four years later it was turned into a museum. 3. Some experts hail the structure as the epitome of architectural work from Byzantine times, and the dome is one of the most famous views from Istanbul. For almost a thousand years, it was the world's largest cathedral. 4. In addition to the dome, Hagia Sophia is also known for the numerous holy relics and mosaics. An incredible iconostasis greets visitors to the museum, and the building is also home to two lustration urns that came from Pergamon. Other impressive features inside the structure include the Marble Door and numerous mosaics depicting Jesus, Mary, and various saints and rulers. Many mosaics were revealed during a restoration of the building done in the 1930s when some of the plaster was removed. The restoration process was especially interesting because of the building's history as both a Christian and Muslim place of worship. This resulted in the display of iconic works of art from both faiths, which contradict each other. 5. Cultural Heritage-The current state of Hagia Sophia doesn't contain any architectural elements from the original building which was built around 300 AC. The building has been demolished twice, the first one during the riots and the latter during Nika rebellion. The building we see today was built during 500 BC. Emperor Justinianus undertook the construction of the building. Upon the completion of the building, he said- "Solomon, I have surpassed thee!"(referring to King Solomon's temple in Jerusalem). The dome of the building had been severely damaged in an earthquake, which then was reconstructed in a different way, aiming for a more robust structure. Build It Up, Tear it Down The Hagia Sophia structure that exists today contains nothing of the original building from the 300s. The building was destroyed two times—once during riots and a second time during the Nika Revolt—and what stands today is the structure that was erected during the 500s. Justinian is credited with the current structure, and after it was built, he supposedly proclaimed, "Solomon, I have outdone thee!" An earthquake severely damaged the dome of the building, which then had to be rebuilt using a different construction in order to make it stronger than the original dome. Cappadocia is a region in Turkey that is easily recognized by its hoodoos. These rock formations were formed over millions of years ago by the consolidation of sedimentary rocks created by the volcanic out-spurts. Over time, these rock formations eroded until they became the famous chimney shaped trademarks of Cappadocia. Earliest human settlements in Cappadocia date back to the Ancient Roman Period when shelters and churches were carved into these rock formations. These carved settlements now are a tourist draw as people visit the area to see what life was like so far back in history. The Gerome Open Air Museum is one of Turkey's most well-known destinations for tourists. The museum includes over 30 chapels and churches that have been carved right out of the rocks at Cappadocia. Some of these churches even have incredible frescoes on the walls inside of them. Some of those frescoes date back to the ninth century.

Present-day Armenia is bounded by Georgia to the north, Iran to the south-east, Azerbaijan to the east and Turkey to the west. From 1920 to 1991 Armenia was a Soviet Socialist Republic within the USSR, but historically its land encompassed a much greater area including parts of all present-day bordering countries (see fig.). At its greatest extent it occupied the plateau covering most of what is now central and eastern Turkey (c. 300,000 sq. km) bounded on the north by the Pontic Range and on the south by the Taurus and Kurdistan mountains. During the 11th century another Armenian state was formed to the west of Historic Armenia on the Cilician plain in south-east Asia Minor, bounded by the Taurus Mountains on the west and the Amanus (Nur) Mountains on the east. Its strategic location between East and West made Historic or Greater Armenia an important country to control, and for centuries it was a battlefield in the struggle for power between surrounding empires. Periods of domination and division have alternated with centuries of independence, during which the country was divided into one or more kingdoms. Zeugma, the world’s largest mosaic museum, surpasses even the Bardo of Tunis and the Antakya Museum in the ancient city of Antioch. A great mystery lies behind Göbeklitepe. What makes it unique is not the size or beauty of the monuments, but the date when they were built, roughly twelve thousand years ago! The bustling and colourful markets are where one experiences the heart and soul of the Southeast cities which lie between the Mesopotamia and the Mediterranean. The trade routes from the east, west and north that pass that intersect these cities have determined the history of the region’s civilization and its cultural development. Prof. Ferenc Péter Csirkés Keywords: History-Writing in Persian, Shah Qasim, Kanz al-javahir, Political Legitimacy, Ottoman Genealogies The present thesis discusses Shah Qasim’s (d. 1539-1540) Kanz al-javahir al-saniya fi’l-futuhat al-Sulaymaniya (Treasure of the Brilliant Jewels among the Conquests of Süleyman), a chronicle in Persian commissioned by Süleyman I (r. 1520-1566). It claims that Shah Qasim produced this work to legitimize Ottoman rule in the eyes of Persian speaking elites of Iraq and Iran. Süleyman and his court chose Shah Qasim for this job because he was an emigre from Tabriz, who absorbed the Timurid way of history-writing and was a master in the chancery style. While some historians have pointed out to the significance of the Kanz al-javahir, none of them has examined its stylistic, literary, and historical features thoroughly.

Ecology may be effective at driving adaptive divergence between lineages in different environments and climatic conditions. Because Anatolia has major mountain belts, paleogeographic characteristics, and unique climatic traits, it plays an important role in speciation and shows a barrier effect for many terrestrial species. In this study, we investigated the climatic preferences of 6 isolated evolutionary lineages of Typhlops vermicularis in Anatolia using ecological niche modeling. Our results revealed that both glacial (Last Glacial Maximum) and interglacial (Last Interglacial) modeling, as well as current modeling, showed the most important climatic variables that potentially limit the spread of 6 major lineages of T. vermicularis throughout all of Anatolia. In addition, our results revealed that 6 lineages of T. vermicularis could be adapted to different climatic conditions. Finally, our study demonstrates the unique climatic importance of Anatolia as a center for the local diversification of T. vermicularis. Key words: Climate, ecological niche modeling, Last Glacial Maximum, Last Interglacial, Reptilia, Turkey, Typhlops vermicularis 1.

Scientists think that mankind will in the near future be faced with a serious shortage of water and food. In the light of these developments, the biological diversity of a country is becoming a major strength, especially in terms of genetic resources. As a country that has vital resources for people’s food security. Turkey is one of the fortunate countries of the world from the viewpoint of biological diversity. This considerable wealth both offers our country economic opportunities and imposes upon it the responsibility to establish a conservation- utilization balance.

Turkey, which is found in the Alpine-Himalayan orogenic belt, contains oro-forests and subalpine pasture areas. Taurus Mountains extending in the southern part of Mediterranean geographical region abruptly rise from the Mediterranean coast and climb up to 3500 m of elevation. Karstic topographic forms notably karstic depressions and plateau surfaces are common between the elevation of 1800 and 2200 m in Taurus Mountains. The south facing slopes of Taurus Mountains have been deeply dissected by the rivers flowing into Mediterranean Sea. Oro-mediterranean climate which is characterized with cool and seldom orographic rainfall summers and snowy and cold winters prevaisl. The southern high slopes of the Taurus Mountains get humid air mass coming from Mediterranean Sea leading fog and rainfall during summers and this situation creates humid conditions which is favourable for the growth of productive forest and herbaceous vegetation. Most of the Taurus Mountains are mainly composed of limestone belonging to Palaeozoic, Mesozoic and Eocene periods.
