The English name is inaccurate because none of the condor species, the Andean condor and the Californian condor, is native to China. Plot Plot Plot takes place during the Jin-Song Wars. Yang Tiexin and Go Xiaotian are sworn brothers and Han patriots who hate the invaders Jurchen. They promise that their unborn children will become either sworn siblings (if both of the same sex) or a married couple (if they are opposite sexes). During the fight, the Jurchen fighter is wounded and ends up in Yang Tiexin yard. His wife finds him and heals him, and lets him go. The man saved by his wife, Jan Teksin, is the 6th prince of the Yurchen people. 3 months later, he sends people claiming that Yang Tiexin and Go Xiaotian are rebels and kill them two. It later emerged that the reason for this was that the prince fell in love with his wife Jan Tiexin and took her to the palace. After the death of Go Xiaotian and the disappearance of Yang Thiexin, the son of Go Xiaotian Go Jing grows up in Mongolia under the tutelage of Genghis Khan. He is a martial artist at the Jiannan Seven Freaks and Ma Yu from the Cuanzhen School, as well as his archery skills at Jebe. The Chinese title of the novel comes from an incident in Go Jing's youth when he shot two eagles with one arrow. Jan Thiexin's son, Jan Kahn, grows up as the son of Prince Jurchen. Although he is a mentor to Cu Chuji from the Cuanzhen sect, he also secretly learns the evil Nine Yin White Bone Claw technique from Mei Chaofeng. Go Jing is honest, faithful and righteous, but quick-witted. Yang Kang is clever but scheming and insidious. Eventually they meet each other and their respective lovers, Huang Rong and Mu Xiangchi. The main story follows the adventures of Go Jin and Huang Rong and their with the Five Greats. Meanwhile, Yang Kang conspires with the Jurchens to conquer his native land, the Song Dynasty. Yang Kang refuses to confirm his Han Chinese ethnicity and is strongly managed to gain wealth, fame and fame. His betrayal is slowly revealed throughout the novel in encounters he has with the main characters. With the help of Go Jing, Mongolia's army conquers the Jin Dynasty and subsequently turns its attention to the Song Dynasty. Go Jing does not want to help the Mongols in the attack on his native land, so he leaves Mongolia. Go Jing returns to the Song Dynasty and helps his fellow Han Chinese resist the impending Mongol invasion. On the other hand, Yang Kang dies of poisoning after trying to kill Huang Rong with a palm, but ends up in her studded soft armor, which was accidentally stained with poison. He leaves behind Moo Nianxi and their future son, whom Go Jing called Yang Go (the main character of the sequel). Meanwhile, the Mongolian invasion temporarily stops when Genghis Khan dies unexpectedly. The new translation of Anna Holmwood's novel Hero Born: Legends of the Heroes of Condor I (射雕英雄傳) is an important and well-thought-out addition to the Chinese canon in English. It is a long overdue translation of a key work of martial arts fiction, a novel that has widespread cultural significance in China, at least in part because it has been adapted several times for film and television. Jin Yong, alias Louis Cha, is widely known in the Chinese world, and the influence of his books is hard to overestimate. The publisher of this book seems to favor referring to it as Chinese Tolkien, and perhaps that is approaching the mark. When people think of fantasy settings, they usually imagine something not too far away from the Lord of the Rings or its derivatives. Yet Jin Yong is even more ubiquitous in the Chinese-speaking world than Tolkien is in the English world. Probably more than a bit of truth to the old joke that most Chinese students learn history not from textbooks, but from Jin Yong novels. I would add that, for many readers, his novels contribute to building broad conceptions of Chinese identity. The importance of his novels, and Condor Heroes in particular, goes far beyond sales and film adaptation. As Christopher Hamm beautifully puts it in his swordsman's paper: Yong and the modern Chinese martial art Novel, Jin Yong books can be read as talks between China's cultural and geographical/political manifestations. For the Heroes of Condor, the physical geography of China is divided between the retreating Song Dynasty, the Jin Dynasty and the Mongolian tribes. The song stands as the rightful heir to Han Chinese culture. Jin are the yurchen occupiers of Chinese territory, who brutally plundered the imperial capital and kidnapped the emperor. And the Mongolian tribes of the steppes are even more distant from the center of Khan, wild but perhaps honorable in their barbaric way, and ready to eventually conquer everything. As Hamm explains, the two main characters are the children of Han Chinese heroes brought up in the wrong hands: Go Jing with the Mongols and Yang Kang with the Jourchens. Their parents were Han Chinese heroes with illustrious ties to former heroes, but only Go Jing is really able to maintain his patriotic spirit, even among the wilds of the steppes. Thus, the novel can be seen as a struggle to define and defend han Chineseness in terms of exile or diaspora. That the novels were written in colonial Hong Kong by a man from zhejiang makes this reading all the more pointed.
