Ailsa Course, Turnberrry

This is a Mackenzie Ross masterpiece, one of the finest places on earth to play golf. The mixture of views over the to the , the ominous presence of constantly watchful over a stretch of links land that is second to none.

The Ailsa course has been an Open Championship venue since 1977 having been the host to one of the most dramatic Open showdowns in history. The “Duel in the Sun” saw and square off against each other.

There is no finer place to be on a long, hot, lazy summer’s day and when the golfing day is done, what better way to relax than in the Westin Turnberry Resort, a lavish 5 star establishment one of the top 10 best golf resorts in the world.

Western Gailes

Less widely known than venues of Prestwick, Royal Troon and Turnberry which lie in close proximity, this is nonetheless one of the finest tests of traditional links . The links is a tough challenge with heather, gorse and near inescapable rough for the wayward golfer. If that’s not enough the presence of three burns and a ditch cross the course at least seven times. Beautiful views across the Clyde Estuary to the peaks of Arran cre- ate a wonderful setting and a memorable discovery.

The Machrie

'No mere golfer deserves it, this extraordinary combination of beauty, solitude, and freedom' James Finnegan, author: Blasted Heaths and Blessed Greens.

Laid out in 1891 by pioneering designer Willie Campbell, and respected among golfing cognoscenti, The Machrie is now getting a wider name for itself as one of the world’s top links courses. When Campbell first saw the land being proposed for the course, he said it was ‘the best ground for a golf course that I have ever had the pleasure of viewing.’ In fact, apart from some minor modifications, this challenging course has changed little in over 100 years, and has a fascinating history.

Machrihanish Dunes Golf Club

In the southwest corner of the , Machrihanish Dunes Golf Club has been crafted by David McKlay Kidd: a landscape perfectly and naturally suited to the purest form of the royal and ancient game of golf. Here, in this unique corner of Scotland, lies one of the last remaining natural links sites.

Machrihanish Dunes Golf Club is the first golf course to have been built on a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSi) since the days of Old Tom Morris himself. It is also be the first 18-hole links golf course to be built on the west coast of Scotland in 100 years. Course architect and Scotsman David McLay Kidd, who is internationally acclaimed for his design of Bandon Dunes in Oregon and the The Castle Course at St. Andrews, created an inspired routing for Machrihanish Dunes measuring 7,175 yards

Royal Troon

The first Open was played here in 1923 and since then has woven itself into the very fabric of Scottish golf. Tranquil views over the Firth of Clyde leading south to the Ailsa Craig, this beauty disguises probably the toughest Open venue of them all. The links contains one of the longest 5’s on the Open rota. Its signature hole is the 8th, The Postage Stamp, the shortest on the Open rota. Most of the holes will test your game physically and mentally with consistent play required and no favours given.

Machrihanish

It’s first hole has become a famous opening requiring the opening tee ball to carry the Atlantic. The links is set in wonderful dunes on the western side of the remote Kintyre Peninsula. Wonderful rolling fairways and greens with course views across to the islands of Jura and Isaly.

It is a varied test for the competent golfer, with accuracy and links shot shaping required with the layout not just a predictable nine out and back!
