This article was conducted in NinhThuan Province, Vietnam in 2017. The subject of the study were the figures of the Champa Muslim community (Bani and Cham Islam), then the worshipers of the two groups above. The object of this research was Hindu effect on Bani Islam.The population in this research were the Bani religious figures and Cham Islam/Sunni whose numbers could not be identified completely because they were spread in various regions. The analysis that the author used in this study was a Qualitative Descriptive analysis. This article concludes thatin Vietnam there are two Islamic groups namely Cham Islam and Early Cham (Cham Bani). The way to worship the Cham Bani group was influenced by Hinduism, which has become a tradition of Vietnamese society before the arrival of Islam. This happened due to the unfinished Islamization process.Cham Bani's way of worship is still going on nowadays, even though there have been purification efforts from various parties to improve the way they worship. -

Who Invented the Bronze Drum? Nationalism, Politics, and a Sino- Vietnamese Archaeological Debate of the 1970s and 1980s XIAORONG HAN EVER SINCE THE BIRTH OF MODERN ARCHAEOLOGY in the nineteenth cen tury, nationalism and politics have been important factors in its development, and as such, archaeologists in various parts of the world have been actively in volved in the construction of ethnic and/or national origins and identities, the corroboration of national myths, the disputes over territories and cultural inven tions, and so on (Diaz-Andreu and Champion 1996; Hudson 1999; Kohl and Fawcett 1995; Meskell 1998; Pai 2000; Silberman 1989; Trigger 1984). Although it is difficult to find a single country in which archaeology is completely free from the influence of nationalism and politics, it is understandable to find that archae ologists operating in authoritarian systems generally have a stronger tendency to develop a close relationship with the nation-state and involve themselves in poli tics because of a lack of academic freedom and independent sources of financial support. Nazi Germany, early twentieth-century Japan, and pre-World War II Soviet Union are extreme examples of the politicization of archaeology (Arnold and Hassman 1995; Hudson 1999: 35, 44; Shnirelman 1996; Trigger 1989: 178 179; Wiwjorra 1996). In post-war Asia, archaeologists in China and Viet Nam were actively engaged in the development of a new wave of nationalist archaeol ogy under the encouragement and sponsorship of the state (Glover 1999; Tong 1995). ' This paper intends to study the nationalist archaeology of China and Viet Nam in the 1970s and 1980s. -

Vietnam Social Sciences, No. 4(168) - 2015 Ethnic Groups of Viet – Muong Languages and Dong Son Culture Bui Xuan Dinh * Abstract: The archaeological data have convincingly proved that the Dong Son (Đông Sơn) culture resulted from the indigenous development of the previous pre-Đông Sơn cultural systems in the basins of the Hồng, Mã and Cả rivers, closely associating people and ancient Vietnamese culture. The ethnological and linguistic data demonstrate the close relationship of language and culture between the Việt and Mường peoples, and other ethnic groups of Viet – Muong (Việt – Mường) language. There are a lot of convincing data to confirm that the Việt and Mường peoples once shared an origin and they themselves were the owners of the pre-Đông Sơn and Đông Sơn cultures, closely connected with the ancient Vietnamese civilization. Key words: Ethnic, Việt – Mường languages, Đông Sơn culture. 1. Nativeness and continuity of the - The owners of Phùng Nguyên Culture cultures during the period from Phùng were direct ancestors of Mường people in Nguyên to Đông Sơn culture Vietnam. One of the critical resources that the feudal government in Cochinchina smartly enlisted and attracted is the Chinese immigrant groups living in Vietnam. The Mandala Culture of Anarchy: The Pre-Colonial Southeast Asian International Society Pandu Utama Manggala Australian National University, Australia Abstract Throughout the years, study on pre-colonial Southeast Asian international relations has not garnered major attention because it had long been seen as an integral part of the China- centred tribute system. There is a need to provide greater understanding of the uniqueness of the international system as different regions have different ontologies to comprehend its dynamics and structures. This paper contributes to the pre-colonial Southeast Asian literature by examining the interplay that had existed between pre-colonial Southeast Asian empires and the hierarchical East Asian international society, in particular during the 13th- 16th Century. The paper argues that Southeast Asian international relations in pre-colonial time were characterized by complex political structures with the influence of Mandala values. In that structural context, the Majapahit Empire, one of the biggest empires at that time had its own constitutional structures of an international society, albeit still sought close relations with China. Studies on Asia Book Review The Cham of Vietnam: History, Society and Art edited by Trần Kỳ Phương and Bruce M. Lockhart (Singapore: NUS Press, 2011. Pp 460 ISBN: 978-9971-69-459-3) Bookended by the penetrating and sweeping historiographical analyses of Michael Vickery and Bruce Lockhart (ARI and NUS), the contributors to this volume have broken new ground in scholarship on Cham studies, which, as Lockhart writes “pose[s] a thorny and awkward problem for scholars of Vietnam” (1). These original peoples (Dân Tộc Bản Địa) were at one time the dominant cultural force in the territory of the contemporary Vietnamese state before they were reduced to a culturally significant, yet comparatively small, minority population (Dân Tộc Tiểu Số). To move beyond this problem, Lockhart’s essay “Colonial and Post-Colonial Constructions of Champa” enlightens our understanding of French Orientalist and Vietnamese scholars who have seen Champa “From Hà Nội” and “From Saigon.” Lockhart develops some of the latest trends in scholarship on Champa, which include a greater emphasis on Cham as equally in contact with both the Indic and the Sinitic spheres and a greater emphasis on the unique vestiges (di tích) of Cham culture. With new archeological analysis provided by Ian Glover, Nguyễn Kim Dung, Yamagata Mariko, William Southworth, Allison Diem, Trần Kỳ Phương, John Guy, and Thành Phần, this volume fills in gaps in one of Southeast Asia’s most complex and incomplete records. Evidence is compiled such that a cultural continuity is delineated through the Neolithic record of the Sa Huynh, the early kingdom of Lín Yì, the apogee of the highly Indianized negara of Vijaya, and the last independent negara Panduranga, which overlaps with the homeland of the contemporary Cham Balamon Hindu and Bani Muslim populations of Bình Thuận and Ninh Thuận provinces. -

June 2012 JICA Vietnam Office Preface JICA’s Cooperation for the Development of Central Vietnam Since Japan started its Official Development Assistance (ODA) to Vietnam in 1992, JICA has actively worked to support improvement of infrastructure, human resource development and institutional reforms, through financial and technical cooperation for contributing to Vietnam’s socio-economic development. JICA focuses on the Central region such as Da Nang and neighboring provinces along with the Northern region around Hanoi and the Southern region around Ho Chi Minh City, so as to contribute to a well balanced development of whole Vietnam. The focus of infrastructure improvement in Central Vietnam has two aspects. Those are strengthening the connection of the North-South axis and the upgrading East-West Economic Corridor. In strengthening the North-South axis, JICA has focused on rehabilitation of major bridges on National Highway No.1(NH1) and the Hanoi-HCMC railway lines. They have long been in need of repair since they were targeted and devastated during the Resistance War Against America. In upgrading East-West Corridor, focus of attention is the construction of Hai Van Tunnel. Physically and psychologically this is one of the monumental projects, which links the northern half of Vietnam with the southern half, and also connects the inland regions with the port facilities at Da Nang, thus dramatically improves the logistics side of the business environment in Central Vietnam. Central Vietnam is also prone to natural disasters, which is adding to its issues of increasing disparities. Focus of attention is given to capacity development and building disaster resilient societies so that the residents will be able to stand on its own feet long after the cooperation is completed. -
