IROQUOIA FALL HIKES 2014 Iroquoia End to End (Wednesdays) Let’s hike the Iroquois section as an End-to-End, once a month, for 10 “easy” hikes! Most of the hikes will be approx. 12 km. long, with a few exceptions. We will start in September, 2014 and finish in June, 2015 (weather permitting). Hikes are listed as E2E1, E2E2, etc. Hikes are listed in the Hikers R Us section of this newsletter. In the case of inclement weather (in the winter), we’ll do a substitute hike in the Cambridge area and a make-up hike at a later date. *Please make sure you RSVP, so your leader can notify you about any last minute changes. Leader: RSVP: [email protected] 519-654-0282. EVERY WEDNESDAY NIGHT CULHAM TRAIL MISSISSAUGA 1.5 - 2 hrs Brisk pace. Meet at Riverwood Visual Arts Centre in Mississauga. The centre is located just north of Burnhamthorpe Rd. between Mississauga Rd and Creditview Rd on Riverwood Park Lane. We will meet at 6:00 pm. in the parking lot at the top of the hill and hike along the Culham trail. Hike is cancelled if there is heavy rain. Leader: Nancy Stevens [email protected] EVERY WEDNESDAY NIGHT starts Aug. 27 - Walk for Health and Fun (1.5hrs at a Moderate to Fast Pace) Climb the steps and walk the streets and trails of West Hamilton. Meet at 7:10 pm. at the corner of Mohawk and Upper Paradise in the Westcliffe Mall parking lot (near Food Basics). Come along for a brisk, aerobic walk. Hike is cancelled if there is heavy rain. We will continue hiking sections of the Bruce Trail as long as daylight permits. Meet at Lions Club Pool Parking Lot, off Main St., just west of Mountain St. lights. Hike cancelled in poor weather. Hike Difficulty, Med. Wear appropriate footwear and bring water. Sometimes uneven terrain, hike routes to be varied. Optional pub stop after hike. Meet at 7:30 pm. in the Lakeshore Road parking lot just east of the Waterfront Centre and restaurant for abrisk walk along Lake Ontario, to the canal and back. Hike cancelled in poor weather. Pace - brisk. Terrain - easy. Leader: Lorne Carruthers. For information call Lorne at 905-315-8762 or email: [email protected] FEATURE HIKE Christmas Lunch and Hike (Everyone is welcome)! Nov. 25 Al and Barb Hutchison would like to invite all Bruce Trail hikers and anyone that hiked with the slowpokes to come to a Christmas lunch and hike. The hike will start at Shell Park on the Lakeshore Rd. east of Burloak Drive in Oakville at 10:00 am. The hike is an hour and a half. The lunch will be at Tuckers Market Place on the South Service Road near Guelph Line in Burlington at 12:00 noon. We have reserved a room for the group and you must call Barb 905.639.1771 to register by November 18 so that she can confirm the numbers. This will be a great opportunity to mix and mingle with old and new friends. The hike will be on some trails, some street walking and some by the lake. In case of bad weather we will still have the lunch. GENERAL HIKES Thurs. Sept. 4 - Tyandaga Evening Walk - 6 km. (1.5 hrs) Meet at 7:00 pm at Kerncliff Park (old quarry) parking lot on Kerns Road, Burlington. Hike sections of the Bruce Trail and side trails while still light. Directions: Take Brant Street north, left on North Service Road to Kerns Road. Go North on Kerns Road to below the escarpment. Parking lot entrance is on your right. Please be aware that you no longer can come south on Kerns Road from Dundas Street. Hike Cancelled if there is heavy rain. Pace: Medium. Terrain: Moderate. This 17 km. shuttle hike will take approximately 5 hours and is at a medium pace over strenuous terrain. Map 8. There is no dropout point. No dogs please. Depart: 9:00 am. Tiffany Falls parking lot, at km 45.0, Wilson Street E, Ancaster. GPS Coordinates: N43 14.437', W79 57.592' Directions: Hike Description: An opportunity to visit Webster's Falls, Tews Falls, Canterbury Falls, Sherman Falls, and Tiffany Falls, all in the same hike. Parking fee required at the Conservation Area. Remember to bring a snack lunch, 2 litres of drinking water, sunscreen and insect repellent. Meet for a 9:30 am. start in the parking lot of Chedoke Golf Club in the west end of Hamilton, off Aberdeen Avenue next to Hwy. 403. Go to the far east end of the parking area, facing the golf course (look for “Chedoke Park” on Map 8 of the Bruce Trail Reference Guide, near km. 37.7). We’ll hike up the Chedoke Radial Trail into Iroquoia Heights Conservation Area, looping around trails, then return. One of the most populated deer areas in Hamilton. Sept. 6 - 11 km BEST OF NIAGARA - WINERY & TASTING HIKES Meet at 10:00 am. at Mike Weir Wine parking lot, 4041 Locust Lane Beamsville. Carpool to Vineland Estate Winery, 3620 Moyer Rd. Vineland. Sept. 6 - Car Hike, Avon Trail (Map 1) - 23 km. Depart 8:30 am. Avon Trail Map 1, Km. 0.0. From Toronto 401 west. Turn on Hwy 7/8 to St Marys, turn right on Rd. 123 Water St, to parking lot behind tennis court across from old quarries. Car shuttle to Km. 23.0. Map 2, Line 33. Hike back along north shore of Wildwood Lake and across country to St Marys. No dropouts,End to End #1 of 6. Pace: Brisk. Terrain: Moderate. Leader: Ron Granger, (519) 485-0879 7-10 pm. Sun. Sept. 7 - Car Hike, Avon Trail (Map 2) - 23 km. Depart 8:30 am. Avon Trail, Map 3, Km 45.5. Toronto West to Hwy 7/8 west to St. Marys and Stratford. Road side parking on junction of Rd 110 and 7/8. No dropouts, End to End #2 of 6, Hiking boots, no dogs. Pace: Brisk. Terrain: Moderate. Leader: Ron Granger, (519) 485-0879 7-10 pm. Sun. Sept. 7 - Gentle hike at Mountsberg Conservation - +/- 4km Meet at 10:30 am. at Mountsberg Conservation Area in the parking area. From Highway 6 or Guelph Line follow Campbellville Road to Milburough Line and then go north for 1 km to park entrance. Halton Conservation Area pass or entrance fee applies. This is a loop walk. BEST OF NIAGARA - WINERY & TASTING HIKES Meet at 10:00 am. at Rosewood Estate Winery & Meadery parking lot, 4352 Mountainview Rd. ( south of King St) Beamsville. Carpool to Tawse Winery, 3955 Cherry Rd. Vineland. Hike back. Meet for a 9:30 am. start in the parking lot below the school in Limehouse on 22 Sideroad, west of Trafalgar Road or east off of Highway 25. (Be careful if using 22 Sideroad coming from Highway 25. It has a break in it at Fourth Line.) Map 12. We will car pool back to Peartree Parking Lot on Sideroad 15, west of Highway 25 at Speyside. Pace - Medium. Meet for a 9:00 am. start from the Zehrs Parking lot at Fischer Hallman Rd. N. and Erb St. Waterloo. Schneider’s Farm Waterloo is on the Waterloo Moraine and is “The Best Kept Secret in Waterloo”. Good trails through rolling hills - left by the last glacier. Great hike for kids, drop out at half way point if needed. Pace- medium. Terrain - moderate. Leader: Greg Vincent 519.579.8210 [email protected] Sun. Sept. 14 - Eramosa Karst - 5-6 km. Meet at 10:00 am. at Valley Park on Paramount Drive, south of Mud St. in East Hamilton Mountain. We will do a loop hike of the Eramosa Karst, via a neighborhood trail. Pace - medium. Terrain - moderate. Map 7. Leader: Vern Erickson 905-667-4370, [email protected]. Tues. Sept. 16 - East Burlington Evening Walk - 5 km (1.5 hrs) Meet at 7:00 pm. at the SW corner of Appleby Mall parking lot on New Street and Appleby Line (By the Beer Store). Hike various streets and trails including the bike path and Sherwood Forest Park.
