2 NATURE ON THE TRAIL

Imagine coming across this little fellow…a saw whet owl, only about 7 inches high! And also having your camera at the ready! Such was the delightful experience of Sean Morton and Sonya Richmond, the Land Steward team for our Dopko property ,near the Grimsby boundary of Iroquoia. Such an event is one of the bonuses of volunteering to be a Land Steward for the BTC. As most members know by now, the BTC is continuing work to guarantee a conservation corridor all the way along the , containing a public footpath. Part of that effort involves purchasing and managing key properties. The BTC currently manages over 200 such properties, 17 of which are in Iroquoia, and we have Stewards/Steward Teams covering all of these properties. The Stewardship process is as follows. Each property has been studied in detail by BTC Staff, who prepare a Stewardship Plan, which is the basis of the Land Steward’s regular duties. Stewards are required to visit their properties and report to their Land Steward Director at least twice per year. These site visits involve inspection of the overall property (not just the Trail area itself) and especially property boundaries, for it is there that issues often occur. Unlike a city property, the boundaries of these properties are not always obvious, so appropriately determining and marking boundaries, and posting signage, are the first duties of the Land Steward. After that, the Steward can begin to work on Recommendations and other aspects of the Stewardship Plan, including observations on the wildlife and vegetation of the Property. And one may be skilled enough to capture a memorable image like our saw whet owl above!

TRAILS TO THE PAST - BY Paul Toffoletti

By the spring of 1965, the Bruce Trail was now open and blazed from Mount Albion to Guelph Line. The push was on to reach Centennial Parkway. Trail work has started in a spotty manner in Stoney Creek and Grimsby as Landowner approvals were still being sought. Another work party mulled over three possible routes to get to Mount Nemo and beyond. I found a few interesting notes in the Iroquoia minutes from fall 1964 to spring 1965. The BTA Board turned down a proposal to name a section of trail after John F. Kennedy. The BTA Board also discussed and turned down having a paid Secretary and Trail Director. The Hamilton Chamber of Commerce produced a film to promote the “Iroquoia Tourist Region” and include the Bruce Trail. Our Club was named after the name of the Tourist Region. It would be great to find this footage. In the April 1965 Issue of Walkie Talkie a song called “The Bruce Trail Song”, written by Walter Hickling and premiered on January 29th at the winter meeting, was published. The song was popular, as people would sing it as a group while out hiking. 50 years later we are proud to re-publish the song by sheet music and words. Sing your heart out on your next hike.

THE BRUCE TRAIL SONG (words line by line) Were the pioneers of this age. Yes the walking bit is quite the rage. With a desire too. Won’t you join up? (Illegible part). Where the beech and pine and maple grow along , the mountain edge. Iroquoia will blaze a trail, to this, we give our pledge. Building here a bridge, there a stile, never do we pause. Crossing Hill and stream, this is our dream, and the Bruce Trail is our cause.

8 NEW YEAR’S DAY 2015

Each New Year’s day Iroquoia offers hikes to its members and to the general public. It is a good way to start the New Year and a time when our members can meet, hike and enjoy refreshments. It is also an opportunity to introduce members of the public to our club and to the joys and benefits of hiking. New Year’s Day 2015 did that and more. 173 participants came out to enjoy the day. Although the weather was cold and very windy, no one seemed to mind. Old friendships were renewed and new ones made. After a little chaos at the beginning to match participants with leaders, hikers were off to the trails. At least one group waited while latecomers made their way to the Trail Centre where all hikes started and ended. At the conclusion of the hikes participants enjoyed refreshment and some were lucky to go home with door prizes. My thanks to all who helped in any way: hike leaders, refreshment providers and especially to Maureen Hills who organized the day’s events and helped out with publicity and door prizes.
