It includes considerations on how the carved objects affected and played a role in Dorset social life. To consider the role of people, things and other beings that may be said to play as actors in interdependent entanglements of actions, the agency/actor- network theory is employed. From this theoretical review an interpretation of social life as created by the ways people interact with the material world is presented. This framework is employed as a lens into the social role and meaning the carvings played in the Dorset society. The examined assemblages were recovered from a series of Dorset settlement sites, mainly in house, midden, and burial contexts, providing a substantive case study through which variations and themes of carvings are studied. Over 1000 Dorset carvings are systematically interpreted and presented to identify various details and patterning including types, forms, subject matter, and raw material selection, as well as temporal and spatial distribution. These carvings are represented in miniaturized portable portrayals depicting animal, human, and tool implements, along with utilitarian object pieces elaborated with incised ornamentation, including petroglyphs with various depictions of human-like face engravings. The images portrayed exhibit representations of different individual beings/agents that shared the same environment and formed the daily basis of economic and social frameworks including material products that were integral to the human condition. The carvings are depicted in realistic forms of expression both in attitude and movement. They exhibit different behavioral situations and subject matter suggesting carvings operated as material symbols that played a role in communicating aspects of Dorset ideology. This research suggests that a clear change occurred in the subject matter chosen to depict in the carvings throughout the Dorset culture temporally divided into Early, Middle, and Late Dorset periods. The general progress of subject choice shows that during the Early Dorset period, miniaturized tool carvings had a more important role in depictions, whereas during the Middle Dorset period general emphasis on the animal subject are dominantly exhibited and during the Late Dorset period the human subject becomes highly important to display. The changes in the focus of the subject matter seem to suggest that ideological and social engagements and practices important to Dorset people shifted through time. The systematically collected data of the carvings are integrated with analogies based on observations of other cultures from across the circumpolar region to assist with parallel perspectives. The different forms of artistic carvings reflect dynamic daily activities among agents. The analyses of which suggest that socially constructed practices are culturally transmitted among the Dorset people over the course of time. The various portrayals of animal and human depictions along with ornamented utilitarian tools and miniature implements reflect an ontology that focused on relational manner where human, object, and animal worlds existed as reciprocal entities exerting influence in Dorset social life and ideology. ii EQIKKAANEQ Uani ilisimatusaatitut allaaserisami misissorneqarput Dorset-kulturimi sanalulluni qiperueriaatsit assigiinngitsut. Dorset-kulturen var et arktisk jæger-samler folk, som levede i de østlige arktiske og subarktiske områder af Canada og i Grønland fra omkring 800 f.Kr. – 1300 e.Kr. Det er afhandlingens formål at undersøge, hvorledes de udskårne genstande påvirkede og spillede en rolle i det sociale liv. Den valgte teoretiske tilgang er agency/aktør-netværks teori. Ud fra denne teoretiske tilgang præsenteres en fortolkning af det sociale liv, som skabes af de måder mennesker interagerer med den materielle verden. Både ting, mennesker og andre skabninger spiller en rolle i det sociale liv og kan siges at være aktører i gensidigt afhængige relationer. Denne teoretiske ramme bruges som vindue ind til den sociale rolle og betydning, som udskæringerne spillede i Dorset-kulturens samfund. Genstandsmaterialet, der danner grundlag for undersøgelsen, stammer hovedsageligt fra hustomter, møddinger og grave fra en række Dorset bopladser. Der er tale om et substantielt materialegrundlag, som gør det muligt at studere variationer og temaer i udskæringerne. Mere end 1000 Dorset udskæringer fortolkes og præsenteres systematisk med henblik på at identificere variationer af detaljer og mønstre, herunder typer, former, materialevalg samt udbredelse i tid og rum. Udskæringerne udgør miniaturegenstande, der i form skildrer dyr, mennesker og redskaber samt brugsgenstande med indridsede ornamenter. Derudover er der petroglyffer med forskellige afbildninger af menneskelignende ansigter indgraveret i fedtstensforekomster. It is the only member of the deer family (Cervidae) found on the Queen Elizabeth Islands (QEI) of the Canadian High Arctic. The Peary caribou is a significant part of the region's biodiversity and a socially important and economically valuable part of Arctic Canada's natural heritage. Recent microsatellite DNA findings indicate that Peary caribou on the QEI are distinct from caribou on the other Arctic Islands beyond the QEI, including Banks Island. This fact must be kept in mind if any translocation of caribou to the QEI is pro• posed. The subspecies is too gross a level at which to recognize the considerable diversity that exists between Peary cari¬ bou on the QEI and divergent caribou on other Canadian Arctic Islands. The Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada should take this considerable diversity among these caribou at below the subspecies classification to mind when assigning conservation divisions (units) to caribou on the Canadian Arctic Islands.

    198 13. Repulse Bay. This is an important summer area for seals (Canadian Wildlife Service 1972) and a primary seal-hunting area for Repulse Bay. 14. Roes Welcome Sound. This is an important concentration area for ringed seals and an important hunting area for Repulse Bay. Marine traffic, materials staging, and construction of the crossing could displace seals or degrade their habitat. 15. Southampton-Coats Island. The southern coastal area of Southampton Island is an important concentration area for ringed seals and is the primary ringed and bearded seal hunting area for the Coral Harbour Inuit. Fisher and Evans Straits and all coasts of Coats Island are important seal-hunting areas in late summer and early fall. Marine traffic, materials staging, and construction of the crossing could displace seals or degrade their habitat. 16.7.2 Communities Affected Communities that could be affected by impacts on seal populations are Resolute and, to a lesser degree, Spence Bay, Chesterfield Inlet, and Gjoa Haven. Effects on Arctic Bay would be minor. Coral Harbour and Repulse Bay could be affected if the Quebec route were chosen. Seal meat makes up the most important part of the diet in Resolute, Spence Bay, Coral Harbour, Repulse Bay, and Arctic Bay. It is a secondary, but still important food in Chesterfield Inlet and Gjoa Haven. Seal skins are an important source of income for Spence Bay, Resolute, Coral Harbour, Repulse Bay, and Arctic Bay and a less important income source for Chesterfield Inlet and Gjoa Haven. 16.7.3 Data Gaps Major data gaps concerning impacts on seal populations are: 1.

The eleven year dataset was used to identify and measure locations with a high probability of open water occurrence. This approach appears to be most suitable for the spring months, when polynyas and shore leads represent the only open water in the region. An analysis of the results at several geographic scales reveals considerable yearly variation in polynya extents, although the relatively short period studied makes identifying trends rather difficult.     - The Arctic Region of Disko - Early Colonisation of Disko by Peter Chapman Mountain Environment Early Colonisation of Disko The Arctic Region of Disko he first people to venture into the arctic were the Palaeo-Eskimo. Their movement into the arctic, which originated from the Bering Strait area between Siberia and Alaska, resulted in tact with them T perfecting methods for hunting marine animals throughout the year in the arctic conditions. This group of early Palaeo-Eskimos are known internationally as the Arctic Small Tool tradition (ASTt). Common to them are the small stone-tipped implements they used to survive. These Stone Age people spread along the northern coast of Alaska and Canada to Greenland in less than 100 years - an amazing speed considering the few numbers of people and the enormous distances involved. Their settlements where located close to their hunting grounds, either right on the coast by the sea ice, or along inlets from where they hunted land mammals such as reindeer (caribou) and muskoxen. Today, traces of these settlements are found on fossil terraces a little inland and often 30 to 40 metres above sea level due to continuing post glacial uplift of the land and changes in sea level since the time of inhabitation. The archaeologist Robert McGhee wrote that these people migrated into “the coldest, darkest and most barren regions ever inhabited by man”. Indeed, they were very bold to do so both in terms of coping with the harshness of the climate but also because of the psychological nature of their endeavours. The early Palaeo-Eskimo people who populated the arctic archipelago of Canada are called the Pre-Dorset Culture and two cultures populated areas of Greenland’s coast for the first time around 2400 BC.

Ferguson Version: 23 December 2016 1Department of Environment, Government of Nunavut, Box 209 Igloolik NU X0A 0L0 STATUS REPORT 2016-08 NUNAVUT DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENT WILDLIFE RESEARCH SECTION IGLOOLIK, NU i Summary Eleven muskoxen (Ovibos moschatus) were fitted with satellite collars in summer 2003 to investigate habitat preferences and movement parameters in areas where they are sympatric with Peary caribou on Bathurst, Cornwallis, and Devon islands. Collars collected locations every 4 days until May 2006, with 4 muskoxen on Bathurst Island collared, 2 muskoxen collared on Cornwallis Island, and 5 muskoxen collared on western Devon Island. Only 5-29% of the satellite locations were associated with an estimated error of less than 150 m (Argos Class 3 locations). Muskoxen in this study used low-lying valleys and coastal areas with abundant vegetation on all 3 islands, in agreement with previous studies in other areas and Inuit qaujimajatuqangit. They often selected tussock graminoid tundra, moist/dry non-tussock graminoid/dwarf shrub tundra, wet sedge, and sparsely vegetated till/colluvium sites. Minimum convex polygon home ranges representing 100% of the locations with <150 m error include these movements between core areas, and ranged from 233 km2 to 2494 km2 for all collared muskoxen over the 3 years, but these home ranges include large areas of unused habitat separating discrete patches of good habitat where most locations were clustered. Several home ranges overlapped, which is not surprising, since muskoxen are not territorial.

Maury Channel To: The Nunavut Planning Commission From: The Qikiqtaaluk Wildlife Board (QWB), and the Hunters and Trappers Organization (HTO) of Resolute Bay Background Information: Multiple resources are highly valued by the Inuit of Resolute Bay in four areas (i.e., Multiple Value Areas, MVAs). One of these areas (MVA 36A) is a marine area with islands close to the hamlet of Resolute Bay, and includes Allen Bay and Resolute Passage. MVA 36B is a terrestrial and marine area on southeastern Bathurst Island and western McDougall Sound. MVA 36C is a terrestrial area on southwestern Bathurst Island, and MVA 36D is a marine area north of Cornwallis Island in Maury Channel. Without protection of these four areas, plus others, the Nunavut Land Use Plan will fail in its goal to protect and promote the well-being of all of Nunavut’s residents as a primary purpose of land use planning under Article 11 of the Nunavut Agreement. All of these MVAs are important community harvesting areas for wildlife, including but not limited to: ringed, bearded and harp seals, beluga, narwhal, bowhead, walrus, Peary caribou, muskoxen, wolves, snow geese, brant, common and king eiders, Arctic char, and polar bears. All of these areas are critically important to maintain the health, culture and heritage of the Inuit of Resolute Bay. 1 Industrial development in or near these areas would degrade their value.
