What is the role of the GN in issuing wildlife research permits? On June 1, 1999, Nunavut became Canada’s newest territory. Since its creation, interest in studying its natural resources has steadily risen. Human demands on animals and plants can leave them vulnerable, and wildlife research permits allow the Department to keep records of what, and how much research is going on in Nunavut, and to use this as a tool to assist in the conservation of its resources. The four primary purposes of research in Nunavut are: a. To help ensure that communities are informed of scientific research in and around their communities; b. To maintain a centralized knowledgebase of research activities in Nunavut; c. To ensure that there are no conflicting or competing research activities in Nunavut; and d. To ensure that wildlife research activities abide by various laws and regulations governing the treatment and management of wildlife and wildlife habitat in Nunavut. 2. How is this process supported by the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement? Conservation: Article 5.1.5 The principles of conservation are: a. the maintenance of the natural balance of ecological systems within the Nunavut Settlement Area; b. the protection of wildlife habitat; c. the maintenance of vital, healthy, wildlife populations capable of sustaining harvesting needs as defined in this article; and d. the restoration and revitalization of depleted populations of wildlife and wildlife habitat. -

EXAMINING PRECONTACT INUIT GENDER COMPLEXITY AND ITS DISCURSIVE POTENTIAL FOR LGBTQ2S+ AND DECOLONIZATION MOVEMENTS by Meghan Walley B.A. McGill University, 2014 A thesis submitted to the School of Graduate Studies In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Department of Archaeology Memorial University of Newfoundland May 2018 St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador 0 ABSTRACT Anthropological literature and oral testimony assert that Inuit gender did not traditionally fit within a binary framework. Men’s and women’s social roles were not wholly determined by their bodies, there were mediatory roles between masculine and feminine identities, and role-swapping was—and continues to be—widespread. However, archaeologists have largely neglected Inuit gender diversity as an area of research. This thesis has two primary objectives: 1) to explore the potential impacts of presenting queer narratives of the Inuit past through a series of interviews that were conducted with Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer/Questioning and Two-Spirit (LGBTQ2S+) Inuit and 2) to consider ways in which archaeological materials articulate with and convey a multiplicity of gender expressions specific to pre-contact Inuit identity. This work encourages archaeologists to look beyond categories that have been constructed and naturalized within white settler spheres, and to replace them with ontologically appropriate histories that incorporate a range of Inuit voices. Filiberto, analyzed at any other landing site. Therefore, the magmas that gave rise to these rocks may have been fi[email protected] generated at significantly different conditions in the Martian mantle than those derived from previously studied rocks. Here we build upon our previous models of basalt formation based on rocks analyzed in Citation: Gusev Crater and Meridiani Planum to the new models of basalt formation for compositions from Gale Filiberto, J., and R. Dasgupta (2015), Crater and a clast in meteorite NWA 7034. Estimates for the mantle potential temperature, TP based on Constraints on the depth and thermal vigor of melting in the Martian mantle, Noachian age rock analyses in Gale Crater, Gusev Crater, and Bounce Rock in Meridiani Planum, and a J. Geophys. Res. Planets, 120, vitrophyre clast in NWA 7034 are within error, which suggests that the calculated average TP of 1450 ± 70°C doi:10.1002/2014JE004745. -

The terms of reference of these investetions are (1) to study the physical and biological oceanography of the eastern arctic and (2) to discover, if possible, marine resources which may be developed by and for the native population, Results obtained in Ungava bay during the 1949 season are listed in Dr. Dunbar's report, under these headings: (1) a. Sections were made from Burwell to Akpatok, from Akpatok to Payne bay, and from Akpatok to the mouth of the Koksoak river. Salinities, temperatures and oxygen concentrations were measured (the salinities not yet determined at time of writing). The sections were made in mid-July and one section, that from Payne bay to Akpatok, was repeated late in August in order to show the changes during the summer months* b, Echo-sounder tracks were recorded and kept from regions in Ungava bay where soundings are very incomplete, c. The study of the biology and distribution of the plankton, benthos and littoral fauna was continued, by the addition to the already large collections (from 1947 and 1948) of material from deeper water and from other areas than were possible to reach in the first two seasons. An effort was also made to collect micro-organisms by centrifuging methods. d. Experimental fishing for codfish, shark and flatfish, by hand line and by long lino trawl was continued. -
Canadian Arctic Tide Measurement Techniques and Results

STEPHENSON (*) ABSTRACT About 10 years ago the Canadian Hydrographic Service recognized the need for a planned approach to completing tide and current surveys of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago in order to meet the requirements of marine shipping and construction industries as well as the needs of environmental studies related to resource development. Therefore, a program of tidal surveys was begun which has resulted in a data base of tidal records covering most of the Archipelago. In this paper the problems faced by tidal surveyors and others working in the harsh Arctic environment are described and the variety of equipment and techniques developed for short, medium and long-term deployments are reported. The tidal characteris tics throughout the Archipelago, determined primarily from these surveys, are briefly summarized. It was also recognized that there would be a need for real time tidal data by engineers, surveyors and mariners. Since the existing permanent tide gauges in the Arctic do not have this capability, a project was started in the early 1980’s to develop and construct a new permanent gauging system. The first of these gauges was constructed during the summer of 1985 and is described. INTRODUCTION The Canadian Arctic Archipelago shown in Figure 1 is a large group of islands north of the mainland of Canada bounded on the west by the Beaufort Sea, on the north by the Arctic Ocean and on the east by Davis Strait, Baffin Bay and Greenland and split through the middle by Parry Channel which constitutes most of the famous North West Passage.
