Hani Shukrallah

Executive Director of the Heikal Foundation for Arab Journalism; Former Chief Editor of Al-Shorouk; Founder and Former Chief Editor of Ahram Online

Hani Shukrallah is Senior Consultant to the Al-Ahram Chairman for Editorial Web Development, in charge of overall management and development of all Al-Ahram Establishment’s online publications and products (June 2014-present). He writes a weekly column (in Arabic) for the daily Al-Ahram. He is also Senior Editorial Consultant with Welad Elbalad Media Services (issues 9 local weekly newspapers around the country). He is former Managing Editor of 's top newspaper, the daily Al-Ahram; the founder and former Chief Editor of Ahram Online, the English-language news web portal published by the Al-Ahram organization. Ahram Online has published numerous op-ed articles, news analysis and interviews by Shukrallah, including his 9-part series: A People’s History of the Egyptian Revolution. During 2008 and 2009 he was founding co-Chief Editor of the Egyptian daily, Al-Shorouk, for which he wrote a weekly column in Arabic. He is also the former Executive Director of the -based Heikal Foundation for Arab Journalism and former Managing Editor, then Chief Editor of the English language, Al-Ahram Weekly (1991-2005).

He wrote a regular column for Al-Ahram Weekly for more than 10 years, and has also written for Britain’s Guardian newspaper, Outlook, (India), Al-Hayat (), and the Journal of Palestine Studies. Shukrallah also served as Senior Research Consultant with the Al Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies, one of the leading think tanks in the Middle East (2005-2008), and was a visiting lecturer at the University of California, Berkeley, in the (spring semester 2006). He is a founding member of the Egyptian Organization for Human Rights, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Arab Network for Human Rights Information, and a board member of the Center for Arab and African Studies in Cairo. Shukrallah is the author of “Egypt, the Arabs and the World: Reflections at the Turn of the Twenty-First Century”, AUC Press, Cairo. He has also written “A People’s History of the Egyptian Revolution” (serialized on Ahram Online).
