Page 2 |October 6, 2019 PASTOR'S WEEKLY MESSAGE

27th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C, October 6th, 2019 Rose Kennedy was the mother of the Kennedy clan, which included John Kennedy who went on to become President of the United States. She was a woman of great faith. And how she needed that faith! She saw two of her sons assassinated. Speaking about faith, she said in an interview on one occasion: “I have come to the conclusion that the most important element in human life is faith. If were to take away all the blessings, health, wealth, intelligence, and leave me with just one gift, I would ask for faith – because with faith in God, in His goodness, mercy, love for me, and belief in everlasting life, I believe I could still be happy, trustful, leaving all to God’s inscrutable providence. It is impossible to exaggerate the value of faith. Faith gives meaning to life. Faith is trust, not certainty. And faith doesn’t shield us from the hard knocks of life or death. Faith keeps us going in difficult times. In the gospel, the disciples asked Jesus to increase their faith. The response of Jesus was that they only needed faith the size of a mustard seed. Mahatma Gandhi once said, “Those with a grain of faith never lose hope.” When I visited the Holy Land few years ago, I was privileged to see mustard seeds for the first time. It is a tiny seed, not the smallest of all seeds but certainly one of the smallest. Jesus needs only the littlest faith from us in order to use it for something big. That is why St. Paul reminded Timothy not to let go of the faith he received. No matter how small it appears, if he fans it, the little amber of fire will get bigger and his faith will grow. Many of us can ask Jesus for this same favor. Paul’s word of encouragement to young Timothy appeared to have come when Timothy was having difficulty with his life as a missionary. Paul reminded Timothy that the spirit he received was not a spirit of cowardice and that he must not be ashamed to testify to his faith. What a strong reminder of what we are to be doing in our world today. How long, O Lord? I cry for help but you do not listen! I cry out to you, “Violence!” but you do not intervene. Why do you let me see ruin; why must I look at misery? ( 1:2-3) These words sound more like a cry of despair and abandonment. There were bad and horrible things happening at the time of the Prophet Habakkuk. There was hatred, violence, and war. However, God does not abandon his people for he is the hope of the one who has faith in him. The prophet also spoke some reassuring words that God’s promises may seem to be late but it will come: “If it delays, wait for it, will surely come, it will not be late. The rash one has no integrity; but the just one, because of his faith, shall live” (Habakkuk 2:4). When we look around the world and around us, what do we see? Like in the time of Habakkuk, we may find things not going right. There is hatred, violence, war, terrorism and many other evil. There is not much respect for life. It is easy to get discouraged. Yet, the Christian is called not to lose hope but to have faith. Respect Life Sunday: Today being the first Sunday of October is Respect Life Sunday. The church invites each of us to think about the sanctity of life and pray for life in all its form. We are called to promote life from the moment of conception to natural death and all that is in between. The U.S. bishops in 1998 in Living the Gospel of Life said, “We must begin with a commitment never to intentionally kill, or be complicit in the killing of any innocent human life, no matter how broken, unformed, disabled or desperate that life may seem” (#20). The bishops also said: “To focus on the evil of deliberate killing in abortion and euthanasia is not to ignore the many other urgent conditions that demean human dignity and threaten hu- man rights. Opposing abortion and euthanasia does not excuse indifference to those who suffer from poverty, violence, and injustice. Any politics of human life must work to resist the violence of war and the scandal of capital punishment. Any politics of human dignity must seriously address issues of racism, poverty, hunger, employment, education, housing and health care" (#22). October, Month of Mary and the Rosary: The month of October is also the month of Mary and the Rosary. Mary, the mother of Jesus, is our model on the issues of life. She nurtured and cared for the baby in her womb even though she did not fully understand what was going to happen to her and how the child will affect her. She was there at the foot of the cross by the side of her son gazing lovingly but painfully at him before his death. I invite you all to pray the rosary this month for greater respect for the human life from conception to natural death. Let us not be discouraged. Let us keep praying for the conversion of those who do have no respect for life. Acknowledgment and Gratitude: I am very grateful to all of you, my dear parishioners and staff of the parish for the immense show of love and prayers on my birthday last week. I appreciate your presence and your presents. It was indeed a very happy day for me. Someone said on my birthday at 50, I am now over the cliff. My response is that I will stay on top of that cliff for a long time before descending. So help me God! You are my blessings, and I thank you all so much! Fr. Felix I. Osasona, MSP Pastor

Breaking Open the Word for Families for the 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time by Ginger Herrignton * Reading 1: The Lord promises: the just one, because of his faith, shall live. The prophet Habakkuk complains to the Lord that He seems not to listen. God reassures Habakkuk that He is, indeed listening, but He answers in His own time. We are called to cry out to the Lord in good times and in bad and then to wait patiently, confident that He loves us and will answer. We may not receive the answer we expect or want, but God knows what is best for us. We are called to accept His silence and His response in the faith that He knows us better than we know ourselves, and He knows what we need. The Lord loves us! Keep that good news in mind when you pray. * Reading 2: Paul encourages Timothy to cooperate with the grace he has been given. Paul exhorts Timothy to remember that in receiving the sacraments, Timothy has received graces from God: a spirit of power and love and self-control. Paul advises him to bear his share of hardship for the Gospel, for what does Jesus say to His disciples? “Pick up your cross and follow Me.” That cross is not meant to be easy, but we can rest easy knowing that the Holy Trinity help us to bear that cross. God makes possible what He asks of us, but we are to do our part. Does this sound like work? Sure it does! The state of our souls depend upon us working out our salvation. * Gospel: We have done what we were obliged to do. As Jesus ascended into Heaven, He charged His followers to “Love one another.” What exactly does this look like in your life? Remember the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy, excellent ways of loving our neighbor; in this way, we grow in faith and love for the Lord. Corporal: Feed the hungry; give drink to the thirsty; clothe the naked; shelter the homeless; visit the sick and those in prison; and bury the dead. Spiritual: Admonish sinners; instruct the ignorant; counsel the doubtful; bear wrongs patiently; forgive others willingly; comfort the afflicted and the sorrowful; and pray for the living and the dead. Keep your eyes on the prize - eternal happiness with God in Heaven – and work hard to win that prize. Scan the QR code with your smartphone To access the full and complete text.
