Dear Parishioners,

“Whoever eats my fl esh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him.” (John 6:57)

Last week we celebrated the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, which is not meant to simply be explained, but rather encountered as mystery. A mystery that is meant to be pondered so as to draw us into the mystery of God. Today we celebrate another Solemnity that is meant more to be pondered than explained. Th is Solemnity of Corpus Christi, or the Body and Blood of Christ, doesn’t need theological explanations; they will never be enough. What we need is faith and trust. Trust that the Word of Jesus is true.

Many Christians believe that Jesus was speaking metaphorically and not literally about His Body and Blood but rather He meant to feed on the “Word” that He came to preach. While the Word is certainly important and that understanding would be easier to accept, it is certainly NOT what Jesus intended. If it were, He would have clarifi ed His teaching when many who could not accept it turned away. What Jesus says is to reiterate more strongly His words and this teaching. After many leave Him, He turns to the Apostles and says, “Will you leave me too?” Th is would have been the opportune moment to explain a diff erent teaching to His Disciples so they would understand more clearly. Yet there is no other explanation off ered. So we conclude from this teaching and others in the Scriptures that Jesus does indeed want to give us His very Self as food for our journey. Jesus never said this is a symbol of my Body and Blood but rather IT IS My Body and Blood. Th is teaching has been believed and taught from the earliest days in the life of the Church. We share this continual believe in the Real and True presence of Jesus in the Eucharist with our Orthodox sisters and brothers. As the Churches founded by Jesus we have kept faithful to this beautiful yet diffi cult teaching. St. (c.110 A.D.) says, “Th e Eucharist is the Flesh of our Savior Jesus Christ, fl esh which suff ered for our sins and which the Father, in His goodness, raised up again.”

Like the Trinity, we again encounter mystery. Th eologians have attempted to help us grasp this mystery through the teaching of Transubstantiation. Th is states that the accidents (external presence) remain the same but their substance changes into the Body and Blood of Jesus. So bread still looks and tastes like bread but is in reality the Body of Christ. Th e same would be true for the accident of the wine and its change into the Blood of our Lord.

Again, this is helpful but falls short of the beauty of what Jesus intends. What we need is faith to see past the accidents and to believe what Jesus intends. Faith acknowledges this great and wondrous Sacrament so that He may become part of us, as food for our journey and that hopefully we become what we eat and drink...namely more like Jesus Himself. So, what do we believe? After the priest calls down the Holy Spirit on the gifts of bread and wine they truly BECOME the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Himself. Not a symbol, not a mirror of something else, BUT Jesus Himself. St. (c. 344 A.D.) addressing some who doubted and needed proof of this great Mystery says, “Some of you say, I wish I could see His shape, His appearance, His garments. Only look! You see Him! You touch Him! You eat Him! BELIEVE.” A great challenge for each of us. So as you come to receive Jesus in the Eucharist, do you ponder while walking up to communion that you will cradle in your hands or on your tongue the true Body and Blood of our Savior? Th is awesome and humbling gift is Jesus’ abiding presence to us.

We come to Mass to receive Jesus as Savior and Lord. Th e prayers and actions of the Liturgy help us to refocus and continue to acknowledge Jesus as Lord and to remind us that we gather to worship this wondrous presence among us. May we stand in awe at this mystery, BUT more importantly, may it cause us to seek Jesus and become more like Him whom we consume.

I encourage you to spend time with Our Lord Jesus present in the Tabernacle or at Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. It certainly helps us believe more deeply. By the way, as a reminder, exposition is off ered each Monday from 3-8pm in the Chapel. Come spend time with Jesus.

In Jesus, Our Eucharistic Lord, Fr. Bob Th e Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ | June 3, 2018 Stewards of God’s Gifts Th e Bishops’ stewardship pastoral asks, “And what do Christians bring to the Eucharistic celebration and join there with Jesus’ off ering?” Th e answer: “Th eir lives as Christian disciples; their personal vocations and the stewardship they have exercised regarding them…”.

We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who use their gift of time to receive the Body of Christ to become the Body of Christ through weekly Eucharist.

Church of Saint Mary | 6 Memorial Day 2018 This past weekend, many parishioners, clergy members, administrators, faculty, students and parents of The Schools of Saint Mary participated in Memorial Day activities commemorating the men and women of the US Armed Forces who gave the ultimate sacrifice defending our freedom.

On Saturday, May 26, members of the St. Mary’s High School Chamber Choir traveled to Maple Grove Cemetery in Kew Gardens, Queens to help place flags at the gravesites of veterans buried at the historic grounds. The group then led the Memorial Day Ceremony in prayer and song under the direction of Andrew Koslosky and Patrick White. On Monday, May 28 American Legion Post 304, Manhasset held their annual Memorial Day Parade along Plandome Road. St. Mary’s parish and school community proudly supported the Legion and was well represented with a large contingent marching the parade route. Fr. Jiha Lim stepped in time with the Knights of Columbus #2122, Squires, and the Columbiettes, and Fr. Jude Dioka joined the Respect Life Committee. Marching for the first time behind The Schools of Saint Mary banner was Dr. Joseph McCleary, president, Ms. Sarah de Venoge, principal of St. Mary’s Elementary School, Mr. Gerard Buckley, assistant principal of St. Mary’s High School, and faculty member, Mr. Joseph Ilnitzki. Together, they led the broad delegation of students and parents who were excited to be a part of the day. Immediately following the parade, the Memorial Day Ceremony held at Manhasset High School honored our fallen soldiers and paid special tribute to those veterans who died this past year. In the second half of the Ceremony, high school students received recognition during the presentation of school awards by officers of Post 304 and the Ladies Auxiliary. Congratulations to all of the exemplary young men and women of the parish and school community who won awards based on their academic abilities, Americanism, and service to others. Special thanks to the members of American Legion Post 304 and the Ladies Auxiliary, many of whom are parishioners, for their efforts to make such a patriotic and memorable day for all. Rosary Society “Take 20 minutes out of your day to pray the Rosary, and you will see the diff erence it will make in your life!” If you would like the Rosarians to pray for a special intention, please e-mail us at rosarysociety@ stmary.ws. Saturday, June 9th - Th e Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Th e Church commemorates Mary’s Immaculate Heart out of which came her “yes” to God when responding to ’s message for her to become the mother of our Savior, Jesus. Also, Mary’s innermost thoughts, as recounted in the Gospel, at the birth of Jesus and the subsequent visits of shepherds and kings: “But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.” (Luke 2:19) We have often seen the image of Our Lady’s heart, pierced by swords. Even through her suff erings, from an unmarried pregnant girl, to the fl ight into a strange country, Egypt, as a new mother; from missing her child for days in the metropolis of Jerusalem, to watch her beloved Son die on a cross like a common criminal, Mary never lost her faith in God’s will for her. May devotion to Mary’s Immaculate Heart teach us this same unwavering faith in God, Our Lord Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit, no matter what crisis or dilemma we fi nd ourselves in. “Immaculate Heart of Mary, Pray for us now and at the hour of our death. Amen.”

Pope Francis on Twitter (@Pontifex): Mary lived Jesus’ Beatittudes like no other: she is saintly among the , she shows us the way to holiness and accompanies us.

Th e Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ | June 3, 2018 Th e Institution of the Feast of Corpus Christi St. Juliana was a and mystic who had a series of visions in which she was instructed by Our Lord to work to establish a liturgical feast for the Holy Eucharist, to which she had a great devotion. After many years of trying, she fi nally convinced the bishop, the future Urban IV, to create a special feast in honor of the Blessed Sacrament, where none had existed before. Soon after her death, Pope Urban instituted Corpus Christi for the Universal Church and celebrated it for the fi rst time in Orvieto in 1264, a year after the Eucharistic Miracle in Bolsena, .

Inspired by the miracle at Bolsena, Pope Urban commissioned a Dominican friar, St. Th omas Aquinas, to compose the Mass and Offi ce for the feast of Corpus Christi. Aquinas’ hymns in honor of the Holy Eucharist, Pange Lingua, Tantum Ergo, Panis Angelicus, and O Salutaris Hostia are beloved hymns the Church sings on the feast of Corpus Christi as well as throughout the year during Exposition and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament takes place on Mondays from 3:00 to 8:00 PM in the chapel off the south side of the Church. It concludes with Benediction at 8:00 PM.
