November 2018: Housing there are 74,293 households in Luton of which 2,778 (3.7 per cent) are in Crawley Crawley has 6.3 per cent detached, 55.3 per cent semi-detached, 24.9 per cent terraced and 11.8 per cent purpose built flats (ii) the most common tenure in Crawley is households owned with a mortgage with 40.1 per cent followed closely by household owned outright with 28.7 per cent (iii) Crawley’s level of social rented households is 14.1 per cent. The lowest is in Barnfield with 1.5 per cent and highest in Northwell with 33.8 per cent (iv) the average three bedroom house in Luton in October 2018, cost £280,000 compared to £272,000 in Crawley (v) the level of overcrowding in Crawley is lower than the average in Luton with 8.2 per cent (vi)
August 2018: Health Crawley had a lower than Luton’s average (of 9.1 per cent) level of low birth weights over a five year period with 8.1 per cent (vii) in the 2011 census, the percentage of people who self-reported bad or very bad health in Crawley was 4.8 per cent (as a percentage of the total number of people who responded to this question) (viii) child obesity in Crawley was lower than Luton’s average; however adult obesity was slightly higher at 27.5 per cent (ix) the average life expectancy in Luton for females is 82.4 and male 78.5; in comparison, Crawley’s average was higher for both genders with 83.8 and 81.1 respectively (x) the highest number of deaths recorded in Crawley was circulatory disease and cancer; however numbers of deaths were lower compared to other wards in Luton (xi)

April 2018: Demographics (xii) Crawley ward is located in the south of the borough. The population of Crawley (based on mid-year estimate 2016) was just under 4,500, accounting for 3.5 per cent of Luton’s population over 37 per cent of the population in Crawley are over the age of 45
Population (xiii) the white (British, Scottish, N. Irish, Welsh) population of Crawley consists of 60.8 per cent, compared to 44.6 per cent in Luton other White and Irish account for 10.1 per cent of the population in that ward

Education (xix) children achieving a good level of development (GLD) in early years were just below average for Luton with 67 per cent KS1 pupils achieved below Luton’s average standard in reading, writing and maths (RWM) with 54.1 per cent pupils in KS2 attained a higher than average in RWM with 64.1 per cent achieving at or above expected standard in the combined subjects of reading, writing and maths

Obesity There are many routes by which obesity is a detriment to wellbeing. There is an association between mortality and obesity, with obesity decreasing life expectancy by up to nine years. It causes insulin insensitivity, which is an important causal factor in diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and stroke. Obesity is associated with the development of hormone sensitive cancers, the increased mechanical load increases liability to osteoarthritis and sleep apnoea, and it also carries psychosocial penalties.

Life expectancy Life expectancy at birth is useful as a summary measure of all-cause mortality as it is a fundamental and probably the oldest measure of the health status of the population. It represents the cumulative effect of the prevalence of risk factors, prevalence and severity of disease, and the effectiveness of interventions and treatment. Differences in levels of all-cause mortality reflect health inequalities between different population groups e.g. between genders, social classes and ethnic groups.

Occupancy levels The bedroom occupancy rating provides a measure of whether a household's accommodation is overcrowded or under occupied. The number of bedrooms required (based on a standard formula) is subtracted from the number of bedrooms present to obtain the occupancy rating.
