1 Queen Adelaide and the Extension of Anglicanism in Malta Nicholas Dixon Close to the Centre of the Maltese Capital of Vallett
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Apollo Queen Adelaide and the Extension of Anglicanism in Malta Nicholas Dixon Close to the centre of the Maltese capital of Valletta there stands an imposing neoclassical church with an Ionic portico of six columns and a 210-foot tower crowned with a spire. Presenting a striking contrast with the large dome of the neighbouring Carmelite Church (completed in 1981), this tower occupies a prominent position on the city’s skyline. Above the portico of the church is written in Latin, ‘Queen Adelaide with a grateful heart dedicated this Collegiate Church to Almighty God 1844’.1 Consecrated to St Paul, this Anglican pro- cathedral has been more commonly known as ‘Queen Adelaide’s Church’, after its royal benefactress. Why did King William IV’s widow make such a bold statement of Anglicanism in an overwhelmingly Roman Catholic colony? The question has never been adequately answered. The standard explanation, expressed at length by Arthur Bonnici and Alan Keighley, is that Adelaide was simply providing for the needs of the English Protestant population of the island.2 Yet contemporary observers saw the building of the church in more complex terms. As Robin Gill has noted in passing, there existed a definite perception that St Paul’s was not simply an expatriate church, but also a means of propagating Protestantism.3 This perception was shared by two religious groups with widely divergent perspectives: Evangelicals and Roman Catholics. The Evangelical Malta Times stated after the consecration of St Paul’s: ‘it may be said that the public worship of the Church of England was never, with any good effects, celebrated in Malta until the 1st of November, 1844, from which day we hope we may date the rapid progress of the true faith in that island.’4 1 Alan Keighley, Queen Adelaide’s Church (Trowbridge, 2000), 172; National Inventory of the Cultural Property of the Maltese Islands, entries no. -

NATIONAL ARCHDEACONS’ FORUM serving the Church of England and the Church in Wales Archdeacons’ News Bulletin no. 28 October 2017 from Norman Boakes Archdeacons’ National Executive Officer For those who have enjoyed the Lindchester Chronicles with their clear reflection in fiction of so much truth about the Church of England, the publication of Catherine Fox’s third and final volume in the series will be much welcomed. Realms of Glory introduces us to a second archdeacon to fill the long vacancy alongside Matt - though he is about to move on to other things. Cathy plays again with the stereotype of the archdeacon in her character of the Ven Bea Whitchurch, and because Bea knits she tries to compare her to Madame Defarge at the guillotine. But “No. It’s no good. Even as I wrote that, I could hear Bea hooting with laughter. Bea doesn’t really have a wrong side. Obviously, she’s capable of being firm when required, and now and then of getting pretty cross. But it’s becoming clear to me that once again I have failed to present you with an archidiaconal monster.” As in her previous novels, Cathy explores the realities of humanity, our frailties, our hopes, our fears, the burdens we carry from the past and need to work with, and how people of faith seek to live and grow with all this reality. She does it with a gentle touch, and shows how so often it is love which transforms things, a love which engages, challenges, sometimes suffers, and perseveres. It may be fiction, but like all good fiction it reflects human life and gives us insight into faith. -

The Canterbury Association
The Canterbury Association (1848-1852): A Study of Its Members’ Connections By the Reverend Michael Blain Note: This is a revised edition prepared during 2019, of material included in the book published in 2000 by the archives committee of the Anglican diocese of Christchurch to mark the 150th anniversary of the Canterbury settlement. In 1850 the first Canterbury Association ships sailed into the new settlement of Lyttelton, New Zealand. From that fulcrum year I have examined the lives of the eighty-four members of the Canterbury Association. Backwards into their origins, and forwards in their subsequent careers. I looked for connections. The story of the Association’s plans and the settlement of colonial Canterbury has been told often enough. (For instance, see A History of Canterbury volume 1, pp135-233, edited James Hight and CR Straubel.) Names and titles of many of these men still feature in the Canterbury landscape as mountains, lakes, and rivers. But who were the people? What brought these eighty-four together between the initial meeting on 27 March 1848 and the close of their operations in September 1852? What were the connections between them? In November 1847 Edward Gibbon Wakefield had convinced an idealistic young Irishman John Robert Godley that in partnership they could put together the best of all emigration plans. Wakefield’s experience, and Godley’s contacts brought together an association to promote a special colony in New Zealand, an English society free of industrial slums and revolutionary spirit, an ideal English society sustained by an ideal church of England. Each member of these eighty-four members has his biographical entry. -

Nicholas Dixon November 2018 ii Thesis Summary The Activity and Influence of the Established Church in England, c. 1800-1837 Nicholas Andrew Dixon Pembroke College, Cambridge This thesis examines the various ways in which the Church of England engaged with English politics and society from c. 1800 to 1837. Assessments of the early nineteenth-century Church of England remain coloured by a critique originating in radical anti-clerical polemics of the period and reinforced by the writings of the Tractarians and Élie Halévy. It is often assumed that, in consequence of social and political change, the influence of a complacent and reactionary church was irreparably eroded by 1830. -

THE ARCHDEACONS’ FORUM for the Church of England and the Church in Wales So you’re going to be an Archdeacon… A booklet for new archdeacons in the Church of England April 2019 1 What is The Archdeacons’ Forum? The Archdeacons’ Forum exists to serve all archdeacons in the Church of England and Church in Wales, including the military archdeacons and the Deans of the Channel Islands. It was originally formed in 1991 to co-ordinate the work of archdeacons and provide support, training and development for them. The current chair is the Ven Stephen Taylor, Archdeacon of Maidstone and the Vice- Chair is the Ven Fiona Windsor, Archdeacon of Horsham. The Forum Executive consists of archdeacons elected from each of the English archidiaconal regions and from the archdeacons of the Church in Wales, together a representative of the archdeacons to HM Forces. We have pages on the national Church of England website. They are very useful gatherings for support and sharing. In 2010, a report on the continuing ministerial development of archdeacons was commissioned by the Forum and this was published in 2011. A copy of this report Sustaining Leaders in Mission and Change will be sent to you with this booklet. It is also available on our pages on the national Church of England website (see above). The Forum organises two regular events for Archdeacons: • A New Archdeacons’ Conference, designed for those who are about to or who have recently taken up appointment.
