Mr 1 o’ clock, George Romaines

The death has been announced of George Romaines, aged 82. George, once described as ‘the most popular man in the North East’ made his fame on the live, five-days-a-week ‘The One O’Clock Show’ on Tyne Tees Television. The programme ran for five years and 1,098 shows between 1959 and 1964. Before television fame, George was a Shildon Wagon Works electri- cian. He was educated at Timothy Hackworth Junior School and played cricket for Shildon British Railways alongside Jack Watson, who has also passed away, (see below). Throughout his fame he remained a Shildon man, living in the town all his life. After the One O’Clock Show, George remained at Tyne Tess Television as an executive for the next twenty years, before becoming a fund raising director for the Teesside Hospice. He retired with his wife Freda, who died last year. George was also president of Bishop Auckland Cricket Club, which he described as “a great honour, like a year at the Palladium.” He is survived by his three sons, Paul, Mark and Simon.
