The parish name is given in parentheses. NB Townships are often fragmented, with detached portions; use the first edition 6” scale Ordnance Survey map to determine which township is appropriate for a place. Under the Tithe Commutation Act of 1836, three copies of tithe plans and apportionment books were made for each township: (1) for the Tithe Commissioners (held in The National Archives); (2) for the Diocese, and; (3) for the parish (the copy held here at Durham County Record Office (DCRO)). Sometimes a further copy was made for an estate or local authority. Where we hold a copy of a plan and/or apportionment then our catalogue reference is given in the list, otherwise a code is given to indicate the location of the diocesan copy: (a) for parishes in the diocese of Durham: (ASC) Durham University Library (Archives & Special Collections), Palace Green, Durham, (see also https://www.dur.ac.uk/library/asc/news/?itemno=22868) HANDLISTS:SubjectGuide05Tithe.docx/14-Jul-20/14:17 page 1 (b) for parishes in the diocese of West Yorkshire and the Dales: (Leeds) the Leeds branch of the West Yorkshire Archive Service, Nepshaw Lane South, Morley, Leeds, LS27 7JQ, or (NY) North Yorkshire County Record Office, Northallerton (NA) Edmundbyers and Muggleswick records have been transferred to the Northumberland Archives The list also includes those townships for which no tithe was payable and no plan produced. Township names are shown in bold type where we hold a plan and in italics where we have been able to create a high quality digital image of a plan (which can be purchased); the other, largest, plans can be photographed here by purchasing a camera licence. a = apportionment + = altered apportionment(s) exist at DCRO p = plan #
