SEEDS GASQUET, CILIC, MONFILS, BAGHDATIS HIGHLIGHT BUSY DAY THREE

 DAY THREE MATCHES -- There is one first round and four second round singles matches on Wednesday’s schedule with four seeded players headlining the action. In the first second round match on Centre Court, big-serving left-handers and qualifier meet for the first time on the ATP World Tour. They split two previous meetings at the Nottingham Challenger in 2013 (De Schepper won in three) and qualifying at last year’s ATP Masters 1000 Miami tournament (Berrer won in a third set TB).

In the next match on, Japanese No. 2 and No. 8 seed/wild card of square off in a second round match. In their previous meeting, Baghdatis won in straight sets in the quarter-finals at the Vancouver Challenger two years ago en route to the title. Daniel finished in the Top 100 Emirates ATP Rankings for the first time in his career last season at No. 96, compiling a 39-15 match record with three titles on the ATP Challenger Tour. Baghdatis made his tournament debut on Monday defeating Lukas Lacko 75 75.

In the next first round match, No. 5 and two-time Montpellier winner Gael Monfils takes on qualifier Edouard Roger-Vasselin, who is looking for his first win (0-2) against his countryman. Monfils won both previous meetings last year in the 1R of Rotterdam and Roland Garros. Monfils won the title here in 2010 and ’14 and was runner-up in ’12. He has a 15-3 career record at the tournament. The 29-year-old Frenchman is coming off his personal-best QF showing at the (l. to Raonic). Roger-Vasselin is making his sixth Montpellier appearance (4-5) and his best result was the quarter-finals in 2014.

In the evening session, top seed and two-time champion (2013, ’15) makes his first ATP World Tour appearance of the season against . Gasquet, who did not play in January due to a back injury, brings a 2-1 -to-head record against Gulbis. The Frenchman has a 15-3 career record in Montpellier and his only loss here in the last three years came to Monfils in the final two years ago. Gulbis is looking for his first Top 10 win since defeating No. 6 Tomas Berdych in the quarter-finals at Roland Garros in 2014.

In the final match on, German teenager meets No. 2 seed Marin Cilic for the second time. In their last meeting in Washington last August, Cilic won the quarter-final match 75 76. Zverev saved one match point in his first round win over Luca Vanni on Monday and he was the only teenager of four in the main draw to reach the second round. Cilic, who is making his Montpellier debut, opened the year by reaching the quarter-finals in Brisbane (l. to Thiem).
