The Australian Open was first held in 1905, with the first women’s singles championship being staged in 1922. The is the 93rd staging of the women’s singles championship and the 51st of the Open Era, which began in 1968 (1969 for Australian Open) and saw the introduction of prize money. The 2019 Australian Open will feature 128 players (108 direct entries, 12 qualifiers, eight wildcards) competing in the singles main draw. The Australian Open has been a 128-draw since 1986. Previously the event was staged as a 32-draw (1969, 1971-72, 1976, 1977 [Jan.], 1977 [Dec.], 1978, 1979) and 64-draw (1970, 1973- 75, 1980-85). The event was held in December from 1977-85 and in January from 1987 onwards (not held in 1986).

As such, 2019 Roland Garros represents the 112th staging of the event overall, and the 89 th edition since interna- tional players were admitted (the tournament was not held during WWI and WWII). 2019 Roland Garros also marks the 52nd staging of the Open Era (which began in 1968). The singles main draw will feature 128 players (108 direct entries, 12 qualifiers, eight wildcards). Roland Garros has been a 128-draw since 1981 in addition to 1968 and 1972. Previously the event was staged as a 64-draw (1969-71, 1973-80).

The 2019 event marks the 52nd staging of the Open Era, which began in 1968 and saw the introduc- tion of prize money. Overall this is the 138th US Open, the men’s event having first been held in 1881. The singles main draw will feature 128 players (104 direct entries, 16 qualifiers, eight wildcards). The US Open has been a 128-draw since 1976. Previously the event was staged as a 64-draw (1968-75).

Tennis returned to the Olympic Games as a medal sport at Seoul in 1988, after a 64-year absence.
