Roux Pretoria 2009 S T R E L I T Z I A This series has replaced Memoirs of the Botanical Survey of South Africa and Annals of the Kirstenbosch Botanic Gardens which SANBI inherited from its predecessor organisations. The plant genus Strelitzia occurs naturally in the eastern parts of southern Africa. It comprises three arborescent species, known as wild bananas, and two acaulescent species, known as crane flowers or bird-of-paradise flowers. The logo of the South African National Biodiversity Institute is based on the striking inflorescence of Strelitzia reginae, a native of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal that has become a garden favourite worldwide. It sym- bolises the commitment of the Institute to champion the exploration, conservation, sustain- able use, appreciation and enjoyment of South Africa’s exceptionally rich biodiversity for all people. (Family: Blechnaceae) commonly known as ‘Climbing fern’ or ‘Paku midin’ in Malay is an evergreen tropical fern popularly used by the Malaysian community. Earlier reports on pharmacological activities on the plant include significant antioxidant, antibacterial and antifungal activities. In the present paper, we report some pharmacognostic studies of the leaves and fronds since there are no standardization parameters for this plant reported in the literature. The transverse section of the leaves revealed dorsiventral nature. Stomata are absent in the upper epidermis. Transverse section of the fronds revealed numerous vascular bundles scattered throughout the section starting from the cortex region. The powder microscopy of the leaves revealed fragments of epidermal cells, mesophyll, covering trichomes, calcium oxalate crystals, xylem vessels and phloem fibres. Majuro Atoll THE VASCULAR PLANTS OF MAJURO ATOLL, REPUBLIC OF THE MARSHALL ISLANDS ABSTRACT Majuro Atoll has been a center of activity for the Marshall Islands since 1944 and is now the major population center and port of entry for the country. Previous to the accompanying study, no thorough documentation has been made of the vascular plants of Majuro Atoll. There were only reports that were either part of much larger discussions on the entire Micronesian region or the Marshall Islands as a whole, and were of a very limited scope. Previous reports by Fosberg, Sachet & Oliver (1979, 1982, 1987) presented only 115 vascular plants on Majuro Atoll. In this study, 563 vascular plants have been recorded on Majuro. INTRODUCTION The accompanying report presents a complete flora of Majuro Atoll, which has never been done before. It includes a listing of all species, notation as to origin (i.e. indigenous, aboriginal introduction, recent introduction), as well as the original range of each. The major synonyms are also listed. For almost all, English common names are presented. Marshallese names are given, where these were found, and spelled according to the current spelling system, aside from limitations in diacritic markings. A brief notation of location is given for many of the species. The entire list of 563 plants is provided to give the people a means of gaining a better understanding of the nature of the plants of Majuro Atoll. -

It is arranged alphabetically by botanical name and includes unique order numbers to simplify requesting and processing orders. Key to column headings: pic: Link to donor supplied picture(s) of the fern the spores were collected from. Most rcnt mo / yr - donor : For the most recently donated spores, the month and year of spore collection and the donor initials. Packets rcnt (tot): The number of spore packets available of the most recent donation and the total number of packets available including past donations. Each packet contains approximately 3 to 10 cubic millimeters of spores (several thousand spores). Those marked as “Small qnty” in the notes column contain less than 3 cubic millimeters. Fr SZ: Approximate maximum frond size. Very Small = less than 4 inches, Small = 4 inches to 1 foot, Medium = 1 to 3 feet, Large = 3 to 6 feet, Very Large = greater than 6 feet. USDA Zone: Minimum and maximum growing zones based on various books and the internet. Notes: Common synonyms and miscellaneous notes. Viability Test: Spores sown on sterilized Pro-Mix HP soil and maintained for 16 weeks at room temperature 11 inches below two 20W cool white fluorescent tubes (or equivalent) illuminated 14 hours per day. -

Field Trip McDowell County Panther Wildlife Management Area April 24-26 The West Virginia Native Plant Society will conduct a field trip to Panther Wildlife Management Area, in McDowell County. The area consists of a very old second growth hardwood forest dominated with hemlock. Spring wildflowers such as Fern-Leaf Phacelia, Large Yellow Lady’s Slipper, Long-Flowered Alumroot, Showy Orchis, Mandarin, Galax, Whorled Pogonia, and Recurved Fetterbush should be near their peak in this southern tip of West Virginia. A board meeting will be held at the Group Camp Recurved fetterbush © Kevin Campbell Lodge on 4/25/2015 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Location: Panther is located in the rugged mountains near the southern border of West Virginia, Virginia, and Kentucky. From Route 52, one mile north of Iaegar, turn at the sign to Panther.
