Signed: i Dedication for the Redbricks ii Abstract This thesis contributes to a narrative about the interwovenness of the sociomaterial world. To do so, I propose a new way of thinking about collective activities as a fundamental part of our lives: namely, I argue that organising is geographically constituted. Problematising existing engagements in organisation studies with geographical ideas and pointing to the lively debates about space, place, scale and territory in human geography, I draw these together by arguing for the ‘geographical constitutiveness of organising’ as a conceptual framework at the intersection of these two fields, which incorporates a processual, relational, and sociomaterial view of the world. Further, by plugging in (Jackson and Mazzei, 2012) the notion of rhizome to assemblage, I suggest ‘rhizomatic assemblage’ as a metaphor for thinking at this intersection. Building on this, the research question that this thesis addresses is: How can collective activities of organising be understood as geographically constituted? To respond to this question, a methodological argument draws on new materialism and Barad’s (2007) ‘agential realism’ in favour of a diffractive ethnographic approach (Gullion, 2018), in which ‘agential cuts’ implicate the researcher’s ethics and ways of knowing with the phenomena that exist in the world. Diffractive considerations of my subjectivity as researcher and my values inform why the focus of empirical fieldwork was on a particular rhizomatic assemblage: the Redbricks, a housing estate in Hulme, Manchester. Findings from the fieldwork are discussed in terms of four agential cuts to the rhizomatic assemblage: genealogising, shaping, cultivating and geometabolising. Each provokes a new perspective about how collective activities on the Redbricks are geographical accomplishments, and how organising is geographically constituted. Throughout, organising (on) the estate is (re)considered as a rhizomatic assemblage: as consequential unfoldings of geographically constituted activities also imbued with potentiality. Thus, this thesis enlivens our thinking about sociomaterial collective activities as becomings-together that give meaning to our lives, and points to ways that such activities should be encouraged. iii Acknowledgments Countless influences make this thesis a becoming-together, and for them I am deeply grateful. Seconds later, a colleague follows him on a skateboard, slaloming towards the canteen. Working in a 200,000 sq ft space — roughly the area of two Manhattan blocks — has encouraged some occupants to find alternative ways of traversing the office. The former electronics factory is salvage from a wreck. The long decline of industry during the 20th century left empty warehouses, mills and factories strewn around Greater Manchester. Some remain derelict but many have been reclaimed by a new generation of entrepreneurs. The Sharp Project is home to more than 60 companies. Rows of converted shipping containers house small businesses from a data-driven forensics lab to a post-production studio. Bright geometric lines of orange and red illuminate the otherwise grey, white and black arena; the place looks like it was decorated by Piet Mondrian. Students from a nearby school mingle with techies, marvelling that a workplace near them includes a ping-pong table. “It’s like Silicon Valley,” a pupil says. Only an item on the lunch menu belies the location: chips and gravy is a Mancunian fuel. In his office, Andrew Daniels recalls growing up in Manchester in the 1980s and early 1990s. The managing director of Degree 53, a digital design company named after Manchester’s latitude, says that “the city centre used to be a terrible place”.

Working closely with renowned architect SimpsonHaugh, designer of some of Manchester’s major landmarks such as Beetham Tower and Two St Peter’s Square, Legal & General has made a range of significant BTR design improvements to the tower, in order to meet the specific requirements of today’s elective renters. The West Tower will be the tallest BTR scheme in the UK. This latest acquisition brings Legal & General’s development pipeline in Manchester to over 750 units, increasing its exposure to a target city with strong momentum, underpinned by a significant demand for rental accommodation. Whilst Manchester has seen increased investment over recent years, the city’s housing needs remain under-served. According to Experian, the population of Greater Manchester is expected to grow by 14% over the next 20 years with 3,465 rental households forming every year. Despite an estimated 12,000 new homes required each year to meet demand, annual delivery since 2010 has averaged just 650 homes. Deansgate’s West Tower is located in Manchester’s prime residential area of Castlefield, comprising 44 storeys overlooking the River Medlock. It consists of 350 units, 147 car parking spaces and ancillary commercial space.
