  • North West Geography
ISSN 1476-180 North West Geography Volume 8, Number 1, 2008 North West Geography, Volume 8, 2008 1 A deeper understanding of climate induced risk to urban infrastructure: case studies of past events in Greater Manchester Nigel Lawson and Sarah Lindley Geography, School of Environment and Development The University of Manchester Email: [email protected] Abstract A detailed knowledge of past events is sometimes used to help understand and manage potential future risks. Flood risk management is one area where this has been particularly true, but the same ideas could theoretically be applied to other potential climate induced impacts in urban areas such as subsidence, sewer collapse and land movement. Greater Manchester, as the world’s first industrial city, provides an ideal case study of how such events have affected the urban infrastructure in the past. This paper reviews some of the evidence which can be gleaned from past events and also shows how the realisation of some climate-related risks in heavy modified urban environments can only be fully understood through a consideration of sub-surface as well as surface characteristics. Key words flood, subsidence, risk assessment, Greater Manchester Introduction element which is exposed. It follows, therefore, that unless Urban areas have always been prone to climate-related risks there is a connection between all three risk components, as a result of their ability to modify physical processes such there can be no risk. Using these terms, drivers of changing as drainage and heat exchange and their high concentration patterns of risk can be seen to be as much associated with of people and property.

  • The Peak Forest
WW GUIDE THE PEAK FOREST AND ASHTON CANALS You begin in urban Manchester – and 21 miles later, you’re in a historic basin in the glorious Peak District, moored up beside a real pub. Richard Fairhurst savours a fine canal journey The Ashton Canal FOR MANY YEARS, THE ASHTON CANAL was synonymous with all that was wrong with urban waterways. The 1896 Oarsman’s Guide was uncompromising: “Its course is entirely through a manufacturing district with the usual unpleasant surroundings. The vapour rising from its waters caused by the factories on the banks, condensing their exhaust Bugsworth steam therein, is sometimes so thick as Basin. to make it diffi cult to see one’s way.” Downloaded by David A Calverley from waterwaysworld.com June 2012 Waterways World 71 WW GUIDE 1 1 Ancoats Lock 1 – By the 1960s, its star had sunk lower note the duplicated still. Though never formally closed, it was chamber. totally unnavigable: its channel dry, its lock-gates rotten or swinging loose. Local councillors and anxious parents demanded its infi lling. Its branches to Stockport and Hollinwood were abandoned, and the main line, like so many industrial urban waterways, looked set to go the same way. What saved it was an idea fi rst hatched in 1965: the Cheshire Ring. Adventurous holidaymakers were beginning to discover the canal system, and circular routes were perfect for a week’s holiday. The Ashton and adjacent canals would provide the ‘missing link’ in one such route. Volunteers from the Peak Forest Canal Society, the Inland Waterways Association, and (latterly) the new Waterway Recovery 2 Group set about bringing the canal back to life.

  • Chapter 6: James and Wainwright Bellhouse Ltd., Cotton Spinners
CHAPTER 6 JAMES AND WAINWRIGHT BELLHOUSE LTD. COTTON SPINNERS The business venture started by David Bellhouse (1764 – 1840) that seems least related to the rest is cotton spinning. This business was passed to his sons, James (1796 – 1874) and Wainwright Bellhouse (1800 – 1885), about a decade before the father’s death. By 1833, David Bellhouse had ceased to list himself as a cotton spinner in the Manchester directories. Wain- wright Bellhouse first appeared in the Manchester directories in 1832 with his occupation given as cotton spinner; James Bellhouse followed in 1836. The firm was know as Messrs. Bellhouse by 18311 and as James and Wainwright (J. & W.) Bellhouse by 1833.2 Advertisement for the Medlock New Mill3 129 The traditional date for the start of J. & W. Bellhouse is 1792.4 However, this is the year in which David Bellhouse senior took up residence in Faulkner Street and began to work inde- pendently as a joiner and builder, not the year the spinning business started. David Bellhouse built the original mill, associated with the firm known as the Medlock New Mill, in 1806 and so the beginning of the firm should be dated from that year. The mill was just outside the boundary of the Township of Manchester as defined in 1800.5 It was bounded by the Medlock River and by Pritchard, York and Charles Streets in Chorlton on Medlock or Chorlton Row. The mill was situated directly across the Medlock River from all the other Bellhouse enterprises, which were in Hunt or Whitworth Street. David Bellhouse senior built a second mill at this location in 1836.6 Sometime before 1851 a third mill was added.

  • The Extraordinary Resurgence of Manchester Is the Best Model for Closing the North-South Economic Divide
Financial Times: http://www.ft.com/cms/s/2/a0513f2a-b7bb-11e4-981d- 00144feab7de.html#ixzz3SZw6S2Ao The extraordinary resurgence of Manchester is the best model for closing the north-south economic divide A young man in jeans, a blue T-shirt and rollerblades glides across the shiny grey floor of The Sharp Project in northeast Manchester. Seconds later, a colleague follows him on a skateboard, slaloming towards the canteen. Working in a 200,000 sq ft space — roughly the area of two Manhattan blocks — has encouraged some occupants to find alternative ways of traversing the office. The former electronics factory is salvage from a wreck. The long decline of industry during the 20th century left empty warehouses, mills and factories strewn around Greater Manchester. Some remain derelict but many have been reclaimed by a new generation of entrepreneurs. The Sharp Project is home to more than 60 companies. Rows of converted shipping containers house small businesses from a data-driven forensics lab to a post-production studio. Bright geometric lines of orange and red illuminate the otherwise grey, white and black arena; the place looks like it was decorated by Piet Mondrian. Students from a nearby school mingle with techies, marvelling that a workplace near them includes a ping-pong table. “It’s like Silicon Valley,” a pupil says. Only an item on the lunch menu belies the location: chips and gravy is a Mancunian fuel. In his office, Andrew Daniels recalls growing up in Manchester in the 1980s and early 1990s. The managing director of Degree 53, a digital design company named after Manchester’s latitude, says that “the city centre used to be a terrible place”.
