Ehemals stolzer Industriestandort, wurde die Stadt vom industriellen Niedergang schwer ge- VORWORT troffen – und wird heute oft als Positivbeispiel der gerade auch im wirtschaftlichen Sinne gelungenen Stadterneue- rung gehandelt. Mit einer Entwicklung wie im Brennglas – vom „Menetekel“ (Gschwind und Henckel 1981) zum „Phoenix aus der Asche“ (Walther 2006) – bietet Man- Josiane Meier chester in besonderer Dichte die Möglichkeit, wirtschaftli- che Dimensionen des Stadtverfalls und der Stadterneue- Fachgebiet Stadt- rung nachzuvollziehen. und Regionalökonomie Grund genug, sich im Rahmen eines Seminars unter dem Titel „Ökonomie der Stadterneuerung“ genauer mit dem Institut für Stadt- und Wandel dieser Stadt auseinanderzusetzen. Die vorliegen- de Broschüre ist Produkt dieses Seminars, welches im Regionalplanung, TU Berlin Sommersemester 2015 im Rahmen der Master-Studien- gänge Stadt- und Regionalplanung sowie Urban Design an der TU Berlin stattfand. Im Sinne der forschenden Leh- re galt es, zunächst vom Schreibtisch aus und anschlie- ßend im Rahmen einer Exkursion nach Manchester und Salford vom 20. bis 25. Juli 2015 einer Reihe von Fragen nachzugehen: Was kennzeichnet den Stadterneuerungs- prozess in Manchester? Welche Akteure, Interessen und Triebkräfte stehen dahinter? Welche Strategien werden verfolgt, welche Instrumente angewandt? Und inwiefern kann die Stadt tatsächlich als Erfolgsmodell gelten? Noch ein weiterer Grund ermunterte zur Wahl von Man- chester als Ziel: Die Exkursion ordnet sich ein in eine Rei- he stadtforscherischer Erkundungen durch Angehörige der TU Berlin und knüpft daran an. Prof. Dietrich Henckel, Fachgebiet Stadt- und Regionalökonomie, besuchte die Stadt bereits 1978 im Rahmen eines Forschungs- aufenthalts und kehrte danach mehrfach zurück, und Prof. Uwe-Jens Walther, ehemals Fachgebiet Stadt- und Regionalsoziologie, der 2005 ebenfalls mit einer Gruppe Studierender anlässlich eines Studienprojektes vor Ort war. Neben den schriftlichen Berichten erlaubten uns insbe- sondere die während ihrer Aufenthalte entstandenen Fotografien Einblicke in die Vergangenheit. Zahlreiche 1978 und 2005 fotografierte Orte wurden während der Exkursion wieder aufgesucht und dokumentiert. Die aus der Gegenüberstellung 1978-2015 entstandenen Bildpaa- re veranschaulichen auf eindrückliche Weise den tiefgrei- fenden Wandel, den Manchester durchlebte und weiterhin durchlebt. Eine Auswahl der Fotografien und Gegenüber- stellungen findet sich in dieser Broschüre wieder. Das Exkursionsprogramm wurde im Anschluss an eine Auseinandersetzung mit den Rahmenbedingungen und Prozessen der Stadtplanung und -erneuerung in England und Manchester gemeinsam erarbeitet, die einzelnen inhaltlichen Bausteine wurden von den Studierenden vorbereitet. Zur Strukturierung diente eine Einteilung der Stadt in vier Bereiche, deren Erkundung mittels Terminen mit Akteuren vor Ort sowie selbstgeführter Begehungen jeweils ein Teil der Exkursion gewidmet war: das Zentrum mit den Stadtteilen City Centre, Castlefield und Northern 4 Quarter, East Manchester mit Ancoats und New Islington, im Westen Manchesters Schwesterstadt Salford mit den Stadtteilen Chapel Street, Greengate und der MediaCity an den Salford Quays, und schließlich Hulme und Fallow- field im Süden. Diese vier Stadtbereiche sind gleichzeitig zentrales Glie- derungselement dieser Broschüre. Ihre Lage in der Stadt sowie ihre Entwicklungspfade werden jeweils einleitend skizziert, um daraufhin ausgewählte Brennpunkte der Stadterneuerung mit ihren besonderen Herausforde- rungen, den angesetzten Strategien und involvierten Akteuren genauer zu beleuchten. Darüber hinaus wurde zwei Ansatzpunkten der Stadtentwicklung besondere Aufmerksamkeit – und in dieser Broschüre jeweils ein Exkurs – gewidmet: der Night-Time Economy und dem Fußball. In beiden Fällen handelt es sich um eng mit dem Selbstverständnis Manchesters verbundene Image- und Hoffnungsträger für die Stadterneuerung wie auch die lokale Wirtschaft. Quer zur Betrachtung anhand der Stadtbereiche wurde eine Reihe wiederkehrender Themenfelder der Stad- terneuerung herausgearbeitet. Diese können anhand entsprechender Schlagworte in der Broschüre verfolgt werden. Von „Anti-Social Behaviour“ bis „Urban Heritage Park“: Der Entschlüsselung zentraler Konzepte und Be- grifflichkeiten, die den Stadterneuerungsdiskurs in Eng- land und Manchester prägen, dient ein umfangreiches Glossar. Das letzte Wort haben die Studierenden. Als Fazit reflektieren sie in kurzen Statements ihre persönli- chen Eindrücke der Stadt, mit deren Wandel sie sich ein Semester lang intensiv auseinandergesetzt haben. Seconds later, a colleague follows him on a skateboard, slaloming towards the canteen. Working in a 200,000 sq ft space — roughly the area of two Manhattan blocks — has encouraged some occupants to find alternative ways of traversing the office. The former electronics factory is salvage from a wreck. The long decline of industry during the 20th century left empty warehouses, mills and factories strewn around Greater Manchester. Some remain derelict but many have been reclaimed by a new generation of entrepreneurs. The Sharp Project is home to more than 60 companies. Rows of converted shipping containers house small businesses from a data-driven forensics lab to a post-production studio. Bright geometric lines of orange and red illuminate the otherwise grey, white and black arena; the place looks like it was decorated by Piet Mondrian. Students from a nearby school mingle with techies, marvelling that a workplace near them includes a ping-pong table. “It’s like Silicon Valley,” a pupil says. Only an item on the lunch menu belies the location: chips and gravy is a Mancunian fuel. In his office, Andrew Daniels recalls growing up in Manchester in the 1980s and early 1990s. The managing director of Degree 53, a digital design company named after Manchester’s latitude, says that “the city centre used to be a terrible place”.

    Architecture Research 2017, 7(4): 146-158 DOI: 10.5923/j.arch.20170704.03 On the Aesthetics of Seasonally Adaptive Buildings – A Morphological Approach towards Climate Responsive Architecture Agnes Nyilas*, Yoshihito Kurazumi Department of Human Environmental Design, Sugiyama Jogakuen University, Nagoya, Japan Abstract The aesthetics of seasonally adaptive buildings is discussed in this paper, based on the recognition that there is a contemporary trend to reconsider the relation between climate and architectural form. In regions with hot-humid summer and cold-dry winter, however, the seasonal climate differences require different considerations for the same building depending on season. By such reason, the concept of seasonal adaptation is at the focus of interest in climate responsive architectural design. Several examples of seasonally adaptive buildings are analysed here to make clear the relation between their concepts and the architectural forms. Through the paper, author assumes that the general concept of seasonal adaptation might not require any concrete form, but it has the abstract image of form as periodically changing entity, forecasting a new aesthetics of periodical change. On the other hand, conclusion suggests that the reconsideration of the climate factor would certainly put constraints on the architectural form in a positive sense: promoting architects to reconsider energy efficiency, indoor comfort and health issues in relation to form.
