Abstract: we analyze the field of the realistic Argentine comics. This implies to attend the structural factors, considering that comics were born as part of the cultural industry and subordinated to the market field. But also we give importance to the actors construction practices, as a part of the field, who, in certain historical situations, introduce important modifications and moments of high autonomy of the economic field.

Oesterheld’s Iconic and Ironic Eternautas Abstract When speaking of Héctor Germán Oesterheld and his Eternautas series of comics, we are speaking of multiple and interlocking levels of icons. Oesterheld first began the historieta [comic] about the time-traveling Juan Salvo, known as the “Eternauta,” in the late 1950s, later revisiting it in the 1960s and 1970s. In the three Eternauta narratives in question,1 a group of intrepid technologically savvy individuals struggle against a deadly phosphorescent snowfall and a series of alien species only to have the news of their local victory obliterated by nuclear devastation and alien treachery. Attempts to avoid this near-future reality for Buenos Aires and/or the reconstruction of the city occupy the later installments of the series.

BALL It could be argued that the most significant development in twenty-first- century global comics emerged from the pages of a regional newspaper in the suburbs of Arhus, on the Jutland Peninsula of Denmark. In September of 2005, the Jyllands-Posten - a newspaper with a circulation of 120,000 readers - solicited representations of the Prophet Mohammed from members of a Danish newspaper illustrators’ union. Published in response to an author’s professed inability to secure an illustrator for a children’s book on the Qur’an, the resulting twelve images were amplified and disseminated digitally, setting off international protests in waves timed to republication efforts in the name of free speech. None of these was more visible than that of the French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo. Both horrifying violence, first in protests throughout the Muslim-majority world and later directed at the editorial staff of Charlie Hebdo, and the proliferation of images, on all sides of the spectrum from abso lutist appeals to free speech to the aniconism of some Muslims, have emerged in the aftermath.

  • INTRODUCTION Hark Well, O Reader, Because Your Ears Will Not Be Fed
INTRODUCTION Hark well, O reader, because your ears will not be fed with lies. It was the early Seventeenth Century and it was America. As writers, by the power that is rightfully ours, we will be telling a tale that is much older than our times and much farther away than where we find ourselves now. On that very day, two men were walking side by side, following the Old Slow River’s dark waters. Hugo Pratt from fabled Venice, and Milo Manara from Verona of romantic fame they were, and they were men of tales, of words and pictures. This is how Indian Summer is introduced to Italian readers in the early Nineteen Eighties, with a foreword penned by James Fenimore Cooper himself – or maybe, as many suspect, by his greatest Italian admirer, comics writer and artist Hugo Pratt. By that time, Pratt is already a well-established and revered creator everywhere comics (fumetti, bandes dessinées, historietas, quadrinhos) are sold: his Ballad of the Salt Sea (1967)'s impressive roster of unforgetable characters has won readers' hearts and Corto Maltese, the Ballad's main character, is a world-recognized icon of individual freedom and longing for liberty and adventure (the Ballad ranks 62 in the "100 Books of the Century" list compiled in 1999 by French newspaper Le Monde, where titles like On the Road, The Martian Chronicles, The Catcher in the Rye and The Big Sleep rank 67, 70, 88 and 96, respectively). A long, fascinating and almost hypnotic tale set on remote Pacific seas on the eve of WWI, and marked by Hugo Pratt's trademark "camera eye" and stylized linework, drawing both from Milton Caniff's seminal black & white and the Argentinian scene Pratt had been part of in the Nineteen Fifties, to many the Ballad is the definitive graphic novel.
