A pesar de esto, el conocimiento que se tiene sobre sus características biológicas es escaso y limitado. En este estudio se analizaron parámetros biológicos de M. galapagensis y M. thoburni mediante el uso de estimadores empíricos y un enfoque de sexo combinado, a partir de datos de Longitud Total (LT) en centímetros (cm) provenientes del desembarque en la Isla Santa Cruz. Los parámetros -1 de crecimiento de Von Bertalanffy para M. galapagensis fueron L∞ = 68.50 cm; k = 0.205 años y t0 = -0.662 años y -1 para M. thoburni de L∞ = 61.17 cm; k = 0.221 años y t0 = -0.627 años. El tamaño (L50%) y edad (t50%) de madurez de M. galapagensis fue 35.48 cm de LT y 2.90 años, respectivamente. Mientras que, para M. thoburni fue de 31.86 cm de LT y 2.71 años. La edad máxima teórica (tmax) y mortalidad natural (M) para M. galapagensis fue de 12.20 años y 0.49 años-1, respectivamente; y para M. thoburni fue 11.12 años y 0.53 años-1. Se concluye, que ambas especies de Mugílidos poseen un lento crecimiento, alcanzan su madurez casi a los tres años de edad, son medianamente longevos y con una elevada mortalidad natural. Abstract The yellow-tail mullet (Mugil galapagensis) and the black-tail mullet (Mugil thoburni) are the most commercially important Mugilids species of the Galapagos artisanal fishery. Despite this, knowledge about their biological characteristics is scarce and limited. In this study, biological parameters of M. galapagensis and M. thoburni were analyzed using empirical estimators and a combined sex approach, based on data of Total Length (TL) in centimeters (cm) from the landing on Santa Cruz Island.

Head often broad and flattened dorsally (rounded in Agonostomus and Joturus). Eyes partly covered by adipose ‘eyefold’ tissue (translucent fatty extensions of anterior and posterior rims of eye socket) that may cover most of eye except for a small area over pupil; adipose eyefold can be seen by inserting a small pointer between surface of eye and overlying adipose tissue; adipose eyefold absent in juveniles and in Agonostomus and Joturus. Snout short; mouth small or moderate in size, terminal or inferior; premaxillae protractile; teeth small, hidden, or absent. Two short dorsal fins, well-separated; first with 4 slender spines, second with 8 to 10 soft rays;anal fin short with 2 or 3 spines and 7 to 11 soft rays in adults (for species in area); caudal fin emarginate or forked; pectoral fins inserted high on body, with dorsal ray appearing short and spinous (although not a true spine); pelvic fins with 1 spine and 5 soft rays, inserted subabdominally, about equidistant between insertion of pectoral fin and origin of first dorsal fin. Scales moderate to large size, with 1 or more longitudinal rows of striae (grooves) on each scale; scales ctenoid except for those on anterior predorsal and lateral parts of head, which may be cycloid.

In May, Horst left his post as professor of fisheries in the LSU School of Renewable Resources and Marine Extension specialist for Louisiana Sea Grant and the LSU Agricultural Center. “Louisiana’s commercial fishermen have suffered a lot over the years,” Horst said grimly. “The future for consumptive users is also worrisome.” Jerald Horst The damage Hurricanes Katrina and Rita inflicted on homes, boats, gear and certain fisheries has deepened Horst’s concern for both his former constituents and the endangered culture of coastal Louisiana. The storms came on the heels of long-standing industry problems – domestic and foreign competition, high fuel prices and government regulations, which already had driven many seafood harvesters into other professions. The state’s seafood processors have also felt the squeeze. “They do what they can,” Horst said. “There is a surprising stoicism among these people, but they don’t have much choice. What else are they to do?” Outspokenness on issues affecting both fisheries and fishermen was a Horst trademark in all three of his major missions as an agent – research, education and outreach.
