Iron Mountains Endangered Desert Legacy
Iron Mountains Endangered Desert Legacy Location: The Iron Mountains area is located in the Mojave Desert, in both San Bernardino and Riverside Counties, south of the town of Cadiz. The area is located north of Highway 62, northeast of Joshua Tree National Park, south of the Cadiz Dunes Wilderness and southwest of the Old Woman Mountains Wilderness. The area abuts the eastern side of the Cadiz Valley. Management Agency: Bureau of Land Management, Needles Field Office Description: The terrain includes rugged mountains, playas, sand dunes, bajadas, washes and dozens of other geologic features. The area also contains a portion of Danby Lake (dry). Elevations range from about 600 feet to about 3,200 feet. Wildlife and Plants: The Iron Mountains area is habitat for the endangered desert tortoise, the protected desert bighorn sheep (photo above), and several species on the state watch-list, including the Mojave fringe-toed lizard, hepatic tanager, and prairie falcon. Emory's crucifixion-thorn and Harwood's eriastrum can also be found here. In 1999, a Gila monster was also seen in the area. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife recognizes this area as a wildlife migration corridor, which is an area connecting wildlife populations that have been separated due to human activities. Corridors help avoid inbreeding and may help to re-establish populations that have been reduced or eliminated due to random events such as fire or disease. Desert bighorn sheep have also been found to migrate between the Iron Mountains and the Old Woman Mountains, which can be an important factor in trying to ensure that the species does not die out. -

Graham OLIVER and Rudo VON COSEL Abstract. — Five species of Noetiidae are described from tropical West Africa, defined here as between 23° N and 17°S. The Noetiidae are represented by five genera, and four new taxa are introduced : Stenocista n. gen., erected for Area gambiensis Reeve; Sheldonella minutalis n. sp., Striarca lactea scoliosa n. subsp. and Striarca lactea epetrima n. subsp. Striarca lactea shows considerable variation within species. Ecological factors and geographical clines are invoked to explain some of this variation but local genetic isolation could not be excluded. The relationships of the shallow water West African noetiid species are analysed and compared to the faunas of the Mediterranean, Caribbean, Panamic and Indo- Pacific regions. Stenocista is the only genus endemic to West Africa. A general discussion on the relationships of all the shallow water West African Arcoidea is presented. The level of generic endemism is low and there is clear evidence of circumtropical patterns of similarity between species. The greatest affinity is with the Indo-Pacific but this pattern is not consistent between subfamilies. Notably the Anadarinae have greatest similarity to the Panamic faunal province. Accepted 11-V-2001) Abstract: The mollusks in Manuel Antonio National Park on the central section of the Pacific coast of Costa Rica were studied along thirty-six transects done perpendicular to the shore, and by random sampling of subtidal environments, beaches and mangrove forest. Seventy-four species of mollusks belonging to three classes and 40 families were found: 63 gastropods, 9 bivalves and 2 chitons, during this study in 1995. Of these, 16 species were found only as empty shells (11) or inhabited by hermit crabs (5). Forty-eight species were found at only one locality. Half the species were found at one site, Puerto Escondido. The most diverse habitat was the low rocky intertidal zone. Nodilittorina modesta was present in 34 transects and Nerita scabricosta in 30. Nodilittorina aspera had the highest density of mollusks in the transects. Only four transects did not clustered into the four main groups. The species composition of one cluster of transects is associated with a boulder substrate, while another cluster of transects associates with site. -

Based on literature records and original samples, we review here the knowledge of the Lebanese marine bivalve biota, tracing its changes during the last 170 yr. The updated checklist of bivalves of Lebanon yielded a total of 114 species (96 native and 18 alien taxa), accounting for ca. 26.5% of the known Mediterranean Bivalvia and thus representing a particularly poor fauna. Analysis of the 21 taxa historically described on Lebanese material only yielded 2 available names. Records of 24 species are new for the Lebanese fauna, and Lioberus ligneus is also a new record for the Mediterranean Sea. Comparisons between molluscan records by past (before 1950) and modern (after 1950) authors revealed temporal variations and qualitative modifications of the Lebanese bivalve fauna, mostly affected by the introduction of Erythraean species. The rate of recording of new alien species (evaluated in decades) revealed later first local arrivals (after 1900) than those observed for other eastern Mediterranean shores, while the peak in records in conjunc- tion with our samplings (1991 to 2010) emphasizes the need for increased field work to monitor their arrival and establishment. -

Early ontogeny of Jurassic bakevelliids and their bearing on bivalve evolution NIKOLAUS MALCHUS Malchus, N. 2004. Early ontogeny of Jurassic bakevelliids and their bearing on bivalve evolution. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 49 (1): 85–110. Larval and earliest postlarval shells of Jurassic Bakevelliidae are described for the first time and some complementary data are given concerning larval shells of oysters and pinnids. Two new larval shell characters, a posterodorsal outlet and shell septum are described. The outlet is homologous to the posterodorsal notch of oysters and posterodorsal ridge of arcoids. It probably reflects the presence of the soft anatomical character post−anal tuft, which, among Pteriomorphia, was only known from oysters. A shell septum was so far only known from Cassianellidae, Lithiotidae, and the bakevelliid Kobayashites. A review of early ontogenetic shell characters strongly suggests a basal dichotomy within the Pterio− morphia separating taxa with opisthogyrate larval shells, such as most (or all?) Praecardioida, Pinnoida, Pterioida (Bakevelliidae, Cassianellidae, all living Pterioidea), and Ostreoida from all other groups. The Pinnidae appear to be closely related to the Pterioida, and the Bakevelliidae belong to the stem line of the Cassianellidae, Lithiotidae, Pterioidea, and Ostreoidea. The latter two superfamilies comprise a well constrained clade. These interpretations are con− sistent with recent phylogenetic hypotheses based on palaeontological and genetic (18S and 28S mtDNA) data. A more detailed phylogeny is hampered by the fact that many larval shell characters are rather ancient plesiomorphies. Colorado River Hydrologic Region California’s Groundwater Rice Valley Groundwater Basin Bulletin 118 Rice Valley Groundwater Basin • Groundwater Basin Number: 7-4 • County: Riverside, San Bernardino • Surface Area: 189,000 acres (295 square miles) Basin Boundaries and Hydrology This groundwater basin underlies Rice Valley in northeast Riverside and southeast San Bernardino Counties. Elevation of the valley floor ranges from about 675 feet above sea level near the center of the valley to about 1,000 feet along the outer margins. The basin is bounded by nonwater- bearing rocks of the Turtle Mountains on the north, the Little Maria and Big Maria Mountains on the south, the Arica Mountains on the west, and by the West Riverside and Riverside Mountains on the east. Low-lying alluvial drainage divides form a portion of the basin boundaries on the northwest and northeast, and the Colorado River bounds a portion of the basin on the east. Maximum elevations of the surrounding mountains range to about 2,000 feet in the Arica Mountains, about 3,000 feet in the Big Maria Mountains, and 5,866 feet at Horn Peak in the Turtle Mountains (Bishop 1963; Jennings 1967; USGS 1971a, 1971b, 1983a, 1983b, 1983c). Annual average precipitation ranges from about 3 to 5 inches. Surface runoff from the mountains drains towards the center of the valley, except in the eastern part of the valley, where Big Wash drains to the Colorado River (USGS 1971a, 1971b, 1983a, 1983b, 1983c). Hydrogeologic Information Water Bearing Formations Alluvium is the water-bearing material that forms the basin and includes unconsolidated Holocene age deposits and underlying unconsolidated to semi-consolidated Pleistocene deposits (DWR 1954, 1963). -

These events challenge our small staff, but we consistently rise to the occasion in order to serve the listening community and especially those who support our operation. KVC_aRts – This month, KVC_aRts featured two interviews from the SBVC family for inclusion in our weekly arts and entertainment program on radio, KVC_aRts. The first was with Professor Margaret Worsley from the Performing Arts Department at San Bernardino Valley College. KVCR’s Lillian Vasquez interviewed Maggie Worsley who runs the Instrumental Music Program at SBVC. The Worsley segment aired June 7th episode and June 11 repeat of KVC_aRts. More recently, Chris Clarke, the retiring SBVC Planetarium Specialist, was interviewed by 91.9 KVCR Program Manager, Rick Dulock. This segment aired June 14 and 19. WELCOME BACK – KVCR Producer, David Fleming returned to work for half days on June 12. He had been out with a severe case of pneumonia and spent 17 days in the hospital. David will be working afternoons and mentoring our Professional Expert, Isel Cuapio as she covers the live – on air hosting operations of All Things Considered during Rick Dulock’s vacation.
