Over the last I-lost-count-by-now days of quarantine, people everywhere have come up with incredibly innovative ways to stay in touch six feet apart. This is not surprising as Dr. Jocelyn Carter, an associate professor in the Department at DePaul University points out that oxytocin “is basically triggered by physical touch, it can be healing in terms of emotional regulation and emotional development; it’s what helps promote bonds”, so of course, people will try anything to come as close as possible to the border of touching. Let’s talk about some ways to stay close, but not that close. Newport student Aaron Lee (12) shares, “I’ve been staying in touch with my friends by Facetiming them often and doing covid-safe hangouts— making sure to always stay cautious.” According to Harvard Health Publishing, “tech companies reported that the use of video calls for socializing surged by as much as 80%, enabling people to “see” family and friends.” Facetime is a great, healthy option to talk to friends and stay connected. Lee adds, “Facetime or Zoom calls are always fun and a good Image Courtesy of Google Images. way to connect with people that you’re unable to see in person.” It’s a great way to “see” relatives without taking the risk of traveling. Another fun idea to try with a significant other or friend is food delivery swaps! While this may seem a bit silly, order food and send it to each other. Eat it together on Facetime and tell the other if they got your palate just right or they’re completely “rotten” at the game. Quarantine pounds. Though the term sounds like a comedic twist on the quarantine and extra weight, it addresses something quite serious. Throughout history, people have been out in the fields, on the streets, or in the factories with manual labor. This has assisted in controlling their body weights. However, recently, most workers sit at their desks, working without much physical labor. Due to this shift in lifestyle, the average body weight of people has significantly increased.
