Introduction

Welcome to Tangmere Ward, we hope to make your stay as pleasant and comfortable as possible.

This leaflet is designed to give you and your relatives/visitors the information you need about Tangmere Ward, the Hospital, and the services we provide.

If English is not your first language we can arrange for interpreting services if necessary. This can be organised through the ward.

Tangmere Ward has 5 bedded ward bays with en-suite facilities in each bay. Most of our beds have special cots that allow you to keep your baby close to you while you are sleeping and to allow you access to your baby without getting out of bed. Each bed has a pull around curtain to ensure your privacy when necessary.

There is an infant feeding room where you can breast feed or express breast milk. We also have a small nursery where you can bath your baby.

It is very important that you bring all your prescription medicines in with you to hospital. Please hand the medicines to a member of staff on duty on your arrival.

There are four en-suite private rooms and two non en-suite private rooms on Tangmere Ward. These rooms are available for a small fee however, we regret that private rooms cannot be booked in advance and must be requested on admission. If your Midwife or Obstetrician advises that a private room is desirable for clinical reasons, you will be treated as a priority without any charge to you. Payment for these rooms will be taken during your stay via a debit or credit card.

NB: Executive and Premier rooms are allocated according to clinical need in the first instance. Availability of an Executive/ Premier room is not guaranteed and can only be confirmed when you are admitted to the ward. If it becomes necessary, we may ask you to vacate your room before discharge.

Recognising Staff Cont.

Please note ALL Staff will be wearing their Hospital Identification badge. If you notice that this is not the case, please alert your Midwife or Healthcare Assistant.

The Midwifery team is led by Ward Manager Karen Bennett who is supported by fully trained Midwives and Maternity Healthcare Assistants who will provide around the clock care and support, allowing you to make informed choices about your care and treatment.

The care of mothers and babies within specified bay and side rooms are allocated to Midwives at the beginning of each shift and their names of will be displayed within your bay/room and the number of staff on the ward that day will be displayed in the main corridor.

Other members of the team

During your stay you will come across other members of the team all of whom have a role to play in your care and treatment.

 Head of Midwifery/Senior Midwifery Managers (Matron) Our Head of Midwifery or one of the Senior Midwifery Managers will visit the ward on a regular basis and will be happy to answer any questions you might have.

 Medical Team Obstetricians and Paediatricians visit the ward daily to carry out examinations on you or your baby.

 Midwife Counsellor If you would like to talk to the Midwife Counsellor about the birth of your baby you can contact her in confidence by calling 07876 475 772 or by informing your midwife.

 Physiotherapists Women can benefit from Physiotherapy advice and treatment both during pregnancy and in the early post-natal period. In addition, pre and post-operative advice and exercises can aid recovery. The Physiotherapist visits the ward Monday to Friday. If your stay is over a weekend and you would like to speak to the Physio Team, please speak with a member of staff who will provide the team with your contact details.

 Bounty Photographer The Bounty Photographer will give you a pack containing a small amount of toiletries when you are admitted to Tangmere or Labour ward. Before you go home another pack with information leaflets and baby products will be given to you. The photographer visits Tangmere Ward daily enabling you to have a first portrait photo taken of your baby (photos are chargeable). Please let a member of the team know if you do not want a visit from Bounty.

 Trolley Service Twice a week (Monday & Friday afternoons) volunteers from the Friends of Hospital visit the ward with a trolley stocked with confectionary, soft drinks etc.

Award Winning Unit

All-Party Parliamentary Group on Maternity

Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the eight outstanding maternity units which have won awards from the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Maternity (APPGM).

The award recognised the team’s commitment of listening to parents who had used the service. As a result the maternity ward now provides an opportunity for fathers/partners to stay overnight in comfy chairs enabling them to bond as a new family. We were the first unit within Maternity to allow this in .

Care Quality Commission (CQC)

During December 2015 all three sites operated by Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust were inspected by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). The purpose of these inspections is to ensure that health and social care services provide people with safe, effective, compassionate, high quality care & promote and encourage improvement. Following our visit, Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was named as the third acute trust to be awarded a rating of “Outstanding” for the services we provide.

Chief Inspector of Hospitals, Professor Sir Mike Richards said this of our Trust:

“Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation aspires to be one of the best patient-centred services in the , with a trust-wide mantra of patients first. We found that this ambition was understood and embedded in the practice of staff across all professions and at all levels. I congratulate the trust and all staff on this outstanding rating.”

Partners and Visitors on the Ward

Our comfy recliner chairs and sofa beds (only in private rooms) allow families to stay together in the first precious hours after birth and give new mums the extra support that many tend to need.

We kindly request that partners staying overnight on Tangmere ward bring with them everything they will need for an overnight stay. We regret that we cannot provide washing/showering facilities (this is only available in private rooms with en-suites) or food and apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. If your partner wishes to stay, please ask a member of staff for a reclining chair if you do not have one next to the bed.

Partners are welcome to have a tea/coffee when we do the drinks round and there is a machine situated by the Ward entrance, we do ask for a small contribution for this. Alternatively, the Hospital Restaurant offers a variety of food and beverages including Costa Coffee.

N.B: For the comfort and safety of new families, we politely request that only children of the new parents visit Tangmere Ward and that visitors are limited to two people per bed at any one me – thank you.

Infection Control

Infection control is very important to us and we take this very seriously. We encourage everyone who comes into hospital to wash their hands or use the alcohol rub. Your visitors should use the rub before entering the ward and as they leave. We ask that you do not allow your visitors to sit/lie on your bed. Please keep luggage to the essentials (your Community Midwife will provide you with a list) to minimise blocking emergency walkways in and around your cubicle and to allow our domestic teams to maintain the cleanliness of our ward. This will take place on a daily basis.

Unfortunately flowers are not allowed on the ward, this is in line with our infection control policy.

Security on the Ward

Members of staff will not take your baby for any tests without you or your partner in attendance. For the safety of our patients and their families, admission to the ward is by entry phone only. During the night the main entrance to the unit will be locked, an entry phone is located on the wall of the entrance lobby to request access to the building from the ward staff. Please do not let people follow you into the building or the ward areas as you arrive or leave – you are entitled to ask that they wait for the receptionist to admit them. All staff working on or visiting the unit wear picture identification cards at all times.

Meal Times and Menus

Breakfast is served from 8am to 9am

Lunch is served from 12 noon to 1pm (Unfortunately, hot meals will only be available until 12.30pm)

Supper is served from 5.30pm to 6.30pm (Unfortunately, hot meals will only be available until 6.00pm)

The Housekeeper will discuss the menu options with you in the morning, and a waitress service is in operation to bring your tray to your bed.

Drinks are served throughout the day.

If at anytime you feel hungry or miss your meal please let the housekeeper or a member of staff knows; we will be happy to help you.

Available at all times:  Toast  Cheese & biscuits  Fruit  Biscuits  Tea, coffee, Hot Chocolate

If you have any special dietary requirements please let the Housekeeper know and she will be able to order your meal for you.

Facilities & Car Parking

Terrace Restaurant The new Terrace Restaurant is located on the first floor of the main Hospital over the link corridor and serves breakfast, lunch & dinner between:  7.15am — 7.30pm, Monday to Friday and  8.30am — 7.00pm Saturday and Sunday.

The Terrace Restaurant has a salad bar, delicatessen and coffee bar and offers a full range of hot and cold snacks throughout the day.

Costa Coffee Costa Coffee is now open in the main hospital entrance and opens from:  7.00am—8.00pm, Monday to Friday and  8.00am—6.00pm, Saturday and Sunday

Costa provides a range of hot and cold drinks, snacks, sandwiches and paninis.

Amigo The convenience shop Amigo is next to Costa Coffee in the main hospital entrance and opens from:  7.00am—8.00pm, Monday to Friday and  8.00am—6.00pm, Saturday and Sunday

League of Friends The League of Friends shop is now located in Outpatients Reception.

Vending Machines Vending Machines are located in A&E, Main Reception, Outpatients, Chichester Treatment Centre and Antenatal Clinic.

Cash Machine A cash machine is located in the main hospital reception.

Chaplaincy The hospital's Chapel is on the ground floor of the main building and is always open for quiet reflection or to leave a message for the Chaplains or their team of volunteers.

Clergy of various denominations visit the wards regularly and will be happy to meet with you or your relatives if you wish. Please tell a midwife if you would like to receive a visit or receive Holy Communion on the ward.

Your own minister, priest or religious leader is also welcome to visit you in hospital. Please speak to the ward staff if you would like them to arrange this.

Car Parking There are several patient and visitor car parks on the St Richard's Hospital site. Blue badge holders are able to park for free in the designated spaces but normal charges apply in the main car parks.

You will receive a ticket at the barrier on entry and should pay at the pay station before returning to your car. The ticket returned to you at the pay station can then be used to open the exit barrier on leaving. Pay stations accept cash only, give change and have an intercom if you need help.

N.B: Unfortunately pay stations do not yet accept the new £1 coins or £5 notes. You can pay with these and on card at the car park office.

Payment

Charges are as follows

 £1.60 for up to one hour  £2.60 for 1 - 2 hours  £3.50 for 2 - 3 hours  £4.00 for 3 - 4 hours  £6.00 for 4 - 24 hours

Charges apply at all times of day and night and stays of more than 24 hours are charges at the 24 hour fee plus the number of additional hours above that, e.g. 25 hours will cost £7.60 (£6.00 + £1.60) etc.

If you are dropping someone off, you can park for 15 minutes for free.

In the event of a patient being admitted to hospital for a period in excess of 14 days the next of kin or a nominated visitor will be offered reduced parking costs of a maximum rate of one hour charge/visit for any further visits at St Richard’s Hospital. Please ask on the ward for more information.

Important things to know

Smoking/Vaping and Alcohol Smoking and Alcohol are not permitted anywhere on the hospital site including the car park and hospital grounds. Please ask friends and relatives to be respectful of other patients and visitors and leave the hospital premises if they wish to smoke.

Electronic Devices

Mobile Phones and other electronic devices are permitted on the ward but please consider your neighbours and keep noise levels to a minimum by using headphones and ensuring mobile phones are kept on vibrate or silent.

Fire The hospital fire alarms are tested on a Monday morning; you will hear a loud bell sound that will last a few minutes.

In the event of a suspected fire, a loud alarm bell will sound. All staff are familiar with the procedure for dealing with such an event. Please wait for instructions regarding evacuation.

If you suspect anything that might signal a fire, please tell a member of staff.

Lost Property Please try not to bring personal or valuable items into the hospital. If you do, make sure they are clearly labelled with your name. It is best to use an indelible marker pen or name labels.

If any of your property is lost or misplaced while you are in hospital, please contact the Ward or alternatively our Patients Affairs staff who are responsible for lost property within the hospitals and may

Patient Feedback

We value your contribution to our service

All families using our maternity service can provide us with valuable feedback by completing the NHS ‘Friends and Family’ questionnaire. This is a national survey monitoring patient experience. We welcome all feedback with regards to your experience within the Ward. If you would like to discuss your care further or feel you would like to make a complaint please speak with the ward manager in the first instance. We can also provide you with details of the Trust’s complaints procedure and PALS (Patient Advice and Liaison Service) should you feel this is necessary. The PALS service provides confidential support, advice and information to patients, relatives and carers about services provided by the Trust.

Maternity User Forum We have a Maternity user forum which our families are welcome to attend. This forum has been developed to allow our users to play an active part in enhancing our services. The forums take place every three months and are at the local Family Centres. Should you wish to attend please see the notice board within Tangmere Ward, your GP Surgery or your local Family centre; these areas will have the details of the next meeting.

Gifts and Donations Staff are not generally allowed to receive gifts from patients however, small gifts of chocolates, biscuits, fruit or similar may be accepted. Should you wish to make a charitable donation to the hospital, a ward or specific fund, please send this to Love your Hospital Charitable Trust, Spitalfield Lane, Chichester, , PO19 6SE. Be sure to clearly state which ward or department you would like the beneficiary to be.
