Letter from the Camp Director

Welcome to the 2020 camping season! I hope that this guide answers many questions you might have about camping at Camp McKee. Over the last several years the camp has undergone many different changes to the program, so it is important that you take note of the different parts of this guide—whether it is your first time attending or your 60th.

We are very excited to be celebrating Camp McKee’s 60th birthday! A lot has changed over time, but Camp McKee still strives to offer a fantastic program alongside the traditional camping experience. I hope to see you all come out for the birthday party we will have for camp each week! Even if you are unable to attend a full week of camp, we urge you to visit one of the weeks and share your past experiences, while getting the chance to see camp again.

While going through the guide, you should note a few program changes for the 2020 season. The Dan Beard program has transformed into the Pioneer Scout program. This program allows first scouts to choose the amount of rank skills they would like to take, while getting to take merit badge classes of their choosing from the list of classes set aside for them, giving them a classic camp experience. The McKee Adventure Program has updated its events, adding an off-site hike in the Red River Gorge to the other events we’ve been offering. Please see page 19 for all of the fun details of the MAP!

Along with these program changes, we are also beginning to offer newer and more badges throughout the week. Past the rotation, we have restructured the STEM area merit badges to offer more and varied merit badges. The waterfront will now offer lifeguard certification throughout the day/week, an excellent for older scouts and even adult leaders

If you’re just looking through our guide to decide if you want to come to Camp McKee—I invite you to give us a try. If you are a frequent flyer, I want to thank you for choosing to come back. Your support helps the camp and Scouts that attend it. If you have any questions, please feel free to email! Can’t wait to see you!

Yours in service, Thomas “Beauregard” McMurray Camp Director [email protected]

● The Dan Beard program has been replaced by the Pioneer program, an opportunity for new Scouts to leave with more merit badges, create the schedule they would like, and get the same camp experience as a seasoned Scout would, just with some more rank skills!

● The McKee Adventure Program has added a hike into the Red River Gorge to Cloud Splitter.

● There is a campsite deposit deadline this year of March 6. If you do not pay your campsite deposit by then, your site may be given to another unit who has paid their deposit.

● NEW BSA HEALTH & MEDICAL FORMS (2019 printing) - Old forms will not be accepted

● Camp McKee will be celebrating its 60th anniversary this year! To celebrate, we will be hosting a birthday party every Thursday and everyone is invited!

2020 Camp McKee Leader’s Guide 4

The History of Camp McKee

The history of Camp McKee is rich in diversity. Native Americans occupied east central before the early European settlers arrived. Grape Knob would have offered a good observation point from which or a could view the surrounding land. The courthouse in Mt. Sterling was built with stone mined from Grape Knob when it served as a rock quarry. McKee has a special sense of place.

In 1920, Mrs. Gertrude P. McKee began piecing together the land which would become known as Camp McKee. On March 31, 1945, seven tracts of land totaling more than 300 acres were deeded over to the Blue Grass Council of the Boy Scouts of America by P.L. and Gertrude McKee for one dollar. The first official camporee was held in 1946, and for several years after, fall camporees were held. Additional parcels of land were added in the late 1950s, and the camp property now consists of more than 800 attractive acres.

In early April 1959, clearing and lumbering for the camp lake began, proceeding concurrently with work on the waterfront, activity areas, campsites, administration lodge, health lodge, trading post and Keeneland Dining Hall. The first camp ranger, Walt Ferrell, took up residence in his new home at the camp entrance early in 1960, and on June 10 of that year, the first of 1300 boys who were to use the facility during its initial summer camping season arrived.

The Pioneer Mountain Trail was hiked and laid out by Scouts in late 1960 and early 1961. The chapel and picnic area were the next items built. The chapel was dedicated on June 28, 1962 with churches in the Blue Grass Council donating nearly half of the funds for the project. In 1976, five more campsites, showers, and a pedestrian bridge were built. During the same era, the OA Building was designed and constructed.

On March 31, 2001, a groundbreaking took place, celebrating a new season of construction at Camp McKee. The new construction began with a new dining facility named Stamler Hall, built to seat about 350 people and sport a “state of the art” kitchen. Also constructed were Karrick Retreat Lodge, a new climbing tower, a C.O.P.E. Course, and a Handicraft Lodge.

Named after the late P. L. McKee and Gertrude McKee (the original land donors), Camp McKee has been serving the Scouting community for over 70 years. Located just 8 miles from Interstate 64, near its junction with Interstate 75, McKee is easily accessible to the entire Eastern United States. McKee’s location puts us within minutes of the Red River Gorge, the Daniel Boone National Forest, and Cave Run Lake.

Camp McKee is proud to be a Nationally Accredited Camp by the Boy Scouts of America. Don’t miss out on the exciting opportunity to learn new skills or hone existing talents at Camp McKee this summer!

Visitors will be given identification upon check in and m ust wear this identification while on camp property. Visitor meal tickets can be purchased at the Trading Post.

Health & Safety

Annual Health and Medical Record - Parts A, B, and C required ( form updated in 2019) Medical examinations for camp attendance are r equired for ALL campers, both youth and adults. The current medical form can be found online at h ttps://www.scouting.org/health-and-safety/ahmr/ . Medical forms should be updated annually and not expire during your stay at summer camp. M ake sure you are using the form that has “2019 Printing” in the lower right hand corner - o ld forms will not be accepted per BSA policy - no exceptions.

Part C is the physical exam that is r equired for participants in any event that exceeds 72 consecutive hours (summer camp). Part C is to be completed and signed by a certified and licensed health-care provider: physician (M.D. or D.O.), nurse practitioner, or physician assistant.

The current official BSA form must b e used. Any other health form from any other agency is not acceptable. The form m ust be signed by the parent or guardian. The immunization record or an immunization exemption must be included. Any Scout or Scouter who does not have these forms properly filled out and signed will N OT be allowed to stay on Camp McKee property during summer camp.

The Health Officers r ecommend that in order to speed up the check-in process, the health forms be three hole punched and placed in a 3-ring binder with the leaders first followed by the Scouts alphabetically. This is also a good way for you to keep up with who has and has not given you their forms.

CPAP Machine Policy Our campsites do not have power, and only a few of them (campsites 13, 12, and 4) can reach power if enough extension cords are brought to camp, which is not guaranteed to work. W e recommend bringing a power source to camp to power your machine, or visiting www.cpap.com to purchase a battery powered CPAP machine. If this is unavailable, you may fill out a request form to stay in campsite 3, which has power. This application does not guarantee space in the campsite for your entire troop unless other exceptions are needed. Please plan accordingly. We have restricted the use of campsite 3 to those Scouts or leaders who have a physical need for that campsite. A leader’s need for electricity is not considered a necessity for your entire troop to occupy campsite 3. If granted, you may be asked to supervise other Scouts staying in that campsite and your troop must still follow two-deep leadership back in their campsite.

Tick Awareness Plan Ticks transmit various disease-causing agents from animals to humans. Ticks are found at McKee Scout Reservation. Most people do not feel a tick biting and so campers should check regularly for the presence of ticks on their person.

All participants on the day of arrival will be cautioned and directed as to the risk of tick borne disease, and the precautions and procedures to be followed. Signs will be posted throughout Camp McKee with information about ticks.

All embedded ticks are to be removed by Health Lodge personnel and preserved in properly labeled specimen containers (any such incidents will be properly logged according to pre-existing procedures).

All exposed persons will receive written information pertaining to the exposure and appropriate follow-up care. (For youth, the information will be provided to the responsible adult).

Pre-Registration & Required Paperwork

Online Registration The Blue Grass Council uses the Doubleknot host system for summer camp registration. When you fill out a reservation form (pg. 28) and send it to the council, your unit will be entered into the online system. If you have attended summer camp at McKee in the last 5 years, your unit should already be in our system. Once we have entered your reservation, your designated leader will receive logon information to access the system. The Doubleknot system lets you register your Scouts and leaders as attending, assign Scouts to merit badge classes and make payments online. If you register online everything is done in real time so you know if a merit badge class is full when you register and can immediately choose an alternate.

You do not have to use the online system, but be aware that mailed in information is entered as time is available. It may be a day or two after it is received, before it can be entered. If you have questions or need assistance with the online registration, please contact Susan (s [email protected] ) at the council office.

Required Information The following information needs to be submitted to the council office as soon as possible. 5. Completed Health Forms for ALL Scouts AND Scouters—including adults who will be arriving after check-in or at a later date. Make sure you are using the updated 2019 form. 6. Unit swim classification record - must include classification for EVERYONE o n your roster 7. Merit badge class choices if not previously submitted 8. Consent for special activity forms for Scouts (original signed copies) 9. Check-in Appointments Units can check in by appointment to speed up the registration process. You should request an appointment time when you submit the final payment form (due May 8) to the council office, or contact Susan Stone [email protected] at the council office (859-231-7811). Check in begins at 1:00 pm Sunday and times are open every 15 minutes. Times are scheduled on a first come, first served basis. 2020 Camp McKee Leader’s Guide 12

Arrival and Check-in Procedures Please plan on arriving B EFORE your scheduled check in time on SUNDAY.

1. When you arrive at camp, you will be directed to park in the lot below the administration building where you will be met by a troop guide who will lead your troop/crew through the check-in/orientation process. You should bring your registration materials, medical forms (if not turned in previously), troop/crew roster, s ecurity deposit check and the balance of any fees due, with you at this time. 2. One vehicle per unit will be allowed to drive to the campsite for unloading the troop’s gear. Do not drive into the campsite; unload gear at the road. Troop/crew trailers may remain at the campsite, but vehicles must be unhitched and moved to the parking lot. 3. As soon as the troop/crew gear is unloaded and stored, Scouts and adults should change into swim trunks and prepare for medical & swim checks. The troop guide will take you to the proper areas. 4. Your troop/crew will then be able to return to the campsite to set up camp until your troop guide returns to take your troop/crew to dinner. 5. Field uniforms (“Class A”) should be worn for all flag retreat ceremonies and dinner. 6. After dinner, one adult leader (Scoutmaster or Crew Advisor) from each troop/crew is required to attend the opening leaders' meeting. It is recommended that one youth leader (Senior Patrol Leader or Crew President) attend the leaders’ meeting as well. 7. All Scouts that have not been to Camp McKee are required to take part in a camp orientation tour, which will meet after dinner as well.

Saturday Early Arrival We recognize that, due to the distance involved, some troops/crews will need to arrive at camp on Saturday. If you wish to do this, the following rules apply:

1. There will be an additional fee ($2.00 per person), for all members of your troop/crew who arrive early. This fee must be submitted to the council office, with the final payment, by May 8th. The council office will notify the Camp Director that you will be arriving early. 2. Your campsite assignment will be posted in the Administration Building. Please stop and verify your campsite and if you will be sharing that site with another troop. All campsites are numbered and will be marked, so please be sure to set up in the correct site. If your troop/crew sets up in the wrong campsite, you will be required to move to your correct site on Sunday afternoon, n o exceptions. 3. The management of Camp McKee reserves the right to put more than one troop/crew per site, if the need arises. Remember a Scout is kind. If, upon arrival, you see that there is another troop/crew sharing your assigned site, please be courteous and do not set up over the entire site. Campsite occupancy is based on two person tents - this is how you should set up. If upon the arrival of other troops/crews on Sunday there is insufficient space, you will be required to move some of your troop/crew gear to make space for the others. 4. There will not be any staff members or camp leadership personnel on hand to assist you on Saturday evening or Sunday morning. Scouts should not enter any program areas - swimming and boating are not allowed. Scouts should not be ‘roaming around’ unsupervised d uring your early time here, especially after dark. 5. Please plan on arriving A FTER noon on Saturday as staff may not be finished preparing camp for next week. 6. You will still be expected to check-in at your scheduled time on Sunday.

2020 Camp McKee Leader’s Guide 13

Your security deposit can be kept if the camp staff finds sufficient evidence that rules have been broken or damage done. If damages exceed the security deposit, your unit will be billed for the remainder of the cost of damages.

At this time, you will also receive a check-out packet containing patches, completion records and medical forms. Important Note: It is the responsibility of the unit to verify that all medical forms are in the packet. The council does not maintain medical records for any camp or event once the event is over. All medical documents left behind will be destroyed.

Pioneer Scout- First Year Camper Program

The Pioneer Scout- First Year Camper Program is designed for new Scouts or those coming to summer camp for the first time. Participants in the program may sign up for sessions in the Pioneer Area, which consist of rank skills (Tenderfoot, 2nd Class, or 1st Class) and the First Aid merit badge. A Pioneer Scout may sign up for a session of each rank, or they may sign up for what they need or only like to complete here at camp. Outside of the area, they may take merit badges in other areas that are highlighted in the “Pioneer Green.” All of these merit badges may be completed at camp with no prerequisites before camp. Customize your schedule to what you want to take away from your first year at camp! As for evening program, check out the Evening Program for when Pioneer Scouts can visit all the areas and participate in events designed for them and them only.

Pioneer Scouts must sign up for at least one session of rank skills, but are encouraged to take two sessions so they can maximize their take away from camp. All other sessions may be filled up with merit badges highlighted in the merit badge schedule. These merit badge sessions are for Pioneer Scouts only and Pioneer Scouts may not sign up for merit badges outside of those listed unless approved by the camp director. Scouts outside of the Pioneer Scout program may request to join a rank skills session, but only if seating is available and must be approved by the camp director.

NOTE: Merit badges such as Space Exploration and Leatherworking require money to buy kits in the trading post to complete the requirements. Usual cost for these supplies is between $10 and $15. Other merit badges are offered in those times that are free to the scouts.

For the Swimming merit badge, if a scout has issues passing a swimmer’s test, we encourage them to either sign up for instructional swim or another merit badge, so they don’t leave camp with a large partial in Swimming MB

Provisional Scout Program

This is not actually a specific program, but an opportunity for Scouts to attend summer camp without their troop or crew, or who choose to attend an additional week without their unit.

Scouts will be assigned to a temporary troop while at camp. Depending upon the number of provisional Scouts we have register, this temporary troop will either be an already existing troop that is attending during the Scouts requested week, or one lead by two or more adult camp staff members. Scouts will be expected to follow all rules set by their “adopted troop” while at camp (i.e. eating with the troop, campsite inspections, etc.) Scouts may request a specific troop if they know of another troop that will be going during the Scout’s requested week. This request will need to be approved by the “temporary” Scoutmaster before the Scout will be assigned to that troop.

Regular deadline dates and summer camp fees apply. A $50 deposit is due with the application and the remaining balance will be due on May 8, 2019, with a copy of your current medical form. Please send all applications and payments to the council office.

High Adventure Programs

McKee Adventure Program (MAP) for Scouts AND Venturers (offered the 1st– 3rd weeks) McKee Adventure Program features experiences that take participants all over the Red River Gorge to experience some of the most popular programs there, along with their time spent at camp. Scouts/Venturers do NOT have to attend this program the same week their troop/crew attends. They can fill out the provisional camper form and attend by themselves, with a friend, etc. There is an additional $80 fee associated with this program to cover transportation and off-site activities.

Adult leaders are welcome to participate in this program also. Note: Leaders will still need to have two deep leadership on camp property at all times. If you are an adult and are interested in participating in this program, please register yourself for the program just like you register your Scouts for merit badge classes.

Participants will be official members of the McKee camp staff and will be available to host Scoutmaster coffee breaks, share leadership skills (as well as a few stories), etc.

At the Monday morning leaders’ meeting, an adult leader from each troop should sign up all Scouters who will be at the luncheon.

Order of the Arrow Activities at Summer Camp

The Order of the Arrow is Scouting’s National Honor Society, and Kawida Lodge #480 is the Order of the Arrow Lodge in the Blue Grass Council. All year long, OA members work on service projects at Camp McKee, and the lodge holds most of its activities here.

Every week at summer camp there are special activities hosted by the lodge, most of which are restricted to OA members. Check your summer camp schedule for the following events:

OA Brotherhood Conversion (weekly) All Ordeal members of the Ordeal of the Arrow are invited to become Brotherhood members during summer camp. The Brotherhood preparation sessions will begin on Tuesday and Wednesday after lunch on the side porch of the dining hall. The Brotherhood Ceremony will have the members meet at the dining hall porch at 9:30 PM, while the attendees may go to the ceremony grounds at the same time. Additional fee of $20 for a new sash applies. Payments are to be paid at the Trading Post.

OA Callout Ceremony (weekly) The weekly callout ceremony will be Friday at the closing campfire. Out of council units, please see note below.

A Message to all Lodge Members The Order of the Arrow is a service organization, and we are always looking for a way to serve our camps. While at camp, the lodge challenges you to help out in any way you can whether it be to work on a camp improvement project, help a new Scout learn a skill, or to just come out to one of the ceremonies and watch. Any way that you can serve is a way to show your support to the Order of the Arrow.

Out of Council Units If your troop is not part of the Blue Grass Council, then no one in your troop can do his Ordeal or Brotherhood at McKee Scout Reservation. You must do your Ordeal or Brotherhood with the lodge and council with which you were elected. However, if you have any Scouts that were elected to the Order of the Arrow, they may be called out at the Friday night ceremony. Proper documentation from your home lodge must be presented to the OA Camp Coordinator. Kawida Lodge extends this courtesy for recognition purposes only.

Merit Badges and Advancement Opportunities

Advancement is one of the primary reasons youth remain in Scouting. Many merit badges cannot be completed during program time alone; some require extra "homework". Scoutmasters are encouraged to consider the amount of work required and only sign Scouts up for no more than four merit badge sessions.

Rotating Merit Badges In order to offer a wider variety of merit badges, the following badges will be offered on a three year rotation. 2020/2023 2021/2024 2022/2025 ECOLOGY Weather Geology Plant Science Forestry Soil and Water Conservation Oceanography OUTDOOR SKILLS Geocaching Backpacking Geocaching Pioneering Pioneering Search & Rescue EAGLE’S NEST Law Journalism/Photography Scouting Heritage Entrepreneurship American Cultures Archaeology STEM AREA Astronomy Railroading Aviation Programming Moviemaking Radio

Pioneer Scouts Area (1st year campers) Scouts in the Pioneer Area can sign up for classes in the area and for classes that are highlighted in green, as shown below. It is encouraged that Pioneer Scouts still sign up for as many rank skills sessions as needed, but may take any combination of merit badges and rank skills sessions. These classes are “first come, first served,” so sign up for them as soon as possible! Classes may be capped, and may turn away Scouts as needed to ensure that the class is being taught as safely as possible and that all the Scouts will complete the merit badge. All merit badges offered for the Pioneer Scouts can be finished at camp.

Merit Badge

Merit Badge Requirement Details* Some of the merit badges offered at camp have requirements that cannot be completed at camp. These requirements will need to be done either before or after camp for the merit badge to be completed. With new merit badges being added to the schedule, we will be posting an updated pre-req sheet, seperate from the leader’s guide, on the s ummer camp page of the bgbsa.org website in February!

2020 Campership Application DUE TO THE BLUE GRASS COUNCIL SERVICE CENTER BY APRIL 10, 2020 - Use one form per family

Every Scout and Venturer deserves the opportunity to attend Camp McKee this summer. The Blue Grass Council would like to remove as many obstacles facing Scouts and Venturers that might attend camp as possible, including the camp fee. We realize that there are a few Scouts and Venturers in our council who truly cannot afford the fee. In many cases, these are the same youth for whom camp attendance would be the most beneficial. Therefore, the council has established the campership fund to help those Scouts and Venturers who desire the camp experience but cannot afford it. Scoutmasters and Crew Advisors, it is your responsibility to determine if any Scouts in your troop or crew will have difficulty paying the camp fee. Through the applicant’s parents, determine what portion of the fee the Scout or Venturer is able to pay. Decide if the troop or crew needs to have money-earning projects to help any members of the troop or crew. Then complete a campership application for any Scout or Venturer needing assistance.

Campership applications must be completed and delivered to the council service center before April 10, 2020. The committee will meet and determine the amount to be awarded per Scout. There is a limited amount of funding for camperships that will be divided according to the number of requests that are received on time. Forms received after the deadline date are subject to funding availability. Scoutmasters and Crew Advisors will be notified of the campership awards soon after committee approval. Please use your best judgement in applying for these camperships.

Camperships will be awarded based on Scout/Venturer and troop/crew participation in the Friends of Scouting and popcorn sales programs. Please complete the entire form. All information will be kept confidential.

SPECIAL DIETARY NEEDS FORM RETURN THIS FORM TO THE COUNCIL OFFICE NO LATER THAN 1 2 DAYS BEFORE YOUR ARRIVAL AT CAMP

Unit # ______ Week # ______ Campsite #______

Allergies and special diets are a common concern of our campers. Our food service is very experienced with accommodating most diets including food allergies, religious restrictions, and other health-related diets. We are happy to work to accommodate any diet; however, we require this form be submitted at least two weeks prior to arrival at camp.

NOTE: Special diet requests are for food allergies, religious restrictions, and other health-related needs only. R equests should not be made for food preferences, personal taste, or for "picky eaters": the camp cannot accommodate these requests and they will not be honored. Vegetarian alternatives are available at each meal and, unless a true medical need, should not be requested here.

Example of special diet requests: gluten-free diet, kosher meals, peanut allergy, lactose intolerance, etc. Example of diets that are n ot a special request: vegetarian diets, child does not like vegetables, child will only eat hot dogs or hamburgers, etc.
