Utilization of web-based maps for the purposes of O&M instruction and/or use by travelers with low vision

2 Today's Agenda

 Discuss use of Web-based Maps for purposes of orientation and mobility  Benefits of Web-based Maps  Review O&M Instructional Components  Discuss two Web-based Mapping Technologies  Review Available Features  Discuss Limitations of Web-based Maps  Demonstrations  Intersection/Environmental Evaluations - A Group Lesson  A Sample Lesson  My Experience – AER Regional Conference - Cleveland, Ohio  Our Experience  Your Experience 3 Rationale

 Increases in the number of individuals requiring O&M services  Projected decrease of professional availability  Geographic diversity  Generalization of O&M skills across environments  Instant access to route scouting and travel planning  Decreases geographic barriers  You can be any where in the world preparing for anywhere in the world  Access to internet readily available  General knowledge of internet use  Increase of independent computer use

4 Benefits to the traveler

 Fosters independence  Encourages confidence  Enhances Safety  Develops problem-solving strategies  Increases efficiency  Interest driven  Promotes fun

5 Instructional Components  Route Planning  Route Scouting  Terminology  Landmark, clue, parallel, etc.  Direction Taking / Alignment  Environments (residential, semi-business, business, rural, etc.)  Intersection types (3-way, 4-way, one way, etc.)  Atypical Intersections (offset, channelized turn lane, island, roundabout, etc.)  Regulation Identification (stop sign, stop light, yield, etc.)  Traffic Patterns – Light Cycles  Number Systems – Address Systems  Road Signage (yield, pedestrian crossing , merging traffic, etc.)  Directional perspectives – Directional corners  Public Transportation (routes, stop locations , etc.)  Wayfinding or Re-routing (problem solving, construction navigation, etc.)  Map Making

 Feature changes within web-based map systems  Over-confidence gained in environmental preview  Image capture date  Image resolution – environmental factors  Unmapped areas or Restricted Areas  Rural, college campus, new developments, government  Presence or Absence of traffic  Variability in image across views (N vs. S vs. E vs. W)  Real versus virtual representations  Interface with screen-magnification software 10 Bing Control Features

27 A Sample Lesson

Objective: plan a multi-stop route in Downtown St. Louis utilizing public transportation (taxi, bus, MetroLink).

You need to embark on a 3-5 stop route. You must use at least one bus and one MetroLink during the outing. You will schedule the cab ride with Express Medical Transport (EMT) to leave from your house. An account with Francis Howell and your name has been established. I will provide you the necessary cash for all other travel/transfers prior to the outing.

You need to plan the outing and provide me a copy prior to us leaving. I will assume that you will have considered 2-3 sequences and choose the most EFFICIENT, safest routes you can.

Scenario

You are traveling back to St. Louis to collaborate with your colleagues at JACOBS ENGINEERING GROUP Inc. in St. Louis over a period of 3 days – but this first night is packed with visits and a social event. You have the option to stay at the Millennium Hotel or at the Marriott St. Louis Union Station. You also will have to stop by a law firm you do business with, Stolar Law, to pick up some acquisition papers and other business related documents.

You will fly into Lambert airport’s main terminal on Delta and travel directly to the law office. Because your company, JACOBS, is an international powerhouse, the office is always open and the interns will be available at any time of the night - so the rest of the evening is up to you – they want you to develop an itinerary. You can go to any restaurant you wish, provided it is not in the hotel for which you choose to stay. Also note, you may need to make a stop at your bank, US Bank.
